Are we settling for less these days? This came to my mind today when I was bumpin C-Bo's "Enemy Of The State" and its coo and all, but then I threw in "The Best Of C-Bo" cd and got that feeling that all them Yay and Sac classics give me when Im slumpin them. Those years (93-97) were such classic and phenomenal years for the Yay. Now there was some good shit that came out before and after that period of time, but during the heyday it was like you could buy almost anything from the Bay and it was slumpable. WHERE DID IT GO WRONG? There is soo much discretion on my part to buy a Bay or Sac cd these days that it pretty much takes all the fun out of my music-listening expierience. I gotta be truthful and say that there isnt a Bay release these days that Im feeling like those from 93-97. Does anybody else agree that we are settling for less these days? Who else finds themselves only knockin the classic Yay shit? I know people say that the music is changing, and its good for musical growth, but I feel the Yay/Sac aint changing for the better musically. How can we regain our glory years?

That's what I'm sayin... I like the older shit better, but I don't think I'm settling for less when I buy some of the newer shit...

There are lots of people who only listen to classic rock and not none of the new shit... Just a matter of taste...

WELL WE ALL HAVE OPINIONS..... FOR INSTANCE, I FEEL "ENEMY OF THE STATE WAS BO'S BEST ALBUM BESIDES "TALEZ FROM THE CRYPT".... DONT GET ME WRONG, I FEEL STANDARS ARE REAL LOW AT THIS POINT, BUT SOME OF US ARE GONNA MAKE A CHANGE ABOUT THAT..... THOSE THAT DONT FOLLOW, WONT BE ABLE TO SWIM IN THE WATER.....

I THINK WERE AT A TIME WHERE NEW CATS AND OLD NEED TO STEP UP OR STEP OUT....

I FEEL YOU THO, I USED TO BUY 2-3 RAP CD'S FROM SAC/BAY EVERY TUESDAY OR SO, BUT IN THE RECENT YEAR OR 2, I JUST DONT FIND TIME TO GO THEIR THAT MUCH... UNLESS IM PROMOTIN SOMETHIN... I HAVE FOUND I NEED TO LISTEN TO ALBUMS 3-4 TIMES BEFORE I LIKE THEM.... I WANT SOMETHIN TO HIT ME RIGHT WHEN I PUT IT IN MY CD PLAYER.... BUT THEIR ARE MILLIONS OF REASONS WHICH WE HAVE COVERED ON BART SO MANY TIMES... THAT IM PLAIN TIRED OF IT.... TIRED OF THE NEGATIVITY.... I JUST WANT TO FORGET ABOUT IT ALL, AND START ANEW!!!! START ALL OVER AND LETS MAKE IT HAPPEN ALL OVER.....

THOSE 93-97 DAYS ARE GONE, AND NEVER COMIN BACC..... BUT THEIR IS NO DOUBT, IT CAN BE AS FUN AS IT WAS BACC THEN... JUYST GOTTA GET THE RIGHT PEOPLE DOIN THE RIGHT THINGS!!!

i think whoever said times change gave you the answer..

i think the music now a days, with the exception of few, really lacks the attitude and emotion it had back in the day (92-96 to me)

^^^^ But why does it lack? What made the music lack whatever it was that made it so good. And no doubt, I could feel a lot of shit that comes out these days, but I can't FEEL it, ya dig? I know that times change and so does music, but like I said before, the change doesnt seem like a good change...I just want to know what you guys think the factors are for the change. The Bay used to be envied for our music scene, and now were just forgotton, even by our own radio stations, even by a lot of Bay music listeners which tells me one thing... WE AIN'T AS TIGHT AS WE ONCE WERE. Seems like Earl 40 is the only artist holding the Yay music scene together for the rest of the country to recognize and even he hardly gets the respect he deserves outside the Bay. And even though this is my opinion, Ive talked to a lot of people who share the same opinion. That tells me maybe its not just an opinion anymore, but a truth... a sad, ugly, truth about our once-dominant music scene that a lot of Bay folks dont want to face. I love the Yay Area, and I love music...and it just bothers me that the music I once loved the most don't even appeal to me anymore.

its hard to really put a finger on it. the radio doesnt play shit, which can go either way. 1: no exposure, no money for better productions, features.. keeps artists from getting bigger, and getting the attention more towards the bay. only good side is 2: less artists making radio-friendly songs, so you got that hardcore sound regardless.

i think a lot of what is lacking is production. you got a lotta really talented producers in the bay, but the real underground motherfuckers (not 40, San Quinn, JT etc.) cant afford to fuck wit em. meaning you got some lower quality beats, shit like that.

the bay rap scene is going to get MUCH better. believe that. now that ppl like B-12, Moe, Nate, Rob etc. are trying hard to unite it, shit.. i dont think we can be stopped. the bay has more underground talent then any region in the country, it just needa be uncovered. once our radio stations start fuckin wit us again, your gonna have ppl like Wax, Jacka, Droop, Woodie.. Reese, Mac and AK, shit a lotta these motherfuckers gon blow the fuck up!

east coast/ NY Rap: shitty lyrics, coo beats (if you like east coast shit) but a whole helluva lotta promotion, exposure, and fan bases. they got bigger fan bases on the west then our artists do!

west coast / bay rap: the best delivery, the best lyrics, the most talent. the least exposure, the least promotion, the least fanbases. if we can turn that around.. mothafuckers in Queens are gonna be jockin '65 G'z in a Jordan Briefcase'.. 'Full Metal Jacket'.. whatever we have to offer. whatever we are GOING to have to offer.

shit is slow right now, but stick around another year or two. my best guess, you wont be dissapointed.

I got four Words:

TC AND THE ENHANCER.

DRE DOG
RBL POSSE
IMP
TOTALLY INSANE
SHIT LOADA OTHERS I'm TOO FADED TO REMEMBER

We need some producers that put out heat like TC and the Enhancer did. They brough consistent heat with everything they put out. What are they doing these days when the bay needs them most??

tc & the enhancer was doin the damn thang for frisco. most of the raw shit was done by them. but what i really think that makes an album tight....

THE ROTATION OF THE ALBUM IN YOUR STEREO!!!

shit like that would make you remember the lyrics, beats and order of songs from the intro to the outro of the cd. cuz these days, shit is droppin like crazy, 3 bay albums every tuesday. what was it like back in the day? i was a broke ass so didnt really know when shit came out, cuz i couldnt buy it. but the reason why you can knock that old bay area shit from beginning to end, today.. is mainly because that shit was in heavy rotation when it came out. got used to the shit you know. cuz for me, i had the UDI "UNDA DA INFLUENCE" playin all the way to las vegas and back on this one trip i took. from listening to that cd for that many hours, i done remembered the shit.

I gotta disagree with you Tim....you say that the bay has the best underground talent, that is only because your from the bay area....people from the east coast think east coast has the best underground talent and people from the south think the south has the best underground talent....No offence to anyone but for the most part I don't see real tight lyrics comin from the bay or anywhere for that matter...a select few in each area but that's about it, all these concepts are played the fuck out.

^^^ There was a time where I honestly believed that the Bay had the best underground talent, but that was because everything I heard from the was appealing to me more so than any other music...those days are gone, and that is what I miss, and what we need again... I was talking to my brother about this and we came up with a theory:

Back in the begining the Bay Area artists were hungry and felt that thier talent was thier asset in the rap game and they did thier shit themselves (producing, promoting, lyrics, distribution)...but the best Yay artists being soooo good got signed to big labels and thought it was all gravy from then on out. But then industry rule 4080 kicked in and all of our beloved Bay Area artists either got fucked over or became engrossed with the big buisness side of the industry more so than the art of it. This buisness end infiltrated our grassroots rap game and basically divided and conquered. A lot of artists just to stay alive in the game had to turn out product, which probably wasnt up to par with the shit they did before in which they put in alot of effort on the actual album. This time to keep afloat, the effert is put into the profit-making more so than anything. Money was always a factor in the Bay Area rap game, but now it was all hustle and not so much the art. Where theres a good hustle, theres good money. So now everyone out the woodwork is on the hustle tip with not so much quality out there. Theres more good hustlers than there are good rappers in the game now, which is cool for buisness, but sucks for the art. The game has become more about the good skill of hustling, than the good skill of music. The hustler is more important than the listener. We see this, we accept it, we emulate it...and now everybody and thier baby mama got an album out, making a quick buck. Meanwhile, the radio don't play our fly-by-night songs, and your album cover means more than the actual tracks. There are those artists doing it right, the hustle and the art working together...but alot of them aren't. Its all about skrill not skill...and I really can't be mad at that... we all need to make our bread in the way we know how to, and I can't knock the hustle, but I can always wish for the music that is put out there for us to be good on the eardrums and damaging to my speakers. Just like back in the Yay heyday.

Is my theory legit?

The music of now is just as good if not better im my opinion is it was then. Then you had the GLP, now you have Fully Loaded. Then you had C-Bo, X Raided and Lunasicc droppin quality shit, and they still are now but in C-Bo's case a little less hardcore. Same with Lynch. Now you got Tech9ne droppin dope shit. Quinn and Yukmouth are on their own level, I cant think of an MC on the radio that can really outwit and battle them. The Riddla is commin up too. You also got AP9 now bringing absolute HEAT similar in my opinion to the shit Bo was droppin 6 years ago. Mac Mall is still spittin vicious as well. All the bay needs is a few more newcomers in the next few years and its set. Also, Oakland needs to breed more rappers. To me it seemed like 6 years ago EVERYTHING was from Oakland, and now I cop one or two albums a year from the town.

And the production is getting better as well. Dion and Icy Mike and the Done Deal camp got too much heat, so does Femi and DJ Yon and the folks that do Mall's beats. Ric Rock is still droppin heaters as well. Those folks are just as good as nearly anyone avalible in my opinion.

If you woulda made this statement 2 years ago though, I would have agreed with you. There wasnt SHIT crackin in Bay area music from early 98-early 2001. I kinda seperate the eras like this:
First Generation: 1989-1993
Second Generation: 1994-1997
Third Generation: 1998-2000
New Generation: 2001-

Of course Generations are much longer than three or four years, but the music seems to change a lot in these periods at least i think.

Like I said before I agree that times change and music changes with it...but I feel that the Yay aint really on a smooth transition into these changing times. The only Yay cats Im feeling anymore is 40 Water, Cellski, and Nickatina...cause these cats dont change with the times, they are the ones responsible for changing the times! E40 always comes tight regardless year after year, Cellski's Mafia Moves was a tight ass display of that classic Frisco funk updated for 2001 and beyond, and Nickatina's whole career always brought fresh air into stale times.

So you see, I know times change and music changes, but I feel the Yay can do it a little better than we are now, just like the 3 artists I mentioned above are doing. (There are others too)

This is my view.....I look at it like baseball. Baseball has expaneded so much that there are many players that should be in the minors in the big leagues.

In the same respect in this day and age of the independent label, we have been bombarded with much much more music in the past. While this has brought us some very exceptional talent.....it has more so borught hoards of average to below average rappers that make the overall quality seem less.
