What about Scott McCloughan though?? I thought he was the personnel guy.
Everyone knows Nolan had more say than Scot McCloughan. McCloughan was only GM this offseason and we didn't make many moves. Mike Nolan let it be known he had no interest in acquiring a QB thru the draft and made zero attempts at getting a veteran QB here. Nolan had the final say and word is he was even calling the shots after McCloughan was named GM because they were close and Nolan is the one who brought McCloughan to the Niners to begin with. But even with that said, Nolan claims they BOTH got together and made the choices. Seeing as how Nolan wore the pants in that relationship, it's safe to assume Nolan had more pull than Scot.

But if McCloughan proves to be an issue, as Nolan did, then we should dump his ass too.

Im glad Singletary got the nod, id rather see what he can do over these 9 games remaining, and if it dont work, then maybe they will consider martz next year if theres no better candidates, we already know what martz can do, now with singletary a HOF LB with a killer instinct, the Defense should be more aggressive
shit, if Singletary calls more than 2 blitzes in a single game, it'll be considered more aggressive.

Ray Ratto had a pretty good take on the firing - he definitely has some points.

http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/10/20/SPPI13L0TS.DTL

some excerpts:
Choosing Mike Singletary rather than Mike Martz to replace Nolan has its intriguing side - Martz's brain exploding in frustration as he learns he is not going to be on the fast track to his next head-coaching job immediately comes to mind. But given that Singletary has not been a head coach before, common sense suggests that he could have used the extra week for preparation.
The end of whatever passes for the Martz era. If he can't be an interim head coach, he logically can't be the next official head coach, and he surely didn't come to San Francisco for the untrammeled joy of perfecting J.T. O'Sullivan. Martz came to watch Nolan get fired so that he could inherit the job, and now he has been skipped for Singletary.
For those of you who wanted Nolan gone at all costs, congratulations. You win. Only once again, you lose, because Nolan is merely the sneeze that leads a clever diagnostician to the pneumonia above. The real problem remains: the complete and utter absence of a sensible and unifying vision for the franchise.

martz crashed and burned in detroit.....singletary will give the squad a new attitude.

imo martz is where he's supposed to be.....singletary has the rep and respect from the players....they'll follow him without question
