how to start conversations with strangers?

Started at this jvs school program. most of the people in my lunch period is not from my highschool. i don't know anybody at this table. this chick told me to sit at her table. so i am sitting there with like 6 other chicks and a couple of dudes at this table.

the last 2 days ive been speechless. i don't know what to say. how do you start a converstation with a bunch of people that you can't relate with? I don't know anyone of these people

all i can say is what school you from and whats your name.... got any suggestions???

Just start complaining about something everyone can talk about. Gas prices, the war.. shit like that.

I'm good at talking to more than one person at a time, but one on one I am terrible. Usually in groups I just start complaining about gas prices or something my cat did, or that my friend called me at 2 am. It usually prompts people to talk about their pets, or cars or whatever. Or ask a question about something. Like if they have an easy time talking to new people.
