To the boxing fans, what's some great fights within the last 5 or 10 years? I'm trying to build my collection of great fights (shit like corrales/castillo, ward/gatti, etc.) and being that I dont have hbo/showtime and typically only see the big ppv fights, I'm sure there are a shitload of great fights I've missed.

I don't care if they're big names or not, just highly entertaining fights.

Much appreciated comrades.

It depends on what you consider a great fight.

Some people like KO's, others like Chess Matches, and others like brawls.

A great fight to me is something you aren't expecting. Such as Calzaghe and Lacy, that fight was not supposed to happen that way but it did. Calzaghe schooled Lacy. Even more recently is Klitschko vs Byrd. Sure we all knew Klitschko was going to win easily, but that was also total domination.

Here is my list of DVDs for reference (since yuor trying to build your list). Let me know if I can help.

G-man/Benn

Thats a few off the top of the head.

that last one is the best fight ever, hands down, in my opinion. simply because gerald the gman mcclellan never fought again, it was in england and everyone wanted benn to win. and because, before kneeling down and giving up the fight and now being fully dependent on his sister to survive his near blindness, etc, mclellan had knocked nigel benn through the ropes in the very first round, almost puttin his ass on the scorers table. then he knocked him down again later in the fight. but after enduring benn's constant hittin on the back of the head and just takin too many punches, the gman had to kneel

they layed him in his corner and take him out on a stretcher and in a neck harness. he was never the same. just such a good fight, and at the time it was so important, mclellan beat roy jones jr and was about the same age as him. he had his whole life and career in front of him and this fight put an end to it. its very sad to watch still to this day.

also, ward vs burton was a very good fight, after ward looked to be done and was losing on the card i believe, ended up fuckin burton up! most irish mickey ward fights are good ones. his wars with arturo gatti are my second favorite fights of all time, i think it was round 8 of the second one that was the best round of fighting ive ever seen

A great fight to me is a chess match or an all out war. Of course I enjoy watching complete domination (I have the Klitschko/Byrd) or like Mayweather/Gatti and KO's are always fun, but more so I enjoy an evenly matched fight.

Here is my list of DVDs for reference (since yuor trying to build your list). Let me know if I can help.

...
Damn comrade, that's a big list. What is your source for these DVDs? I primarly use a boxing torrent site but I've found that it can be difficult to seed so my ratio is always subpar, and the download speeds are not always that great.

Thanks for everyones help, much appreciated. Now I got some serious downloading to do

The G-Man

gerald the gman mcclellan
Record 31-3-0 KO's 29 KO % 94 1st Round KO's 20

beat roy jones jr as an amateur

fight with nigel benn 2/25/95 Gerald challenges WBC Super Middleweight Chamion Nigel "The Dark Destroyer" Benn for his belt. Gerald is #1 contender. Benn is knocked out of thering in the first round. Gerald collapses at the end of the tenth round and is taken to Royal London Hospital, where a blood clot is removed from his brain the following day. He spends 11 days in a coma.

Scores at time of stoppage: 87-84, 85-84 for McClellan and 84-84.
Referee: Alfred Azaro

theres a real nice painting you can get a copy of for donating to his charity fund (it costs 70,000/yr to take care of him now and all his boxing money was spent on medical bills), im bout to cop it and frame it

To add on to your story about the fight mentioned:

For my money, the fight between Nigel Benn and Gerald McClellan definitely belongs among the pantheon of these epic encounters. Yet it is very infrequently cited when battles of this nature are discussed. This is almost certainly because of the tragic aftermath that left McClellan blind, half-deaf and severely disabled.

yup this is what he looks like ten years later, and i agree this is why people dont talk about this fight in the same light as other greats because a man was changed forever that day, when he was just about to realize all his greatest dreams, one of the best fighters of his day who knows what he couldve accomplished

I've been watching boxing for about 17 years.
But I also keep tabs on old school fights.
Here's my top 10 favorite fights of all time....

1) Jose Luis Castillo VS Diego Corrales I (both fights were great)
2) Marco Antonio Barrera VS Eric Morales I (best trilogy of all time)
3) Arturo Gatti VS Micky Ward I (second best trilogy ever)
4) Marvin Hagler VS Tommy Hearns (this fight ranks higher on other peoples lists)
5) Muhammed Ali VS Joe Frazier III (best heavyweight fight ever & best heavyweight trilogy ever)
6) Artuo Gatti VS Wilson Rodriguez (one of the best come from behind victories ever)
7) Julio Cesar Chavez VS MeldrickTaylor 1 (this fight is what made me a fight fan)
8) Michael Carbajal VS Humberto Gonzalez I (pioneers of the smaller weight classes)
9) George Foreman VS Ron Lyle (Most explosive heavyweight bout ever)
10)Nigel Benn VS Gerald McClellan (Tragec end to a great fight)

Other great fights....
Naseem Hamed VS Kevin Kelley
Aaron Pryor VS Alexis Arguello I
Michael Moorer vs Bert Cooper (5 knockdowns in 5 rounds)
Ray Leonard VS Tommy Hearns I (2 legends in their primes)
James Toney VS Vassiliy Jirov (best cruiserweight fight I've ever seen)
Miguel Angel Cotto VS Ricardo Torres (if it weren't for the Castillo/Corrales bouts, this would've been the fight of the year last year)
Micky Ward VS Emanuel Augustus (best fight on ESPN FNF ever)

Now those are some of the greatest fights of all time.
Who are we kidding here? We all love boxing for the drama and action.
I understand that technical chess matches are entertaining in boxing (B-Hop VS Taylor for example), but NOTHING beats pure blood & guts wars.

I love boxing....
Too bad it has such a bad reputation.
But watch any of the fights listed and you'll realize in the end that the benefits out weigh the negatives....
