ASHBOURNE, England -- A 4-year-old boy died after spending more than an hour in a tumble dryer while playing hide and seek.
Investigators in Ashbourne, England, said Sonny Shepherd's mother went shopping shortly after 10 a.m. Monday and left the 4-year-old in the care of older siblings.
However, the boy apparently embarked on a game of hide and seek while the older siblings slept in another room and managed to close himself in the dryer.
The mother called police when she arrived home a half hour later and discovered the boy was missing.
Police said they searched the area with helicopters, which used loudspeakers to inform the public below of the missing child.
However, police said they discovered the Sonny in the dryer after less than an hour of searching. He was declared dead at the scene.
Investigators said it was not clear whether the dryer was in the cycle while the boy was inside or if he died from running out of oxygen.
