If you filled up your gas tank Monday in Washington, you paid an average of $3.145 for a gallon of regular unleaded, the second-highest average price in the country.
And if you pumped gas in Bellingham, on average you paid a nickel more than in Seattle and a quarter more than in Spokane, according to AAA.
Why do we pay so much in this state? And why are there such differences in prices?
State officials want to find out what drives the state's gasoline prices and why prices are consistently higher here than in other states.
Attorney General Rob McKenna, the Governor's Office and the Department of Community, Trade and Economic Development launched an investigation Monday to analyze pricing patterns, the first such comprehensive investigation in 16 years.
"Washington consumers frequently wonder why gas prices are consistently higher in some areas of the state than others," McKenna said in a statement.
