Fresno Police Make Video Arrests
June 10, 2005 — New developments after the release of a controversial DVD. Fresno police announced that they have arrested 17 people in connection with the DVD titled "Fresno Uncensored."
Police say when their investigation is over, it could end up in as many as 40 to 50 arrests in all. Police have been picking through the DVD long before it was released to the public — identifying crimes and faces that appear in the DVD.
All but one of the arrests was made on Thursday and police say they have several more individuals they are still identifying and getting warrants on.
Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer says the video is a disgrace for Fresno and has harsh words for the DVD creators. "It is what I believe to be an absolute slap in the face of Fresno residents," says Chief Dyer.
"I believe that the individuals that put this video together are irresponsible, they are individuals that are trying to promote the gang lifestyle ... to demonstrate the type of activity that gang members are involved in." Fresno police are also enlisting the assistance of the FBi in the investigation. They say some of the obvious crimes in the video are reckless driving, active participation in a street gang, violation of probation and parole and possession of drugs.
Police say they believe the acts in the video are real and do not believe the people who appear in the video are actors. The police chief says that he knows that many people are curious to see the 90-minute video in its' entirety, but is urging everyone in Fresno to boycott the DVD.
