Don't Forget that this is the entertainment industry...
The 90s showed that gangsta rap was very profitable. Ask yourself which genre of movie is more profitable: action movies or coming of age films? Action is entertaining. Sex sells. Therefore, anyone looking to make money is going to rap about those things. The west just capitalized on those facts first.

there is G-shit going down everywhere, east/west, EVERYWHERE. That said, it is kind of funny how when the west coast first started this shit, most of the folks from the east were all critical of it saying how it was ruining hip-hop with all that "negativity." Now, many years later, it seems like mostly everybody from the east is doin' gangster shit. they bite our slang and everything. don't get me wrong, i do bump some east coast artists like nas, method man, jadakiss (that fool is G as fuck), but I think everyone out here knows that the west is where the game originated even though alot of outsiders don't want to give credit where is due. Just my 2 cents

I wouldn't say the West started "gangsta" rap. We took it and ran with it definitely and we put it into the mainstream spotlight.

You can't forget people like Kool G Rap and someone who isn't mentioned much, but is a forefather of "gangsta rap", Schooly D from Philly.

but was Kool G doin it b4 fools like King Tee and Ice-T? I mean they were doin' it in like 85. Same w/ Too Short even though he was more about his pimpin than G-shit. maybe its just cuz I'm from the west but I don't recall even of hearing about Kool G until like the early 90's

I don't know about the earliest Kool G Rap shit as far as what year, but the earliest Schooly D shit I can think of was from like '86 so I'd venture to say he was probably doin' it in '84 or '85 at around the same time as the West Coast OG's.
