What about TV shows, movies, video games, books, magazines, newspapers, other kinds of music, etc.,? Hip hop cannot be blamed. An argument could be made that Hip Hop isn't doing much these days to change things around for the black community, but you cannot argue that hip hop is to blame for something that existed long before it was even concieved.
What's so hard to understand about this?

^^^theres nothing hard to understand about it. nobody said those things arent an influence too. like that guy said, theyre to blame too, and we're not putting sole blame on these things, but just placing responsibility. all those examples, tv, video games, etc. are all things that continue to disconnect people from reality, and yes are a bad influence (not all of them, but generally speaking). nobody's saying hip hop is the infection thats killing people, but rather than be an antibiotic, its a substance that makes the infection worse. and rappers and execs keep lying to themselves denying this because theyre so focused on getting rich. if you accept that point, than i dont see why you dont want to place blame on hip hop, not full blame of course, but some blame. makes perfect sense to me. unless you believe in the each individual is individually responsible for his actions idea, and refuse to accept environment influences peoples behavior

well white kids in the suburbs buy more rap music than anyone, so those excecs kids are effected too
yeah im sure theyre affected too but i think its on far smaller or just different level than black kids, simply because of being able to relate with the music. i think alota white kids just take it mostly as entertainment, while black kids see these rappers as entertainers but also as examples of something they want to grow up to be (along with athletes)

this guy is trying to defend hip hop through examples of artists like common and talib who are far from being hip hops poster childs. when talking about hip hop and the influence it has you cant ignore the 50 cents and soulja boys, because theyre the ones who through hip hop are having a larger affect on the masses. and its these hip hopers that guys like jason whitlock and stanley crouch are talking about, because in all reality soulja boy, tpain, lil wayne, etc. are a bunch of dumb motherfuckers who put out dumb fucking music and keep making kids think its cool to be dumb fucks like them
I couldn't have said it better myself.

Comparing music to video games is kinda retarded. They don't show Mario wearing nice shit with a bunch of bad bitches and nice cars...but they show 50 like that...and other cats like that. That shit is appealing to young kids, which is why they wear the same shit these rappers wear, and talk the same shit these rappers talk....they think it's cool.

We didn't really have these issues so much in the 80's and 90's because even if they were talking about hood shit, there was a message in music...there was a reason shit was being said. Hip-Hop these days involves many brainless acts and mindless children following in their footsteps...kinda like the Pied Piper. It's a mess. I love Hip-Hop, but this new version of it has kids dumber than shit.
