East Bay rapper Keak Da Sneak takes 30 days in jail
Charles Williams, also known as Keak Da Sneak, was arrested over the weekend in Hercules. He remains in jail without bail
An East Bay rapper admitted his involvement in a weekend police chase and took a 30-day sentence as part of a deal. Charles Kente Williams, 38, who goes by the stage name Keak Da Sneak, was arrested Saturday on suspicion of driving with a suspended license and evading a peace officer, as well as an outstanding warrant for a probation violation. He was held without bail following his arrest.
But at his first court appearance Thursday, prosecutor David Webster agreed to allow Williams to serve a 30-day sentence on a probation violation. In return, no charges will be filed against the rapper in connection with Saturday’s incident.
Williams was given six days of credit for time served, meaning he will be eligible for release in 24 days. He spoke briefly in court Thursday, answering “yes” when a judge asked him if he had evaded police on Saturday, and agreed to show up to a probation appointment within five days of his release.
Williams’ career as a rapper has spanned nearly 30 years. He gained fame in the mid-1990s as a member of the Oakland rap group 3X Krazy. As a solo artist, Williams was responsible for several major hits out of the Bay Area, including the 2006 hit single “Tell Me When to Go,” alongside Vallejo rapper E-40, and the song “Super Hyphy,” in which Williams takes credit for coining the term “hyphy.”
Williams was arrested around 1:23 a.m. Saturday, when an officer tried to stop a black 1988 Ford Mustang near San Pablo Avenue and Victoria Crescent West, police said.
When the Mustang failed to pull over, police chased it for a quarter-mile before the driver lost control on Paradise Drive. The driver, later identified as Williams, tried to run away, but an officer caught up to him and arrested him as he tried to enter his apartment, police said. A post on Williams’ Instagram account denies he was trying to enter anyone’s home.
He had an outstanding probation violation warrant due to having missed appointments in May and June, according to a superior court judge.
