Rakim may never have achieved the stardom of peers like Ice-T or Chuck D, but he never lost respect among the hip-hop community, where he was acknowledged as one of the great rappers. Throughout the '80s, he was one of the leading figures in hip-hop as he and his partner, DJ Eric B., released a series of groundbreaking records. In 1992, the two parted ways and Rakim spent the next five years in seclusion, returning in the fall of 1997 with his solo debut, The 18th Letter. The Master followed two years later. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine
