So tell us a little about yourself Bobby?
My name is Bobby Brackins I’m from Oakland ca, currently residing in Los Angeles. I like to do anything creative that will leave a legacy and promote settledness. I aim to make the world a more relaxed and less stressful environment with good music and positivity. I go crazy when I haven’t during long periods of not being in the studio. I not only write rap songs for myself, but also pop and r&b songs for others. I’m a lover of music, fashion, photography, and film. I like to think out of the box and do the unexpected. I go hard. I live life. I inspire.
How did you get started with your music?
I have always had a way with words and have used an unique choice of vocabulary. In elementary school my friends and I had a rap group and we inspired to be like the Hot Boys lol. As my love of music and writing progressed I began to find myself attempting to write songs in a personal journal. My dad worked at a recording studio in downtown Oakland I began to meet a lot of rappers and became very intrigued with the craft. I went to radio shack bought a mic head set, uploaded a recording program, and downloaded instrumentals and started practicing recording myself. I began meeting a lot of kids in the Bay Area with similar interest and we started a group called Go Dav that got popular with a song called “Ride or Die Chick” and started doing shows and networking with serious people in the music industry.
Who has influenced you most and been your greatest inspiration?
Go Dav taught me how to grind. Being in the group gave me a vital insight about music and the lifestyle that is accompanied with being an entertainer. However, at the end of the day I inspire myself the most. The progress I have made is my greatest inspiration to keep making music and getting better at what I love.
What is your definition of success, and how much of it do you think you’ve achieved?
Success is achieving one’s goals and turning one’s ambitions into reality. I have achieved a lot of success, I am very blessed. I have had a video on MTV, been on some of the most popular websites imaginable, have been apart of multiple songs that have been played on the Radio, and have traveled and performed for thousands. I’m living my dreams. Although, I still have a lot of success to attain, but have already done a lot to be proud of.
In your opinion, what are artists lacking most now a days?
Free spirits, a lot of artist get so caught up in their personas that they lose sight of who they truly are. Artist need to focus more on making the best music rather than being the most popular. Artist need to believe in themselves, before trying to convince others to believe in them. Do you, and do it well!
What have been some of your failures, and what have you learned from them?
I have mad a lot of mistakes in my music career, all artist do. Understanding what I did wrong and correcting it has been pivotal to my success. I have learned a lot through trial and error. My first manager didn’t go hard for me, a lot of artist have tried to take advantage of my generosity, club promoters have tried to manipulate me, the music industry has a lot of untrustworthy people within it. I have learned to keep my guard up and not allow people to take advantage of me.
What advice would you give to others when it comes to life and business?
With business, always have someone review any contract you sign. Never assume that people have your best interest in mind. In life, live it everyday to the fullest with people you love and people who are settled.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 10 years?
In 5 years, I see myself at the prime of my music career, hopefully accepting an award at the grammies, for having revolutionized an aspect of music. In ten years, I would like to be settling down working on a family, traveling, and inspiring others to attain settledness. I don’t like putting dates on things though. God will make everything happen right when it’s supposed to.
Any upcoming projects for the 2010? If so what?
Yes, I’m going to drop my first solo E.P following an Album. I have a clothing line debuting in the summer; Designs By Clifton (Robert Clifton) and a lot of visual campaigns to promote my music and clothing.
