Final 2002 Super 25 football rankings

Updated Dec. 24, 2002

Addition: No. 25 Phoebus (Hampton, Va.) debuts in the Super 25 rankings. Phoebus beat Stafford (Fredericksburg) 39-13 to win the Group AAA Division 5 crown.

Performer of the week: Chase Wasson of No. 12 Southlake (Texas) Carroll threw for 490 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another score in a 45-14 victory over Smithson Valley (Spring Branch) in the Class 5A Division II final. Wasson helped Carroll become the first school to win a state title in its first year in a higher class. Last year Carroll competed in Class 4A.

Extra points: Dennis Keyes of Birmingham (Van Nuys, Calif.), who's headed to UCLA, ran for 156 yards and a score in a 35-7 victory over Taft (Woodland Hills) in the CIF City Section final. ... Terrell Jackson of Centennial (Corona, Calif.) scored eight TDs in an 57-55 overtime win against North (Riverside) in the CIF Southern Section, Division V final. ... Jay Lucas of Redemptorist (Baton Rouge, La.) ran for a Class 3A title-game record 257 yards on 34 carries in a 31-19 victory over Patterson. Lucas also tied a record with four TDs. ... Parkview (Lilburn, Ga.) won a state-record 45th consecutive game in a 28-7 win vs. Brookwood (Snellville). The victory surpasses Lincoln County (Lincolnton) set from 1989-91. Parkview became the first school to win three consecutive state titles in Georgia's highest class since Valdosta from 1960-62.

Milestone: Chris Jones of Heritage (Lynchburg) became the first Virginia High School League coach to win back-to-back state titles at different schools during a 34-7 victory over Lafayette (Williamsburg) in the Group AA Division 4 final. Last season Jones led Bath County (Hot Springs) to the Group A Division 1 title.

Last hurrah: Coach Dick Dullaghan, 301-56 in 30 years at Ben Davis (Indianapolis) said 2003 will be his final season. Dullaghan, who guided Ben Davis (12-3) to its third Class 5A state title in four years with a 31-7 win vs. Snider (Fort Wayne) in November, has won an Indiana-record eight state championships.

Prolific passer: Ben Mauk of Kenton (Ohio) set three national career passing records: completions (1,105), attempts (1,931) and yards (17,534). Mauk, who says he'll attend Wake Forest, also threw for 179 TDs, second all-time. This season he led Kenton to its second straight Division IV state title, while passing for 6,540 yards and 76 TDs and running for 1,385 yards and 18 scores on 192 carries.

Instability: Nineteen schools from Florida and Texas appeared in the Super 25 rankings. Florida had 11 different schools ranked and Texas had eight.
