San Antonio bout leaves boxer unconscious

SAN ANTONIO (AP)—Welterweight contender Oscar Diaz had surgery for bleeding on the brain and was in a coma after collapsing between rounds of a nationally televised bout in his hometown.

The 25-year-old fighter was taking a beating from Delvin Rodriguez on Wednesday night at Municipal Auditorium when he collapsed on his stool before the 11th round.

Ron Katz, a matchmaker for Star Boxing, which promoted the fight, told The Associated Press that Diaz was in a coma and not breathing on his own after the surgery.

“My understanding is they had to remove on the left side a part of his cranium to get the swelling down,” said Katz, citing information he said came from promoter Donna Brooks. Katz said Brooks was at University Hospital in San Antonio with Diaz.

Katz said Diaz’s vital signs, including blood pressure and temperature, were good.

“It’s touch-and-go, very critical,” Katz said. “But the doctor, from what I’ve gathered from Donna, was optimistic.”

Katz said injuries like Diaz’s are usually career-ending. He came into the fight for the USBA welterweight championship with a 26-2 record and 12 knockouts.

“What one hopes for is that he pulls through,” Katz said, calling Diaz a “strong kid.”

Katz, who was at the fight, said Diaz had been taking heavy blows before he collapsed, but that “he was in there pitching.”

There was no indication anything was wrong, Katz said, until Diaz stood up to begin the 11th round. Then he put his hands to his head and “yelped” before collapsing.

Referees immediately stopped the fight, declaring Rodriguez the winner by technical knockout, and doctors jumped into the ring to attend to Diaz. He was placed him on a stretcher and taken to University Hospital.

“EMS reacted so quickly and got him to the trauma center so fast that that really gave him a fighting chance,” Katz said.

Hospital spokeswoman Leni Kirkman said she had no new information Thursday morning. She did not immediately return a phone call later in the day.

yeah that scream he yelled out when the ref was talking about him just prior to him falling was bizarre. Shits all bad. From what I've been reading it seems like he will pull through this, which is very lucky since most cases when you see a boxer with a swollen brain collapse in the ring they either die or are left brain dead.

So it looks like Diaz is improving and will pull through. Bad news is he will have a very long recovery.

Doctor says boxer likely to survive brain injury

AN ANTONIO (AP)—Welterweight boxer Oscar Diaz remains in critical but stable condition two days after collapsing during a fight, but the doctor who performed surgery on him said he should survive.

Dr. David Jimenez said Diaz is still in a coma, but that is to be expected after a severe brain injury.

“Overall, I think ultimately he should survive the injury and should recover,” Jimenez said.

But Jimenez said it’s too early to tell whether the 25-year-old Diaz, who collapsed before the 11th round of the televised USBA welterweight championship fight Wednesday night, will be able to lead a normal life.

“I think the fact that he’s young, the fact that he’s healthy, the fact that he doesn’t have a whole lot of medical problems, is on his side,” said Jimenez, who removed a piece of Diaz’s skull to relieve brain swelling.

Also helping matters was the quick care Diaz received ringside and his fast transport to San Antonio’s University Hospital for surgery, Jimenez said.

The 5-foot-10, 147-pound fighter was taking a beating from Delvin Rodriguez in the fight before he collapsed onto his stool in his corner. Referees stopped the fight, declaring Rodriguez the winner by technical knockout.

Jimenez said the swelling, which was accompanied by a small amount of blood on the brain, has gone down. He said Diaz is on a ventilator to protect his airway, but that he is breathing on his own.

“I would expect that he would be in this state probably for the next couple of weeks and then slowly the recovery will take place,” Jimenez told reporters.

Ron Katz, a matchmaker for Star Boxing, which promoted the fight, said Thursday that injuries like Diaz’s are usually career-ending.

Diaz’s promoter, Donna Duva-Brooks, said his camp is encouraged by his progress.

“We’re all devastated by this,” a statement said, noting that Duva-Brooks’ husband is Diaz’s trainer and her father is his manager. “He’s been a son to us for the past 12 years and we hope and pray he recovers from this injury.”

Diaz’s mother, Theresa, said in the statement that “we’ve been overwhelmed by the love and support we’ve received from everyone. It’s helped us stay strong for Oscar during this difficult time.”

ya think there's gonna be a different quality of life after he recovers?
always with brain injuries. From what I understand the MD right now isn't sure whether or not his brain functioning will return to what's considered 'normal' or the best case scenario so to speak after he recovers.

His return to a boxing career is pretty much just fantasy after an injury such as that, let alone recovering with full cognition as well as hand/eye coordination.
