How many of you know how to live/survive off the land? The reason I ask this is because a lot of people are conditioned to eat certain foods, and have no concept of eating off the land or eating for survival. If things changed overnight would you be able to survive, by eating off the land? My dad was basically a farm boy (and a soldier), and we used to have gardens around the house. Corn, squash, tomatoes, greens etc. My Big Mom (grandmother on my moms side) has a big ass garden in the backyard (she has a large backyard.) Raising mantids helped me to identify different bugs that were high in nutrients and different plans that are edible if cooked or eaten a certain way (like boiling certain parts or just eating the stem .)

I'm not sure if I could. I would like to say yes, but there's always a chance that everyone would be fucked...

But I know how to garden and plant stuff, cause my mom is into that stuff and still does a lot of gardening. I've done a lot of construction so I know a decent amount of stuff about how to build shit, pour foundations, build roofs, and stuff...As well as heating and cooling shit...I use to go camping with my mom and step dad--but it was REAL camping. Not that bullshit where you park your car, walk 5 feet and set up your tent....We'd go out into the middle of fucking nowhere, walk 3-4 hours and then decide where to set up camp...

I've actually thought about a lot of this stuff before cause I know one day we probably won't be able to depend on the infrastructure that is set up in this country...And corn is really bad for the soil Heresy, so don't be planting that shit! Try potatoes, they have more potassium than bananas....And corn takes out so many nutrients in the ground that you wouldn't be able to use the same spot again, either that or you could grow hemp or weed at the same time, cause hemp (not sure about weed persay, maybe) leaves the ground with more nutrients than it started with...

And about that bear...Dog you better have a HUGE strap and shoot that mother fucker like 5 times, cause they aren't gonna go down that easily. A measily little pistol isn't gonna do shit...Maybe you should look into a .50 cal rifle or somethin.

Anyway, good thread, I bet most people couldn't survive on their own...I'd just keep a rifle with me and kill some deer, but I'd actually eat the meat and shit...My step dad goes hunting a lot so I've had the pleasure of dealing with brains and shit...lol...

I can't start a fire, and I don't see me lasting very long in the wild. I can't grow food either. I killed a cactus and nothing I ever planted did well. I'd probably die in a few weeks if everything fell apart.

If everything were to collapse today we'd all die. Yes even those with their own sustainable utopian gardens that they think will keep them alive forever in case something bad happens will perish once roving mobs of pissed off greedy starving humans decide to pillage and destroy it; just like we do everything.
I think Butcher got it right about living off the land: roving mobs.

I think several of you are missing the point.I think some of you took the stuff about my pops and grannie and thought I meant growing your own food/veggies. I am not talking about living off the land as in growing your own food or living in a greenhouse. When I say living off the land I mean LIVING off the land and basically being a forager/scavenger. Do you know how to sterilize water? Do you know what wild plants are edible? Do you know how to cook certain parts of certain plants? Do you know what insects are high in protein? Do you know how to find these insects?

@Sixxness, pops used to grow corn in two areas of the house. The first back yard had a patch to the side and the second backyard (which was accessed via a gate) had a corn patch. He grew potatoes, and had a lot of success with different melons and squash, but he was never able to grow strawberries. He had a lot of success with tomatoes, and when the hornworms came around, I would pluck em off and feed them to spiders or mantids.

I would probbly die in a few weeks if that. It all depends on what suplies I had and what resources were around me.

I watched this show on Discovery Channel called Survivor Man and they sent this guy in the middle of the Bayou down in swamps to survive for 3 days with only a backpack full of supplies. He was an ex Navy Seal, he was doing some crazy ass shit to gather food and make shelter and build a fire. He used the lint from his sock to make a flint for his fire and he caught a turtle using sticks at the bank of the pond to catch it. Pretty cool show, I havent seen it on since. Then again I never watch tv.

I don't know much about eating random plants and stuff from the Earth, but I'm sure I could make something work.

Down with corn! lol...What's funny is that it's actually really hard for human bodies to digest, but so many fuckin people eat it. Hornworms huh? I need to start talkin to my mom about this stuff, that way if I ever have to go eat stuff in the forest, I'll know what's up. I think I'd have a decent advantage though, I wouldn't stay in the city-so there would be no mobs..I'd be out in the middle of fucking nowhere on my island god damn it! lol..
