Police say a drug suspect shot an 8-year-old girl during a shootout with undercover police officers near downtown Los Angeles.
Officer Ana Aguirre says the girl was hit in the chest while she was playing with friends on a sidewalk about a block away from where three drug suspects pulled over in a car Sunday night.
A passenger got out and opened fire with a semiautomatic handgun. The officers in the unmarked car returned fire.
The girl was in front of her home behind the officers when she was hit. She underwent surgery Monday morning and is expected to recover.
Police say the suspects drove away in a 1998 Toyota sedan and are still at large.
