This week hopefully! Been bugging and hinting for one for the longest. If I don't get it...I'll just have to break bread for one. I don't know how to play...but going to devote countless hours in learning. Bass for me is hypnotizing. I love the way it sounds ...especially in Jazz. I want to play over my percussion tracks and just vibe for hours. Anybody in here play?

Edit: What are some good beginner lessons on video to look up. There are COUNTLESS on the web. Hopefully someone here knows what's what and the best of the group. Thanks in advance.

I have no fucking clue....I took some lessons for guitar (I saved a guitar & bass from being sold at a garage sale) and just applied those lessons to the bass.....although I still suck at both, but at least I'm able to play simple riffs, read tab, and do hammer-ons & pull-offs....

although right now the bass is missing the E string because I tried to change the strings and it broke :(

The bass is definitely DOPE. Wish I could play it. However, the sad thing is people hardly ever use E. Bass elements in their HipHop beats anymore. It's all either synthetic bass or pitched Kicks. That's why I always will prefer 90's Hiphop, the beats were more full and complete IMO, like Jazz n Funk. Gotta love that Funky Bass.

Dont get some shit like a Fender P. That is some whiteboy shit. Thats what I started with. The pickups being high and close to the strings will make a loud crack when you slap or pop strings. And I dont know if you are gonna get into that but it's nice to have the option.

Basically jazz pickups are set lower, closer to the body, so when you slap or pop strings it wont sound like shit. Other than that, hook up with a bassist or someone at a music store who knows what they are talking about.

Sounds like a keyboard, unless they really changed it at the mixing stage. it sounds hella phat for a real bass. but that'd be cool if they could do that.

That first example sounds more like a Synth Bass. Or atleast a synth bass is capable of sounding like that. I do really like that deep sub bass tone though. Sounds really clean & round, nothing too sharp.

Yeah I love the smooth ass g funk mob music bass. But that's why I was saying it sounds like a keyboard. I like the funky shit with slaps and pops, but for just ridin and kickin it, nothin beats that mob bass. The funky shit aint bad either. Bootsie is a boss!

Damn I like that. Really relaxing and I could hear a rapper singing a life story, reflecting over it.

Thanks man, that was kind of my intention. I prefer these atmospherical type beats. I try to make shit that sounds more chill, more atmoshperical shit that you can think to, more soul. Like you said, a rapper telling a life story or something. I like beats that you can actually rap a story over. Not yell or other aggressive shit that beats these days make you do. I love using real elements like guitar, piano, bass, strings in my beats. I'm not too big on all the synthy stuff these days. If I do use synths, most of it is going to be softer sounding leads or pads. I guess you can call my style more "oldschool," but I just call it "real" music.

Yeah I just like to make good loops and let them ride, with tiny little subtleties and smooth changes. I like to stick towards the real sounds but sometimes I find some cool little sounds and subtleties that arent real. But my main melodies and harmonies are usually real sounds. Even my more agressive beats still use real sounds.

You know whats a tight underused real instrument:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Koto_(musical_instrument)
I dont have a real one but I've used the keyboard for it.

Electric bass is good. But you really need to learn your scales if you want to get anywhere with it. Just like any other instrument. The style of play is important also so practice strumming, picking, slapping, etc, with all of your fingers.

Peace.

If you do get it, get guitar pro, it's helping me a lot as i'm learning the guitar. I have almost the entire mysongbook archive and it has some bass excercises also. Along with countless songs with bass parts.
