LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Eric Gagne's major league-record streak of 84 consecutive saves ended Monday night when he blew a 5-3 lead for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Chad Tracy's RBI single in the ninth inning tied the score after pinch-hitter Luis Gonzalez's RBI double. Tracy's single went past the glove of first baseman Olmedo Saenz, who dived for the ball.

Realizing that Gagne's streak was over, the crowd at Dodger Stadium gave Gagne a standing ovation as he stood on the mound with his head down.

He already had the record beat by like 20 or 30 or something.

I don't think another pitcher will even get close in our lifetime.

yup, the way it goes now really much of an accomplishment. I mean gagne's streak was great but I think it ionvolves more luck than anything else. Plus I read somewhere that suring his streak he only came in 4 times with a tying run on base.

I was really hoping the giants would break his streak

Gagne's streak involved skill, luck and good defense.

Eck didn't really go 2-3 innings, at least when he was with the A's in 88-90, they won a lot back then and he was closing almost every day of the week. They weren't gonna have him go for more than an inning when he's coming in to close that often. He does have one of the top 5 longest save streaks though, I think he was like 4th or 5th. They should have that list on SportsCenter today until the new one comes on.

Oh and Gagne blew a save at the All Star Game once but they didn't count it cuz it wasn't regular season.

and the funny thing was that blown save in the all star game was the only save opportunity that he has had that has really had any meaning. it lost the NL home filed advantage in the World Series. all his other saves have meant jack shit

I think that's the other way around... The All Star Game and home field advantage don't mean shit if you ain't going to the World Series... I doubt Gagne gave a fuck about winning that game, I think the Dodgers came in 3rd in their division that year and were barely over .500 at the end of the season. I'm sure any player in the All Star Game would tell you that any regular season game is more important to win to them than the All Star Game.

I still don't understand what the big deal is. He comes in and throws one inning. The guy throws 98 mph with a change and curveball. One inning is easy. Any other pitcher could have had a streak like that: Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, etc. To get a save, a pitcher should have to throw a minimum of two innings.

Remember Orel Hershiser throwing 59 consecutive scoreless innings. Now that's a real streak.
