Finland and South Korea remain among the superpowers of education, according to a major international study.

The three-yearly Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) shows that the two countries are in the top five for reading and maths.

South Korea has made rapid progress since 2000, says the report - with its pupils improving by the equivalent of a whole school year.

The rankings are based on tests taken by 15-year-olds in 57 countries.

lol, yep, its great ol' america for ya.

http://www.ed.gov/inits/Math/glenn/ClewellForcier.pdf

explains the entire trend and how it started in mid 80's and only has been getting continuously worse(the decrease of adequate math and science teachers in our public schools, nationwide)

damn tho, they knew this was getting outta hand in '85, yet we there were BARELY any programs that were started in order to change it up..

loan forgiveness and cancellation is pretty much the only incentive that every state offers to teachers now, other than that there only a few states here and there that have random monetary bonuses and whatnot for math teachers.

shit tho, "...National Center for Education Statistics show that of the 43 percent of schools that had vacancies in mathematics in 1993-94, 20 percent found it difficult to fill these..."

i randomly decided to become a math teacher last year, without any knowledge of these deficiencies though..

btw, finland produces some kick ass metal bands.
all i ever heard in the car/house/ipod when i was with my ex.

The US is full of complainers, its annoying "im not getting the education I would in S. Korea and its everyone elses fault!"

ITS BULLSHIT!

If you want a top notch education go to the library every day and read a new book. Its that fucking easy. If you are a dumb fuck drop out and have nothing it your own fault!

This is absolutely true, however you do not mention where the real problem is - people just don't have the desire to be educated and this is why they are dumb.

This is a ridiculous statement. Children are not going to go out of their way to go to a library to get a "top notch eduction" because they do not yet understand the importance, especially children aged under 10, the most critical years of child development.

Further, going to a library and reading books is not considered a "top notch eduction" by any means, children need teachers and schools to provide more than simply reading books.

The blame certainly cannot be placed on children or even parents, only society as a whole and more importantly the government. When every president in the last 40 years or so has cut funds to eduction you know there is a serious and much larger problem.

This is a direct result of the failure of capitalism, more specifically Amerikan capitalism, which spends less and less on social services like education, in combination with probably a more sinister philosophy to create non-thinking workers. What is that old saying? It's easier to control a group of dummies than smart people, something along those lines.

And there's the economical factor - if it is cheaper to import already educated people from Europe and Asia to do the brain-intensive work than to educate your own people, the capitalist will do exactly that...

Agreed. I tell the kids in my family to get the best education they can possibly get or they will end up at best being miserable low-level workers or at worst, drugged-out crackheads. Either way, the international community wins when they get a special visa to come work for a corporate America.
