The California Highway Patrol on Friday was investigating what could be the sixth shooting this week on Interstate 580 in the East Bay.
Five times on Monday, vehicles on a stretch of the freeway were hit by gunfire. No one was injured.
The latest incident occurred at Strobridge Avenue in Castro Valley about 6 p.m.
The driver heard a loud noise that sounded like a gunshot, and the back window shattered.
CHP officials Friday evening were still trying to determine whether the window was hit by debris or gunshots, like those that hit five other vehicles Monday evening.
``We don't believe anyone is being targeted, specifically, but we do believe the incidents are connected,'' CHP officer Shawn Morris said of the previous five incidents.
The victims in the earlier incidents did not report the shootings for up to 48 hours, said CHP Lt. Jim Wills, which led to a delay in asking for the public's help.
All of Monday's incidents occurred between 6 p.m. and 7:05 p.m. along I-580 from San Leandro to Castro Valley.
In three cases, police found bullet holes in the passenger's side of the vehicles. Wills said police still are trying to determine whether all the bullets were fired from the same gun or whether the incidents are connected.
One victim reported that the assailant was a balding man in his early 30s, Willis said. He was reportedly driving a black pickup truck, possibly a GMC or Dodge.
Similar shooting incidents have plagued central Ohio, where a regional task force is looking into 24 shootings that may be connected. The Ohio incidents reportedly began in May but did not come to public attention until a woman was killed in November.
Anyone with information about the East Bay shootings is asked to call the CHP's investigative services unit at (510) 622-4609.
