Give the dog love and attention. Don't play with him a lot when you first get him and then forget about him a month later. He (or she) will be your best friend, no matter what. Even if you have left him home all day, he'll still love you when you get home.
Also, get some good treats and reward him when he does something good and tell him in a stern voice "No!" when he does something bad. Only use "No!" or any other word for when he does something bad. If you use various words like "No!", "Don't!", "Stop that!", "Bad dog!", etc., it will take him longer to pick up when he is doing something he shouldn't. One word, dogs are simple-minded, just like men, so take those instructions for both.
Also, take him out to go to the bathroom right before you go to bed and right when you wake up, otherwise you will find lovely gifts in the middle of your living room. And be careful what, if any, other foods besides dog foods you give him, because some will cause him to throw-up.
I hope that helps. And good for you for getting him from the pound. That is where we got ours. Also, neutering a dog will calm him down a lot and prevent him to cause a female to have offspring that will end up where you got him and possibly worse. But only if you think neutering is humane.
