AN EXTRAORDINARY "hyperspace" engine that could make interstellar space travel a reality by flying into other dimensions is being investigated by the United States government.

The hypothetical device, which has been outlined in principle but is based on a controversial theory about the fabric of the universe, could potentially allow a spacecraft to travel to Mars in three hours and journey to a star 11 light years away in just 80 days, according to a report in today's New Scientist magazine.

The theoretical engine works by creating an intense magnetic field that, according to ideas first developed by the late scientist Burkhard Heim in the 1950s, would produce a gravitational field and result in thrust for a spacecraft.

Also, if a large enough magnetic field was created, the craft would slip into a different dimension, where the speed of light is faster, allowing incredible speeds to be reached. Switching off the magnetic field would result in the engine reappearing in our current dimension.

The US air force has expressed an interest in the idea and scientists working for the American Department of Energy - which has a device known as the Z Machine that could generate the kind of magnetic fields required to drive the engine - say they may carry out a test if the theory withstands further scrutiny.

Professor Jochem Hauser, one of the scientists who put forward the idea, told The Scotsman that if everything went well a working engine could be tested in about five years.

However, Prof Hauser, a physicist at the Applied Sciences University in Salzgitter, Germany, and a former chief of aerodynamics at the European Space Agency, cautioned it was based on a highly controversial theory that would require a significant change in the current understanding of the laws of physics.

"It would be amazing. I have been working on propulsion systems for quite a while and it would be the most amazing thing. The benefits would be almost unlimited," he said.

"But this thing is not around the corner; we first have to prove the basic science is correct and there are quite a few physicists who have a different opinion.

"It's our job to prove we are right and we are working on that."

He said the engine would enable spaceships to travel to different solar systems. "If the theory is correct then this is not science fiction, it is science fact," Prof Hauser said.

"NASA have contacted me and next week I'm going to see someone from the [US] air force to talk about it further, but it is at a very early stage. I think the best-case scenario would be within the next five years [to build a test device] if the technology works."

The US authorities' attention was attracted after Prof Hauser and an Austrian colleague, Walter Droscher, wrote a paper called "Guidelines for a space propulsion device based on Heim's quantum theory".

even if they were able to create such an engine and hope to put it to use would it not require an equally powerful navigation system and system of sensors so the craft would not run into something during its trip? thus making such travel even further off in the future or imagination.

Good question. I would imagine it would be similar to that of how we currently send things into space. When we send a ship to Saturn, there is no navigational system, simply a set course it is programmed to follow. I'm sure scientists would do the same with this technology (assuming of course it is possible) and they would calculate where objects would be in the short amount of time. But, the article mentions that the engine would “slip into a different dimension” and that it would reappear in our dimension when switched off. I’m not exactly sure what this means and how this would affect space travel. Let me call Stephen Hawkings and I’ll get back to you.

are there other "objects" in a fourth dimention? how do you plot a course through a seperate dimention?

i know shit about physics and space travel and even less about interdimentional travel so i'm just wondering

Space/time is normally reffered to as the 4th dimension. We in fact live in the fourth dimension of the space-time continuum. The article says it would slip into a different dimension, so it wouldn't be the 4th, it would be some other dimension (5th, 6th, 7th, etc.). Newer scientific theories actually suggest that there could be ten, eleven or twenty-six dimensions (see string theory). The article mentions that this idea is based on controversial theory, it sounds to me that it's based of string theory.

Trying to figure out what extra spatial dimensions would be like is nearly impossible (for me anyway).

My understanding of String Theory is that space consists of both extended and curled up dimensions. The extended is what we’re familiar with, and the curled is supposedly deep within the extended. The first three (or four) dimensions are the ones we know. Six dimensions are compact dimensions curled up too small to be detected, and one (or more) are temporal dimensions. What exactly this all means is unclear and difficult for most to imagine.

So I don’t know if there would be objects in them. If there is temporal dimensions, then I suppose they could only exist during the travel, basically a way to link A and B.

I dont think there is any way that a human body could survive a magnetic field strong enough to distort space time the engine would destroy the ship and its crew with its gravitational pull.???

yeah that theory has no practical applications from where I sit

i read the actual article, its alot longer than what was posted and i was thinking the same thing how would a human being be able to with stand going the speed of light. possilbly they would buld some type of robot.
they also said that the magnetic field would be so strong that it would basically make its own gravitational pull, basically how on earth everything is normal to us because we have gravity but the earth is spining so fast and moving but we dont feel it<-- thats what they think they can do

my bad i didnt relize he had the link to the article
