Matthew Groff , age 9 got his first taste of hip hop with a boot-legged Run DMC tape and scratching his cousins Beastie Boys records on his dads turntable. Spark didn't really attempt making his own music until 9th grade recording rap songs onto radio shack tape decks. It got a little more serious when he met Progress at Evergreen High School and started recording tracks onto a karaoke machine. A few drum machines, turntables and keyboards later they met up with another fellow Vancouverite Rocket One from Poor Urban Souls. They formed the group called "The Means" and made some local underground classics...
As a Dj, Spark is a underground hip hop, turntabilist, quick mix specialist. 2002 he released "Vinyl Frontier", Northwest Order was formed, and Dj Spark started opening up for the likes of Kool Keith, Q-bert, Dj Craze, Dj Klever, Zion I, Styles of Beyond, DJ Swamp, 5 Fingers of Funk, Killah Priest, Big Daddy Kane. He also has performed with locals Thorn City Improv, Myg, Dj Void, Papercut, Sick Mediks, Children of the Thorn, and dozens of others. He has his own Pro Tools studio now, "The Matt Cave" where hes living hip hop to the fullest. Currently Spark is working with various talented Portland hip hop artist adding scratching and production on albums for Akword, Lightheaded, Santotzin, Myg, Kiew Nikon, Gold, Sulfur, hosting Spark1200.com and finishing his follow up mix cd
