About to read that thread.

But before I do, I want to say that I don't think that MMA is big enough (just yet) to even take up that discussion.

Wow, that shit got real racist real quick, lol ... Some knowledgeable cats over there though.

If Chuck would have won, UFC, Pride and MMA in general would have skyrocketed in popularity. All of the hype and press hinged upon Chuck avenging the loss to Rampage.

The week leading up to the fight, MMA had it's own tab on ESPN.com, and Chuck's face was all over ESPN.com, & ESPN. I went to ESPN.com 5 minutes after the fight was over, the MMA tab from the front page was gone and there was only a direct link to Sherdogg for info pretty much hidden in the upper right hand corner of the front page.

Like one of those cats said on sherdog, UFC didn't do a great job of marketing Rampage. If Rampage would have had at least one more fight BEFORE his title shot, he might have been a little more familiar to the casual UFC fan.

^^^^ I agree on the marketing part..BUT....didnt the audience boo Liddell when he fought Randy the first time?? In my personal opinion i really dont think they will like Page as a Champ. Why? Anderson Silva is your answer they dont like him as well and I think Silva is a class act..very respectful, humble, great fighter (not the best) but good. He shows respect when they interview him he never disses anybody yet people dont like him..Page on the other hand dont give a damn if they boo him or not, has a bigger mouth so i dont think the audience will like him..I actually enjoy him but thats just my .02

I don't think they liked him from the start.

At the weigh in...there were literally like 10 of us cheering for Rampage. And at the fight...seemed like it was like 98% of the fans were rooting for Chuck.

when Rampage won my friend immediatley said, "damn think how happy every black person is thats watching this" im white and wanted Rampage to win, but i dont think him winning really hurt the UFC that much.

on a sidenote i was just at espn and it asked what sporting event are you looking forward to most this weekend (memorial day weekend) and UFC was first over the NBA conference finals.

I don't see why everything in life has to be 'race based', especially sports.. Rampage won coz he was the better fighter, if white people are mad, they're stupid..

There are always some people who want this guy to win or that guy to win solely based on race which is totally ignorant. The same people that wanted Chuck to win because he's white are the exact same people I argue with when they claim that nascar drivers are athletes in the same sense of football players. I really wanted Rampage to win because I didn't think Chuck was as godly of a fighter that people hype him up to be. And people boo'd rampage because he carries a "bad guy persona", you can watch any of his interviews and he talks crazy shit lol.

See the thing is...

Rampage is a good guy, and you can even see that when he's trying to play the bad guy role. He's funny, and has a lot of character. Chuck is like a zombie, no character, seems like he has no personality.

And to a casual fan, that's not what draws you in. People want to be entertained, and Rampage is very entertaining inside and outside of the ring.

Wouldn't it be great if it wasn't? Fact of the matter is, (and as sad as it is) someone somewhere will always make this a topic of discussion as long there is an element of black vs white.

I love how when ONE black man wins in a highly white populated sport people come out and say now blacks dominate the sport. Golf and now MMA. Lol.

It doesn't matter what race the fighters are. In the end it's who's the better fighter. But it is natural for blacks to root for blacks and whites to root for whites. People tend to cheer on what they can relate to more. There's nothing wrong with that IMO. It's when stuff starts to become racist and hateful is when it gets out of hand.

And BTW that link is fucked. Would'nt let me have access.

Its a safe bet to market Chuck LIddell than it is Rampage only because LIddell has what 19 fights in the UFC. If the roles were changed where this was Rampages 19th fight and had the success of winning the belt multiple times I'm sure the marketing wouldve been in favor of Rampage. More sponsors are gonna be knocking at Rampage's doors and his face will be on every late night show and other forms of entertainment shows just as Chuck when he took the belt from Randy. UFC gave Rampage a nice intro segment on Spike when UFC had a nice weekly UFC Show, sadly was the last episode and for UFC 71 they did an UFC Access show which showed Rampage doin his thing. You could compare Anderson Silvas success winning taking the belt away from UFCs other poster boy Rich Franklin. People were more familiar seeing Rich Franklins face everywhere. When Anderson Silva got boo'ed in Cleveland it was because they were behind their hometown hero Rich, just like when an opponent comes to play in someone elses hometeam they are gonna get boo'ed, they gonna get boo'ed hard.

Fuck all that black vs white. It shouldnt be a focus in sports cause we all bleed the same red blood.
