Candidates are campaigning for the upcoming presidential election in ever-stable Guatemala. One of the candidates running for office is a guy named Efrain Rios Montt. During the long civil war in this country, around 1982-83 he led a coup to overthrow the government. He was only in power about a year, but is said to be responsible for the worst atrocities during the decades-long civil war. Some think he should be brought in for crimes against humanity.

When the war ended and the constitution was made in that country, one of the parts said that ex-coup leaders could not run for president. However, he found a loop in the constitution claiming that it did not apply to anyone before the constitution.

So now he is running for president of that country. He claims to be an evangelical minister now. Personally, would you vote for someone that has a history like that? It looks like a lot of people are. It seems like it would be like letting Milosevich run for the Serbian presidency again.

(I am probably leaving out some info here, so feel free to fill it in. This is just a summary of what I've read in the news lately.)
