Grinding is different nowaday compared to back in the 90's. I feel you on that there is no right or wrong way.. but alot of trial and error. Some shit might work in some places, and some might not work in others.
---------------------------------------------------------------
Going to SD, I've seen how the street grind has paid off and that's a good thing. Artists are out there showing people and communication skills.. and possibly getting feedback on their product.
Anything online is good, majority of the time.
myspace - best free webpage for promotion. before kats had to buy their own domain page.. now its pretty much myspace is better and gets more views.. and if you really up on myspace, you kan make HELLA connections to alot of people.
forums - such as the siccness and others. Really, I wouldnt be up on alot of artists if it wasnt for siccness.net Plus many of those artists come on here to interact with their fans and that gives them more respect and makes a solid fan as well as the communication between artist and fan.
media sites(youtube/imeem) also can expose your music and underground video that probably wont make it to MTV. But can spread to various sites by your fans and if people feeling your style/music/message, then you made another fan.
Flyer/release date album... on the streets you'd have to pay for the materials and how many printed up as well as if you want it glossy or what not. On the internet, that 1 flyer scanned, can be spread thru out the net like nothing.. and free.
I was able to connect alot of people for various projects.. and on top of that, I was able to make some strong connections.
As for artists,
But puttin out a free mixtape, can show how good you are on the mic as well as on beats (particular producer/or style) and that can go along way. Before Jay Rock or 211 have dropped albums, how many mixtapes they put out??
Mixtapes seem to be the new grind/part of the new way to promote your self.
If you a DIY type person, you kan learn alot off the net.. make your own page, make your own beats, learn to read music notes, learn to write poetry.... learn how to do graphics... its all up.
Downside - not everyone gets on the net, not everyone is computer illerate, not everyone buys music (download) and if you put a bunch of bullshit videos up, you get laughed at (40 glocc).
