Ever since he performed with his brother in a talent show in the third grade, Jason Terry, a guard on the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, has loved music. Today, he announced the formation of Tha Reason Records, his independent record label and the product of his life-long love.
Mentored about the music business by both Master P of No Limit Records and Jermaine Dupri, VP of Urban Music at Virgin Records, early on in his basketball career, Terry knew that he would start his own label once he was successful enough to properly finance it.
The first group on Tha Reason Records will be West Coasta Nostra, featuring four former gang members of varying affiliations from Seattle, WA and Tucson, AZ- Gangsta Nutt, Rob Rollie, Dirty O (Terry's brother) and Blue the Vet- who have made peace between themselves and seamlessly meshed to form a hip-hop group. Their first album project, "The Shakedown," features guest appearances from Bone Crusher, The Brat, Yukmouth, Kurupt, Bun B and Jazze Pha and is expected to be released later this year.
"Each of my artists was affiliated with a gang at one point in their life- the Crips, Bloods and BGDs. This record will be the first time that members of these groups has come together peacefully and produced something really great," Terry explains. "This project will further people's minds- knowing that there are other options than that lifestyle- whether it be basketball, rapping, furthering your education or becoming a lawyer or doctor."
Tha Reason Records will be releasing a mixtape with DJ Drama on September 17th, as well as the first single, "What It Is," featuring David Banner, expected to impact radio around the same time. In addition, the group will be featured on the November issue of Smack DVD magazine, with a video for "Mad Azz" featuring Bone Crusher.
