Incorrect my friend...100k is on the very high side but close to 85 is very realistic. I remember talking to Tech in early January I think and the numbers were approaching 70k if I remember right.

If Tech sells 100.000 and he gets like 9$ for each CD sold? thats ALOT of money, he can live of that shit for 5 Years or something.. + all the money he makes of merchandise and concerts.. he aint never gonna be poor. thats for sure..

Sound Scan units or actual CDs sold? Because with the double CD numbers could be over inflated with Sound Scan.
Wrong, SoundScan counts per Unit (thus only 1 unit sold, even if there's 3 discs and a DVD), it's the RIAA that counts 2 for Double Discs.

Negative....one bar code, one scan
That's not 100% true.

There are some stores that are soundscan weighted here you will get more than one scan per sale. For instance in KC 7th Heaven is weighted to account for all the other mom & pop stores in the area that don't have soundscan.

no way hes makin 9$ a cd. fye was sellin them for $9.99 so i dont believe tech makes $9 off of that
yeah... im just guessing but i guess it's something like

-at least 1 dollar per CD for packagin costs
-some money per CD to Harry Fox (mechanical)
-the distibutor takes a cut
-then strange music gets some money from the records they've sold and some of this money goes to recoup for the money they've spent on payin producers, acquiring licences, marketing etc.
-then the rest of the money probably just stays in the company's accounts and travis and tech have a monthly income that they're paying themselves as "record company executives." some of that money is also ofcourse used to pay rent, computers, cleaners, secretaries etc.
- then tech probably gets a good amount of artist/performer "points" on every CD sold (compared to mainstream artists [not counting people like madonna and metallica because they took care of business and made it so that they get a more points per record.])

i'm definately not an expert on this but all this does not equal to 9 bucks a CD

edit: tech also gets some money as one of the "writers" of his songs. From ASCAP or BMI when the stuff is played on the radio and through other organizations (?) publishers (?) when songs are used on other mediums than radio

If anything, he probably receives between $2-$4 per cd. And that's a high margin. He probably hasn't begun to reap the benefits of sales. That's why it's important to him for MTVu to push him, so he can actually begin to see his money.

I know for a fact that he doesn't see that much money while touring, either. When he rents out Remington's, it costs close to $2,000 just for the nightly rent, damage insurance, electric hook-ups, manager/owner fee, merchandising, etc.

And the artists, for the most part, buy their own food and drinks with money they've made over the month, not money they've been alotted per day.
