With the harder economic times I'm thinking about getting rid of cable. But I would like to keep the channels.

I've known people with the boxes that got PPV, HBO, Cable, all that. But never knew how.

I've heard of people that got satelite TV by buying something off the internet. A dish and a box I think.

Any of you do this? Anyone point me to a site that I can buy a box or something like that from (or what I need to look for on ebay/craigslist)?

I heard if you have a dish hooked up to your house you can download some kind of software and get free EVERYTHING. I mean PPV events, movies, NBA league pass etc etc.

do some research on www.ftatalk.com . I run with a coolsat 7000. I would not entirely cancel your cable. Because some times they black out the signal and you got for weeks without being able to watch free tv. also a previous ufc, and the pac man de la hoya fight was blacked out, this last ufc was still good though.

I pay for basic dn service and I can just switch the signal to my box and watch free tv...

i recently got set up with Dish Network.....i get every channel and PPV events. You basically just put a dish network satellite up and using this Apache eBox you download a file to a usb stick and load it into the box, then you get all channels. it gets zapped every few weeks so you gotta keep checking online for the newest files. if you want more info let me know although I havent found the box for sale online anywhere. its this one though

I don't have cable because it's something extra I can't afford right now. Usually I just download tv shows from the internet. But if anyone has any info on how to do it for free Kudos.

I'm cool paying for basic cable too if you need to have some kind of "legit" cable in order to get the premium channels.

I'm just sick of paying for stuff I don't watch and having to pay extra for shit I might watch occasionally.

If you run with an fta box through dn you'll just pay $29 month for basic, and just switch over to you fta box for all the premium. You must have dn service or have a dish pointed at their satellite for it to work.

For cable, if you know what you're looking for, you can go out in front of your house (or down the street a bit), take a part that big green box and connect the cable yourself. I don't think you're going to have free PPV or anything but you won't be billed.

www.fta-newbies.com

im runnin an old pansat, i switched to this as soon as directv stopped bein hacked like 4-5 yrs ago, but i heard coolsat and viewsats are some of the better brands for the new boxes.

but jus know that it might not last that much longer. dish network is giving new smart cards to their subscribers, which means new signal, so these old hacks for FTA will not work. and no one knows how hard it will be to hack and when if ever new hacks will be released. like i said it's been 4-5 yrs or so since the new directv cards came out and they still never cracked those, so if you cash out for a system, jus keep in mind it might only work for a few more months till they complete the card switch.

I just read up on FTA. at that site dude posted above
www.ftatalk.com

In the forums they talk about the switch. Here's a question someone asked:

I have a question to you FTA old timers.

The satalite transmision is changing from N2 to N3 and everyone will need a new fix. These fixes that came from the Gods of computer software were treasured when needed from the change came from N1 to N2 .For those who have been around long enough , can you tell me how long did it take to find a fix when they switched to N2?
(2 months, 4 months, 6 months ???)
/QUOTE]

answers:

Of course the coders were hard at work before it even happened but if I'm not mistaken we were down 19 days.

My understanding is that nag 2 was being used in Europe for a few years prior to DN using it here. It was hacked be someone in Spain around the same time it was implemented by DN. Within 3-4 months most fta boxes had fixes.
