I just got rid of my 20 gal fresh water tank. Too much work (for me). And yeah, fresh water tanks are a lot easier to maintain. But salt water tanks are nice.

The only fish I had were Tiger Barbs in my tank.

The 1st thing u need to know is, whenever u get a tank, u need to cycle the water for 4-5 weeks to get the good bacteria levels up, and the bad levels down, There are specific fish to use in the water during this time which are very hardy and strong, for fresh water u can use Albino skirt tetras i believe, theres another type of fish that u can use but the name of it escapes me atm, basically anything u need to know, i can help u with, 1 of my jobs is working with fish and reptiles :)

ill take some pics @ work today and post em up later,

basically, most freshwater fish are dull in color, while saltwater aquariums are more desirable, u can fuck with some live rock, corals, and nice ass fish

Im planning on getting a Saltwater aquarium myself, but i have a few personal reptiles i need to sell before, and i have about 15 tanks @ home unused from 10 gals, to 60 gals taht i needa sell off too,

But anyways, my plan is to get like 3 pieces of live rock, a few different corals, a few anemies, A clownfish, a Puffer, a Yellow Tang. either that or a octopus (there are miniture 1s, we also have 1 @ work, ill take pics if its out today).

Saltwater isnt too much more of a hassle than fresh water, u just gotta do testing to make sure salinity is right, and buffering, (both are easy as hell), and like fresh water u gotta make sure ammonia, nitrate and nitrite levels are low, and have the PH adjusted accordingly (easy as well), and u also gotta cycle Saltwater for 4-5 weeks as well with some Damsels.

Overall id say fuck with saltwater, theres more choices, cooler fish, and looks better...

pics to follow later........

I'm interested in it too, but it does seem like a lot of work.

How do you do things like make sure salinity is right? Buffering, what's that? How do you make sure ammonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels are low and adjust the PH?

What's the cost of setting up a good fresh and/or salt water tank?

How do you cycle the water at first? What does this process include?

What kind of equipment do you need other than a tank?

R.I.P Goldie, my African Cichlad.

If you want a fish that will interact with you, this is the type of fish you want. Goldie(R.I.P.) used to do some crazy ass shit. He used to jump out the water, and bang his head on the cover to let you know he was hungry. As soon as he saw you, he would start swimming all crazy to get attention. He would pop his head out of the water, and let my girlfriend pet his head. The only thing about Cichlids, are the are very aggressive. You have to raise them together, because I bought some smaller ones and he ate their heads.
