A multi-agency search including dogs, a helicopter and a plane in Kentfield for an escaped burglary suspect was called off after nearly two hours Wednesday, but the man was still at large.
Police said Mark Adams, 38, managed to escape from an ambulance at Marin General Hospital and vanish into the surrounding neighborhood. He was handcuffed in front and last seen wearing no shirt, jean shorts and white tennis shoes.
As a result of the search, Bacich Elementary School in Kentfield has been shut down for the day, but Marin Catholic High School has reopened.
A police spokesman said the suspect was taken into custody during a burglary at a San Rafael restaurant around 4 a.m. He was subdued using beanbags after a shuffle with three officers and taken to Marin General for observation. He was handcuffed and bound to a gurney.
As the ambulance backed up, the suspect somehow freed himself from his restraints, bolted form the ambulance and disappeared into the neighborhood, the spokesman said.
Twenty officers from several police agencies searched the neighborhood and nearby swamp.
