Not a great off-season for San Francisco 49ers Quarterback Jeff Garcia. First the team doesn’t make the playoffs. Then Wide Receiver Terrell Owens torches him on his web site. Then he guts picked up for a DUI. And now this. He is denying rumors that he is gay. In an interview with a newspaper, he says he knows that there are rumors that he is gay, but that he isn’t. “I’ve heard the rumor myself that I’m gay. That is not the case. I’ve had girlfriends in the past, and I do want to get married some day…. part of it is the label. Being successful, being single, being the quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, speaking properly, having a sense of style. A combination of those things gets you categorized as being gay…. I heard quite a bit of that when we played in Oakland and I heard it in Philadelphia. I don’t take it personally.” Garcia.
Well, isn’t that nice. Nothing like having to tell people you aren’t gay. And I am shocked that he would hear stuff like that in places like Philly and Oakland. I would think that those places are very tolerant. I would think that Eagle fan and Raider fan would never stoop to name-calling or rumor spreading. Not those guys. Those guys are above that sort of thing. Sure they are. Garcia also says that the gay rumors followed him when he was playing in Canada. “I don’t know if it is how I speak or what it is about me that presents that sort of label, but I don’t know how many times I have to be out in public with a girlfriend to stop that from being said.” Well, apparently it is going to at least be a few more times. Because it hasn’t worked so far.
Is this really what we have come to in professional sports? Are we to a point where if a guy is single and in his 30’s that we automatically assume he is gay? Are the Mike Piazza and Jeff Garcia ‘I’m not gay’ press conferences going to start a trend? Are all athletes going to have to hold a presser on their 30th birthdays if they aren’t single to declare their heterosexuality? “I’m here today to celebrate my 30th birthday. And despite the fact I’m not married, I am not a gay man. Thank you all for coming out.” Ridiculous. I am more concerned about the guy driving his car around town moellere dup than I am about whom he goes home with at night. Grow up people…. as for the Raider and Eagle fans, well, they are a lost cause.
