Hip Hop in the Park is a FREE concert/performance event to be held in March of 2005. This public event is an opportunity to utilize music and entertainment as a means to expose local community organizations, businesses and artists. We hope this concert will provide an opportunity to create a harmonious melting pot of culture, age, race, religion and economic status among the attendees.
This event will also focus on promoting a positive image within today's contemporary music genre known as Hip Hop. We plan to do so by eliminating the use of sexually explicit content and suggestions of drug abuse, racism, sexism, and/or violence throughout the event. Our mission is to create an appropriate atmosphere to support family values, education and positive morals for our youth.
This event will be funded through the collection of vendor fees, sponsorships, donations, and volunteer support. Any additional monies, proceeds or donations (with the exception of vendor profits) remaining will be gifted back to one or more community-based youth arts organizations (TBA).
The day will include positive reflections of Hip Hop culture through rap, spoken word, canvassed graffiti art, break-dancing and more. All artists on the bill will subscribe to this idea and will showcase their art in a way that will benefit and uplift the community. We hope to show the side of Hip Hop that is often overlooked, but is always alive and kicking in the underground scene.
The event will also have a festival vibe with a wealth of local vendors selling food and crafts as well as various local community organizations with informational booths for the patrons.
We are receiving a ton of interest and support already from the ASU student organizations, local DJ's, MC's, poets, community leaders, media and businesses. We hope that the park board recognizes the benefit that this event will have for a community that is often ignored, stereotyped and silenced. This is an opportunity to show the city what Hip Hop is really about and do it in the place where it all began--the park!
