what is your definition of being real? the bart board is always full of threats and nonsense.the threads that stretch the longest are always an argument of some sort that turns into fake nigga this, fake nigga that, i'm in the streets, blah, blah, blah.the rappers always claim they are realer than the next.i'm really curious as to what you guys define as real.lets get a little positive feedback if possible.

Let's ask Rick Ross what's real. Or maybe Alfamega. I'm sure Yung Berg would break it down nicely. Seems to me that most rappers talk about being something that they clearly are not. Real is being true to yourself and not putting on airs. Real = what the rap game is missing.

you feel me!i'm just saying, it seems throwing your life away is keeping it real from this board. although i know that isnt the case, i'm interested in shedding some light on this misconception.

i see where this thread was inspired from and I think its a great question...I have to co-sign townbizz and say being real is being true to yourself period, knowing who you are and accepting it and rolling with that...unfortunately it is socially acceptable now to say that if you dont sell dope, pimp bitches, be "in the streets" packing pistols or not just that shit but anything that is damn near positive or dont have a negative stigma attached to it you are not "real"....and that is straight bullshit.....its also a defense mechanism to say someone else isnt real if you cant understand them or what they are trying to say or accomplish...people cant get over themselves and their little life enough to keep it real with themselves

basically whatever someone knows and is about is going to be real for them but because someone else isnt like you makes them not real? that shit is ridiculous

i have been guilty of this. good post.

if people took the time to listen to what the real folks have to say about the streets and their mistakes, these twisted misconceptions would be less common. but instead, we have kids all across the country trying to emulate their favorite rappers songs.

look at the man kontac. there was a time i was against what he represented. but in reality, he has the right idea. it's about progress and anyone who has really seen and been through some things in life wouldnt want the same for their children.atleast i would hope so. i'm sure some people arent gonna respond positively and that's fine. but in reality, minding your own, raising your kids, and giving them an opportunity is keeping it real.your reality may not be the next man's, but that doesnt make anyone any better or realer than the next.

To me being real is not if somebody raps about killing, that he actually kills people. It is about rapping about something you have a history with, a connection. Gangsta Rap to me was always kind of a newsreport. And I want to get news from well informed people, and not some made up shit. Who likes to listen to somebody on TV talking about football that never even played the game?

i dont even listen to rap anymore because i dont live like that any longer.but that's just me. i've always wondered why people would listen to rap music although no relation is there. the conclusion i've come to is pretty obvious: entertainment. this doesnt mean i wont protect myself and wont hurt somebody if threatened, i'm just not looking for it any longer. when i deal with the kids on my son's sports teams, i treat them all as my son. if i wouldnt tell my kids to go fuck their life off, why would i tell your kids to?trying to have the "realest nigga" title only clouds the youth minds. it is the parents jobs to guide them,no doubt, but sometimes economically it isnt possible to spend the quality time with your kids you need to. so they turn to the streets and the music and what message are they really getting?keeping it real is going dumb, selling dope, and killing people.artists need to keep in mind they are lightweight looked up to, and while they are bickering in songs about being the realist, 15 and 16 year old kids are doing the same thing. it is what they see.

alot of rap music.....(rap is the bastard son of hip hop) is like action movies....u see the title...get pumped....go pay to watch (or nowdays find the torrent) ..then the movies over...u read the credits..see who produced the film...and move on to the next one...either it was a classic..or it was trash...i think albums should follow movie guidelines now...attached to the parental advisory sticker..they should have shit like "based on a true story" or "inspired by true events" saves alot of time in the store if you ask me

to me personally being real is being honest... not making fake shit up. like for example: on celly cel's song "it's going down" he talks about smoking weed with friends and betting 5 dollars a game on sega genesis, now i classify that as real music since ive been in that situation a ton of times. when a rapper starts talking about being invincible, having all the women and money in the world, killing anyone he feels like killing, i classify that as fake...thats not living in reality, and anyone who can relate to those type of lyrics is not living in reality either. anyone really living like that needs a reality check, because NOBODY is invincible. its definatly possible to be fake and entertaining at the same time though, is al apacino really like tony montanna in real life? no. but scarface is still a great movie. for some people scarface may seem very real to them because they are living a similar life, but the moment they think that they ARE tony montanna, (and by that i mean they think tony and themselves are the same person) that is when they are no longer in touch with whats real and whats fake. if someone rapped about selling coke... ok, thats pretty real (if theyre really selling it or have sold it in the past), but the moment they glorify it like its some shit to be proud of... thats kinda fake...

but no definition of it is set in stone, so im just giving my 2 cents

Being real is about being real with who you truly are. And that doesn't even mean being real to the outside world. Who cares about what anyone but yourself and your immediate family thinks. No one else in this world matters. It is about GOD, you and your family.

For me being real is telling the truth. My new cd lays it all down. I went from being on top of the world. 2 Homes, Car, Bad Finance', Over a Hundred Thousand Dollars sitting, buying my Mom a Brand New SUV to having to sell one of my Houses, Pregnant Finance' leaving me, Baby Momma is now killing me on the Child Support tip, I am a single Father, Bank Account is cleaned out on Court Cases and Child Support. THAT IS WHATS REAL IN MY LIFE. So that is keeping it real.

Hear it all on the upcoming L-Love "Rhythm is the Essence" cd. I feed my family on this business.

For me "real" has not much to do with being who you say you are in your raps...because we all know everyone exaggerates. Being real has to do with your character off camera...how you deal with people around you, how you carry yourself and your values. For example, if you came out of a rough neighborhood and you are a millionaire now because of you music...and you still kick it with the homies from your block, still be in the hood doing the dumb shit you used to do hoping that it will somehow raise your street cred rather than being a mature person and helping those around you...You are fake.
There is nothing wrong with hanging out with old friends, but come on...if you got a crib that costs 4 million dollars, why are u smoking weed in a section 8 apartment in the hood?

Real is staying true to who you are and living your life the way you aspire to live it. If you wanna go to college and never break a law in your life that's being real and doing real things. If you wanna have a 9 to 5 and live a simple life that's also being real. As long as you are being/doing you than its real. Street life isn't the definition of "real." Somewhere in hip hop the perception of whats "real" got completely warped.

no offense, but this shit belongs in the OPEN forum... ( I aint tryin to be the thread police, I'm just saying )

if a thread about positive moves, such as raising money for after school programs , involving San Jo artists gets moved, & this bullshit stays in here... then this board is made for beef threads & is a huge pissing contest.

all respects due to you radiostationrep... this aint a personal attack, but it's gotta be said.
no offense taken.i thought about putting it in the open forum. but these issues always seem to arise here. i can understand your frustration because sometimes actions are biased. this is something i thought could open some minds to rellevant issues in the real world.this board sees more traffic i noticed when words are exchanged, i think we can all agree on that.

good point. people swear they wont change for the money. it is easy to say from the bottom looking up. but change is necessary to keep it, imo.

i also think people are retarded when they cant appreciate rap unless its crime-related, i mean sure i like gangster shit, but whats wrong with focusing on something positive? e-40 once said "take what you need from the game and get the fuck out", to me thats way real, because once you've made it past the point where you are able to survive without being a criminal, your really just trying to impress people or some bullshit.

like "ohh, i need to sell this coke or i'll have to drive a honda civic!!!"

peeps got the game fucked up now a days......

Levitating your game up and thinking positive about the outcomes of life is what will make you real.....

killing someone will NOT make you real..

selling drugs will NOT make you real...

going to jail or prison will NOT make you real..

being true to yourself that's all it matters.....

I went from having so many friends to only having a few now a days, that's because I used to think having so many friends was the real thing to do. But in reality, it's not! Those are the people that will be friendly with you, shake your hand, smile in front of your face and talk shit behind you. That's why I decided to detach many of those ropes from me and decided to let the river take me wherever it's gonna take me...

grow up, get wiser and you'll see the definition of real for yourself...

There we go, CLOSE THIS THREAD. But no foolin, what makes you real is if you handlin your business. Wether you're going to school, hustlin on the corner, in the studio from dusk til dawn, working that 9-5, making your alimony payments, or the simple, getting your FICO/credit score in check, or just the basic paying the bills. YOU'RE KEEPING IT REAL. I'm keeping it real, ain't nothing new coming out from the bay, same bullshit that's been poppin since 2001.
