DALLAS — Floyd Mayweather Jr. met with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban this week to discuss competing in mixed martial arts.

"We're definitely going to work together," Cuban told The Associated Press after the Mavericks' game Friday night. "It's just a question of in what capacity. You just don't jump from being a boxer to an MMA fighter overnight. He's got to test the waters."

The story was first reported by ESPN.com.

The 30-year-old Mayweather is considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world and boxing's No. 1 drawing card. His fights this year with Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya generated 3.25 million pay-per-view buys, more than $200 million in revenue and earned him about $50 million.

Cuban owns a fledgling mixed martial arts promotional company called HDNet Fights. He's put on two events so far, the latest in Dallas on Dec. 15. The bouts are shown on Cuban's HDNet.

"It would be huge," Cuban said. "He's an icon in boxing. He's conquered that world. He is the champ and he wants to be the biggest grossing all-time champ as well. ... Having him work with MMA and HDNet Fights would be huge. It would take it to a whole other level."

Mayweather and Cuban became friends when they were both contestants this year on "Dancing with the Stars." Cuban was Mayweather's guest at the Hatton fight in Las Vegas on Dec. 8. Mayweather knocked out Hatton to retain his title.

Mayweather and Cuban met again Thursday in Las Vegas and discussed the Mayweather's possible role with HDNet Fights.

"We discussed him coming out to some of the gyms and one hand helping some of the fighters we're working with on their boxing skills," Cuban said. "And on the flip side, he can get a sense of what it's going to take to make the conversion."

Leonard Ellerbe, Mayweather's adviser and best friend, told ESPN.com the welterweight champion and was seriously considering a move to MMA.

"It's definitely something he is interested in, and when Floyd makes his move, obviously it's going to be a mega event," Ellerbe said. "We don't have a timetable. Floyd is taking some time off, but Floyd understands what is involved. You have to take time to go out and understand what you're getting involved in, and he's ready to do that.

A few boxers, such as former heavyweight contenders Ray Mercer and Frans Botha, have attempted to compete in mixed martial arts with little success.

well obviously he would have to train a whole lot before stepping into MMA. He wouldn't just step in there and be 100% boxer, I'm sure he would train with the best for at least a year.

I don't doubt he couldn't be good at it because he's one of the best athletes in the world, add to that he's extremely quick, well conditioned and can take a shot. But why? What's there really to prove? Plus the other thing is his biggest weakness is his brittle hands, which break frequently when he fights. The gloves are a whole lot smaller in MMA so that poses a serious problem/risk.

I wouldn't mind seeing him do like one or two MMA fights just for the fuck of it, I'm sure it would be a huge event and would be good for both sports, but to switch careers would be stupid as fuck, imo.

I still think Mayweather would get murked in MMA. It's a whole different sport. You can't learn ju-jitsu in one year. Mayweather would get handled in a cage match. He don't know how to kick, fight on the ground, use his knees, none of that shit. Great boxer but he should stay in his lane.

Mayweather would get DESTROYED in MMA. He's definitely one of the greatest boxers of all time but this isn't boxing and those 4oz gloves don't transition the same as 16oz gloves. You don't learn how to sprawl and grapple in a short period of time. Your going against Brazilian Jiu-jitsu black belts and division 1 college wrestlers. GTFO with Mayweather in MMA even tho i'd pay big money to see him face a guy like Uriah Faber at 145 who would leave destroy Mayweather's ego.

It all depends on who he's fighting, how much training he got, and assuming the guy even takes Mayweather down in the first place. A boxer, especially a quick boxer, will always have a punches chance. You never know, Mayweather could land a 6 hit combo to dudes face before he ever touches him. Or of course he could miss and get tapped out.

Personally I think Mayweather could win some fights in the MMA, against the right opponents. He's a great athlete and has the skills to do it. On other hand, I also think he would lose some too. He definitely wouldn't be top 10 or anything like that, but he could take out a few people no doubt. Regardless, he should stick to boxing, but like I said it would be pretty tight to see it happen once or twice!
