I dont think there is a correlation between hip hop music sales and rappers out to make money staying or quiting. People don't just want to be rappers to make money, a lot of people idolize the 'lifestyle' a rapper lives, the money, the women, the drugs, the traveling. Rappers are no longer just gangbangers, they are rockstars, and everyone wants to be a rockstar, so expect a lot more of the same.

What you will see is less and less major artists. Mainstream Hip Hop is in dissaray and companies aren't out to sign big contracts because the content just doesn't sell 7 million records anymore. There is no reason in any music genre to sign the next big flop.

Now the positive side of this development is that rappers on a midsized stage like Keak da Sneak or Hieroglyphics will start to draw larger audiences because the walls that limited radio play will fall and fans will start saying "hey that dudes from Oakland, he's not on a major and he's selling 50K, there must be something tight about him" and picking up on a new artist.

But sadly, I think the over saturation and the bullshit artists in it for the money will always be around.

I could choose to spit if I wanted but I wouldn't throw my whole life savings to pursue a career in hip hop, it's a risk. It's just common sense... A fry cook could be the next biggest thing to blow but he's not gonna throw everything he has over hip hop.

If anything the form is taking on a new uprising and it's sad because the one's left behind will be the one's mainstream incorporates. Basically everyone will be feed a style and like right now today's best are the one's you never hear about.

i think a lot of the album sale problems occur in the mainstream, which isn't really being reported, but we know that underground rappers with very loyal fanbases (tech n9ne for example) will sell what they need to sell to keep making music

maybe if there is a lack of album sales for mainstream rappers, then labels will drop them

underground artists wont ever leave, and we know that independent artists make a helluva lot more money per album than a rapper signed to a major, so they'll keep going

i agree. thats why my next album will have no radio cuts
no radio cuts or no songs that are made with the sole intention of getting radio play? because from what i remember from the beat contest and the other samples I've herd from myspace and whatnot, you've got talent (on production, I haven't heard or don't remember vocals)...its understandable and actually great to hear that someone wants to make quality music, not just make shit for the radio or to be just like the next entertainer, I just think that people need to realize that music is made for 3 reasons:

of course there's money, some people have talent and just use that for financial gain.

then there's the personal level, there's something therapuetic about creating and then listening to what you've created.

But I think the most important part is making music for an audience. the joy of someone else nodding their head to the beat or saying "damn" as you drop that punchline, or the round of applause after.

I think music needs to be made with your audience in mind. of course more personal songs would be more meaningful to you, but if they are only felt by you then whats the point of putting it out to other people?

That's the truth. Let the suits go back to making rock singles, while we chill. Gold is the new platinum just like back in the day.

finally. imo, i think a lot of atl rappers are washed out n a lot of them rap bout money n whatnot. take 'we fly high' by jim jones. that song's got nothing 'art' related but rappin bout money n everything. these kinda songs are liked by all those teenybopper crowds n whatnot but r a disgrace to hip-hop itself. i guess i cant really blame them too much cuz they gettin money and thats what it boils down to in the end. same with 'this is why im hot'.

thats just my 2 cents not trynna diss any1..
