Fox News apologises for Kerry fabrication

Oliver Burkeman in New York
Monday October 4, 2004

The Guardian

Fox News, the influential rightwing US television network, said yesterday it had "reprimanded" its chief politi cal correspondent after its website carried fabricated quotes attributed to John Kerry, in which he called himself a "metrosexual" who enjoys getting manicures.
The network, owned by Ru pert Murdoch, apologised for the article in which the Democratic challenger was quoted telling a rally in Florida: "Didn't my nails and cuticles look great? What a good debate!" Comparing himself to the president, Mr Kerry was supposed to have said: "I'm metrosexual - he's a cowboy." Women voters, he purportedly added, "should like me! I do manicures."

The article appeared under the byline of Carl Cameron, who has been following Mr Kerry on the campaign trail. It had been posted on the site, the network said in a statement, because of "fatigue and bad judgment, rather than malice."

"Carl Cameron made a stupid mistake and he has been reprimanded for his lapse in judgment. It was a poor attempt at humour and he regrets it," a Fox spokesman, Paul Schur, told the Los Angeles Times, though he would not give details of what action would be taken against Mr Cameron.

The "metrosexual" story taps into a persistent theme underlying the election race, in which the Republican party and its supporters in the media have sought to make a campaign issue of the candidates' perceived masculinity.

At the party's convention in New York last month, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger called Mr Kerry's advisers "economic girlie-men".

A metrosexual, the fake Fox article helpfully concluded, "is defined as an urbane male with a strong aesthetic sense who spends a great deal of time and money on his appearance and lifestyle".

Carl Cameron is fucking hilarious whenever he reports on Kerry or other liberals. Watch him. The smirk on his face threatens to explode into outright laughter at any given moment.

Although I bet he will now tone it down.

That's the real bias in Fox News...the kind of unspoken hatred for all things non-Republican that persists in their "unbiased news reports".

Fuck looking at O'Reilly or anyone else. They are supposed to be opinionated. Where the bias comes through is the "news reports" and "headlines".

Does it matter? Does CBS have anything to do with Fox News?

Fox News who supposedly distinguishes itself from all other networks as the only "fair and balanced" news is exposed as a fraud. Think about it next time you tune in and swallow all the cum they gush out.

i cant stand him, he's just as bad as an al franken or michael moore to me. he makes no attempts whatsoever to conceal his bias. it would be alright if he had his own opinion show but he's supposed to be delivering the facts, not his commentary

Isn't this true of all FNC "news" show, anchors/hosts...I'm not including the obvious opinion shows, ie The Factor.

Agreed phil, and degrees of Cameron's attitude are in every single show on FNC.

Roger Ailes, the main guy at Fox, fired every single "liberal" from Fox News management when he took over. He fucking fired them...lmao!

FNC always points to surveys about shit like "Oh 9 out of 10 journalists want Kerry" "Journalists are often liberal"

What about their own fucking channel? All they can muster out of the 40-something reporters and correspondants is one liberal. Ok, they have two. They have "Greta", who doesn't even talk about politics, and the little milquetoast Colmes, who is the walking punching bag of people everywhere.

Fox News is such a fucking joke, O'Reilly and the whole fucking clan are such blatant idiots if they actually believe they are fair and balanced. O'Reilly and ilk come from a political environment where right is center, and anything remotely left is the "far, far left", the "oogie bogeyman left".

Every day "Fair and Balanced" O'Reilly makes some comment about the "wacky far left". When he talks about the "far right", though, it's a mention of some church, some schoolteacher, or some wacko state legislator in some bumfuck Southern state.

Kerry's liberalism is a big subject; Bush's far right conservatism is not. Kerry's wife is a "firebrand", and Laura is just a gushing sweetheart. Pointing out mistakes or flaws in Kerry is "callin it like I see it". Pointing out Bush mistakes or flaws is "Bush bashing".

O'Reilly, Hannity, and most of the other people on most cable news shows are intellectual lightweights. They're fond of hearing a 30 second debate on an issue that could take up an entire show, ganging up on one person with someone else who agrees, then framing the issue so the less intelligent willpick it up.

The "O'Reilly or the Hannity "framing" at the end of issues goes something like this:
Person 1 "We need to supprot X measure because it will benefit Y"
Person 2 "We need to support Z measure because it will accomplish V"

O'Reilly/Hannity (without possibility of being challenged) "Well this is really an issue of T, and that's what it really boils down to."

FNC regularly derides PBS as being "liberal", but PBS's programming 99 times out of 100 is miles beyond this sort of mental midget presentation. Charlie Rose, in fact, is an extremely good neutral moderator who possibly runs the most intelligent, insightful show on TV. Bill Moyers and Alan Alda's shows, while "liberal", present a comprehensive and intelligent argument often for both sides.

The debate between Pat Buchanan and Bill Moyers, for example, on gay marriage was over 20 minutes long and an absolutely good and well-thought out debate on both sides. We see nothing like this on Fox...only a 1 minute bleep where people are forced to condense arguments into ADD segments, just so at the end of their speech Bill O'Reilly can "really" let the audience know what the core issue is.

FNC has the best ratings of any news channel because they are the Jerry Springer of news, plain and simple.
