When does night officially start?!?!?!?

I filled out an insurance form from an accident and the question was:
"Did the accident occur at night?"
and i replied "No, but it was dark"

I think night starts at 9pm. And my mom yelled at me saying "NO! Night starts at 6pm."

So what would you think?

Well in the military we were instructed to say "Good evening" after 4:59pm. So I'd have to go with 6pm by default. But, in some places like Alaska, it's "night" time 24/7 for month's on end.

So that means that the time of night changes throughout the year? In the winter it must be night at 5:00, and in the summer it's around 9:15.....that's weird......I'd say night starts around 6:00......
