Wrestlemania 1
WrestleMania (sometimes referred to retrospectively as WrestleMania 1) was the first WrestleMania professional wrestling event from the World Wrestling Federation, which took place on March 31, 1985 in New York, New York at the world-famous Madison Square Garden.
However, contrary to popular belief, WrestleMania was not the inaugural pay-per-view event in the WWF's history. It aired only on closed circuit televsion, set up in various venues throughout the United States. The first actual pay per view event the WWF, held on November 7, 1985, was called The Wrestling Classic. The first WrestleMania to be shown on pay-per-view was WrestleMania 2, held on April 7, 1986.
For the first WrestleMania, Vince McMahon began cross promotions with MTV and several celebrities like Muhammad Ali, Liberace and Cyndi Lauper appeared during the build up to and at the pay-per-view.
* When Hulk Hogan and Mr. T walk through the backstage area towards the ring, Vince McMahon can be seen off to the side.
* A technical glitch ended the closed circuit broadcast early into the showing at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. To appease angry fans who pelted the screen with garbage, WrestleMania 1 was broadcast in its entirety on a local television station two weeks later.
* A long standing rumor says that Bruiser Brody was offered a large sum of money by a rival promoter to jump over the protective guardrail during Hulk Hogan and Mr. T's entrance and injure Hulk Hogan before the main event.
* Hulk Hogan and Mr. T appeared on Saturday Night Live together to help promote this WrestleMania.
* This WrestleMania, so far, is the only WrestleMania not to feature a match with the WWF/E Championship on the line.
* Pat Patterson was the in-ring referee for the main event.
* Both Leilani Kai and Matt Borne would return to Madison Square Garden for WrestleMania X. Kai lost another Women's title match, only this time she was challenging reigning Women's Champion Alundra Blazye. Borne competed in a "mixed" tag team match as Doink the Clown with Dink the Clown against Bam Bam Bigelow and Luna Vachon, which they lost.
* Greg Valentine becomes the first in a long line of Intercontinental champions to retain his title at WrestleMania despite losing the match.
Wrestlemania 2
WrestleMania 2 was the second annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. It took place on April 7, 1986 at three venues:
* The Los Angeles Sports Arena in Southern California
* The Rosemont Horizon in Rosemont
* The Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Long Island, New York
Each venue had one main event match with a large undercard. As with the first WrestleMania, the matches were shown on closed-circuit television across North America. This was the first WrestleMania to use cardinal numbers. The commentating teams consisted of Vince McMahon & Susan St. James in New York, Gorilla Monsoon, Gene Okerlund, Cathy Lee Crosby & Ernie Ladd in Rosemont, and Jesse Ventura, Lord Alfred Hayes & Elvira in Los Angeles.
* This was the first WrestleMania to feature one of the Hebner brothers, Dave Hebner.
* This was the first WrestleMania to feature a ref bump.
* This was Mr. T's final WWF appearance as a competitor.
* The Steel Cage match marked the first time the WWF Championship was contested in such a match.
* This is also the only normal cage match in WrestleMania history. The closest would be the Hell in a Cell match at WrestleMania XV.
* Davey Boy Smith and Bret Hart would return to the Rosemont Horizon for WrestleMania 13. There, Smith and Owen Hart retained their World Tag-Team Championship after they fought Vader and Mankind to a draw. Also, Hart defeated Stone Cold Steve Austin in a submission match.
* Hercules, Tito Santana, and Hulk Hogan would all return to the Los Angeles Sports Arena for WrestleMania VII. There, Hercules and Paul Roma lost to the Legion of Doom, Santana lost to The Mountie, and Hogan beat Sgt. Slaughter for the WWE Championship.
* Bill Fralic would later reappear in the WWF on July 4, 1993 at the WWF Stars and Stripes Challenge, where he attempted to bodyslam Yokozuna.
Wrestlemania 3
WrestleMania III was the third annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. The event was held in the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan on March 29, 1987.
It is particularly notable for being reported as setting an attendance record of 93,173, the largest North American indoor crowd to witness a live sporting event and largest paid crowd in the history of professional wrestling. It held the overall indoor attendance record until a visit by Pope John Paul II broke the record. The actual attendance of WrestleMania III was later revealed, by the event's promoter Zane Bresloff, as being 78,000 with 75,500 paid. Regardless, it is widely considered to be the pinnacle of the 1980's wrestling boom.
* The announcing team for WrestleMania III were Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura.
* The show also featured Aretha Franklin's performance of "America the Beautiful," and appearances by Bob Uecker and Mary Hart.
* Aretha Franklin had been stuck in traffic mere minutes before WrestleMania III went live and therefore, performed "America the Beautiful" without a sound check.
* Vince McMahon claims that just before he announced "Welcome to WrestleMania III!" he could feel the spirit of his father, Vincent J. McMahon.
Wrestlemania 4
WrestleMania IV was the fourth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. It took place in the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey on March 27, 1988, with an attendance of 14,000.
The event featured, among other things, a Tournament for the WWF World Heavyweight Championship which was vacated after a controversal match between Hulk Hogan and André the Giant.
* This was the first Wrestlemania not to feature Hulk Hogan in the final match of the evening, or as champion.
* This WrestleMania featured 16 matches, making it the WrestleMania with the most matches.
* The second WrestleMania to have a DQ or Count-out ending to a title match. The Honky Tonk Man becomes the second man to retain his Intercontinental title at WrestleMania despite losing the match, and the first to do so by disqualification (Greg Valentine was countd out at WrestleMania 1)
Wrestlemania 5
WrestleMania V was the fifth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. It took place on April 2, 1989 in the Trump Plaza in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and was attended by 18,946. The event was commentated by Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura.
* The Blue Blazer was played by the late Owen Hart, and made his debut at this show.
* Shawn Michaels made his WrestleMania debut at WrestleMania V as part of the popular tag team "The Rockers."
* Celebrities present included Morton Downey Jr., who was a guest on Piper's Pit, and Run DMC, who performed a special "WrestleMania rap."
* This show featured legendary Horsemen Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard's only WrestleMania match.
* During a bodyslam in the tag team match between the Buschwackers and the Fabulous Rougeaus, one of the Buschwackers grabs the crotch of Ray Rougeau. Often wrestlers will play practical jokes on each other while in the ring, perhaps explaining the motive for this.
* More seats were added to the Trump Plaza to increase the attendance from the prior WrestleMania, also held in the Trump Plaza.
* The WrestleMania IV ring aprons from the previous year were reused here with the "I" in "IV" ripped off.
* The Ultimate Warrior nearly seriously injured Bobby Heenan when he gorilla pressed him. Warrior did not bother to drop Heenan safely, but rather, let him simply crash to the mat. Heenan made reference to the incident on the WWE produced DVD The Self-Destruction of the Ultimate Warrior.
* Hulk Hogan defeated Randy Savage to become WWF Champion in the main event of WrestleMania V – the first of three times Hogan would win the title at a WrestleMania. At WrestleMania VII, he defeated Sgt. Slaughter for the title, and at WrestleMania IX, Hogan beat Yokozuna.
* The ending to the Warrior/Rude match was considered an unclean finish. And back then it was surprising to see, unlike today when unclean finishes happen at nearly every match.
Wrestlemania 6
WrestleMania VI was the sixth pay-per-view event, and the first WrestleMania to be held outside of the U.S. Its venue was the SkyDome (now Rogers Centre) in Toronto, Canada, on April 1, 1990. Attendance was 67,678. It is considered by some to be the end of the pro wrestling boom of the 1980's, as Hulk Hogan, without a doubt the main reason for the boom, "passed the torch" to the Ultimate Warrior in the main event. Afterwards, the WWF started to have a decline in popularity that wouldn't stop until Stone Cold Steve Austin ushered in the Attitude Era in 1998.
WrestleMania VI was subtitled The Ultimate Challenge, which was also the name given to the main event between Hulk Hogan and The Ultimate Warrior, who were the two most popular wrestlers in the WWF at the time. The match was for both the WWF Championship (which was held by Hogan), and the Intercontinental Championship (which was held by Warrior), and was billed as "Champion Vs. Champion, Title For Title".
* A teenage Adam Copeland (better known today as Edge) appeared at Wrestlemania VI as part of the audience, cheering for Hulk Hogan. He sat 12th row ringside and proudly wore a "Hulk Rules" T Shirt. 12 years later, at WWF WrestleMania X8, he would be at The Skydome wrestling Booker T in a match. Incidentally, Hogan also wrestled at WrestleMania X8.
* Diamond Dallas Page drove the Pink Cadilac to the ring as a part of the entrance for the Honky Tonk man (whom performed his song "Honka-Honka Honky Love". 12 years later, he would be at WWF WrestleMania X8 defending the WWF European Championship against Christian.
* Demolition won the WWF Tag Team championship for the 3rd time, thus becoming the second Tag Team in history to win the championship 3 times. The record would stand solid until 1998 when The New Age Outlaws won the WWF Tag Team Championship four times that year.
* WWF WrestleMania VI was the first WWF WrestleMania event to be held outside of the United States. Most of the WWF Pay Per Views are held within the boarderline of America.
* Referee Earl Hebner uncharacteristically wore a long-sleeved referee shirt during the main event. Hebner had previously been the only WWF referee to wear a short-sleeved shirt. (in fact, he can be seen with a short-sleeve shirt during the Savage/Rhodes match.)
* Was the first of three WWF WrestleMania events to feature a main event where the challengers were both faces (or fan favorites). The other two are WWF WrestleMania XII (Bret Hart vs Shawn Michaels) and WrestleMania X-Seven (Stone Cold Steve Austin Vs The Rock).
* Both WrestleMania VI and WrestleMania X8 would see Hulk Hogan lose in the Skydome (he lost to The Rock and The Ultimate Warrior). The two events also featured a winner in the main event whom walked away with two championship belts (The Ultimate Warrior walked away as The WWF Champion and The WWF Intercontinental Champion, and Triple H walked away as the WWF Undisputed Champion, holding both the WWF Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship that Chris Jericho united at Vengeance in 2001).
* The Hart Foundation hold an unbroken record in WrestleMania history when they defeated The Bolsheviks in 19 seconds. Bret Hart, of course being Canadian, was wildly cheered that night.
* It should be noted that despite their crushing defeat, comedian Steve Allen had a comic sketch with The Bolsheviks earlier that night, even going so far as to call them his favourite "Soviet tag team." He also stated that he would play the Soviet national anthem on his piano. Unfortunately, the venue for this concert was the men's shower room, and he never performed the anthem, only other tunes mocking said anthem. This infuriated Nikolai Volkoff who had to be restrained by his partner Boris Zhukov.
* WrestleMania VI was the last WrestleMania that Gorilla Monsoon and Jesse Ventura hosted together, as Ventura left the WWF after the event. Monsoon and Ventura had commentated every WrestleMania up until that point (excluding WrestleMania 2, where Monsoon commentated from Chicago and Ventura from Los Angeles).
* Curt Hennig's (Mr. Perfect's) first loss in the WWF happened here.
* Dusty Rhodes only Wrestlemania match was at Wrestlmania 6.
Wrestlemania 7
WrestleMania VII was the seventh annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. It took place at the Los Angeles Sports Arena in Los Angeles, California on March 24, 1991. The subtitle for the event was Superstars And Stripes Forever, and is remembered for its theme of American patriotism (American flags were hung all over the arena and the ring apron and banners were colored red, white, and blue), which was the basis for the main event between Hulk Hogan and Sgt. Slaughter for the WWF Championship. WrestleMania VII is mostly remembered for the emotional reunion between "Macho Man" Randy Savage and his manager, Ms. Elizabeth, which occurred following Savage losing a "Retirement Match" to the Ultimate Warrior.
WrestleMania VII was originally supposed to be held at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Buildup to WrestleMania VII began during the original pay-per-view broadcast of WrestleMania VI on April 1, 1990, with commercials predicting that 100,000 fans would fill up the Coliseum for WrestleMania VII. These commercials ran throughout 1990 and into 1991, but by January 1991, only 16,000 tickets had been sold. With only two months left until the pay-per-view, it was decided to move the event from the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum to the Los Angeles Sports Arena which was right next door. The WWF claimed the reason for the venue change was because a bomb threat had been issued towards the company on the day of WrestleMania VII. The WWF/E has held on to this claim to this very day.
Another story tells of the possibility of an assassination attempt on Sgt. Slaughter due to his Iraqi sympathizer character, as the Gulf War had come to a close only a few weeks prior. The L.A. Sports Arena can only hold about 16,000, so the event was a sellout, although the pay-per-view buyrate was significantly lower than WrestleMania VI's buyrate. Still, the WWF proclaimed WrestleMania VII to be "the most watched pay-per-view of all-time" for a few months following the event.
* This was André the Giant's final WrestleMania appearance.
* This was the first WrestleMania to not feature Jesse Ventura as a color commentator. Gorilla Monsoon hosted the event with Bobby "The Brain" Heenan. When Heenan had to manage at ringside, Monsoon was joined on the commentary by "Hacksaw" Jim Duggan, and later Lord Alfred Hayes. In addition, Regis Philbin helped with commentary on the main event.
* The logo for this WrestleMania was slightly chaged for the event. The alternate logo [1] had a red, white and blue color scheme and it was striaght instead of curved.
* This was the second of three times that Hulk Hogan would win the WWF Championship at a WrestleMania. He would also win it from Randy Savage at WrestleMania V and from Yokozuna at WrestleMania IX
* This was The Undertaker's first WrestleMania appearance.
* Michael Cole claims the main event between Hogan and Slaughter is his favorite WrestleMania match.
* During the opening moments of the Tag Team Championship match with the Hart Foundation and the Nasty Boys, a very young Macaulay Culkin appears in the audience, however, he is not recognized by commentator Gorilla Monsoon.
* Jeopardy! host Alex Trebek served as a guest ring announcer.
* Hercules, Tito Santana, and Hulk Hogan were the only wrestlers from the Los Angeles-held part of WrestleMania 2 to return to L.A. for WrestleMania VII. At WM 2, Hercules lost to Ricky Steamboat, Santana and The Junkyard Dog lost to Terry and Hoss Funk, and Hogan beat King Kong Bundy in a steel cage match to retain the WWE Championship.
* Both Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker returned to Los Angeles for WrestleMania 21. There, Michaels would lose to Kurt Angle, and The Undertaker continued his WrestleMania winning streak, beating Randy Orton.
* The third WrestleMania (after WrestleMania I and WrestleMania IV) to feature a title match with a count out or disqualification ending. Like WrestleMania IV, it was the Intercontinetnal champion (Mr. Perfect) losing by disqualification to retain his title on a technicality. He became the third man to retain the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania despite losing the match.
Wrestlemania 8
WrestleMania VIII was held at the Hoosier Dome in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 5, 1992. Country singer Reba McEntire performed "The Star-Spangled Banner" at the beginning of the show. Family Feud's Ray Combs also made an appearance before the 8-man tag match. The event was commentated by Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
* This is the first WrestleMania to use the generic "WrestleMania ring apron skirt" and "rafter banner." They would be subsequently used until WrestleMania 13. (However, there were only three ring apron skirts prepared in time, leaving the one on the blind-side of the "hard" (fixed) camera just black. This is visible when The Undertaker tombstones Jake Roberts on the floor.)
* Sid Eudy wrestled in two WrestleManias in his career, WrestleMania 8 and WrestleMania 13. He was in the main event of both shows, although under different names (Sid Justice and Sycho Sid). He also appeared at WrestleMania XI, but in a non-wrestling role.
* This was Shawn Michaels' and Bret Hart's first singles Wrestlemania match. The two would main-event WrestleMania XII four years later.
* The finish to the Justice-Hogan match actually did not occur as planned since Papa Shango missed his cue to come to the ring and break up Hogan's pinfall of Justice. Sid inadvertently became the first man to kick out of Hogan's legdrop - a rare occasion by any standard. Play-by-play man Gorilla Monsoon announced that Justice was disqualified because Papa Shango interfered, but the bell rang before Shango came out. WWF Magazine stated that Justice was disqualified because of his manager, Harvey Whippleman, though Harvey did nothing aside from standing up on the apron. Hogan seized him and referee Earl Hebner rang the bell.
* Two of the matches from this show (the WWF and Intercontinental title matches) were widely listed on 'Best of 1992' lists by wrestling pundits.
* This featured the WrestleMania debut of Skinner, Tatanka, Sid Justice, and Ric Flair.
* It was widely rumored that the main event of this show was scheduled to be Ric Flair vs. Hulk Hogan in a WWF Title "dream match" which had been built up for months. Supposedly the plan was changed when news broke of Hogan's departure, or perhaps because of an unwillingness on Hogan's part to lose to Flair (though the fact that Flair lost the title to Randy Savage anyway puts this in question). A Flair-Hogan main event was initially announced on WWF television, but only by way of planting the seeds for Sid Justice's heel turn which led to the eventual Hogan-Justice main event.
* This was the first WrestleMania where the WWF Champion or the Title was not featured in the main event. The championship match was billed as half of a "double main event," but it was slotted in the middle of the card.
* This was the second WrestleMania where Randy Savage won the WWF Championship, and the last.
* The singles title matches also share something that was highly taboo in the WWF at the time: the appearance of blood in the contest. Speculation was that Bret Hart was able to convince the backstage crew that he had been accidentally "busted open," but Ric Flair was unfortunately caught blading directly on camera and was fined several thousand dollars.
* This was the last WrestleMania to feature Gorilla Monsoon as a commentator.
* One of the officials at ringside during the Randy Savage/Ric Flair match was Shane McMahon.
* This would be Jake "The Snake" Roberts' last WWF appearance in four years.
* The second consecutive WrestleMania (and fourth overall) to feature a title match ending in a count out or disqualification. In this instance, Money Inc. retained their tag titles by being counted out.
Wrestlemania 9
WrestleMania IX was the ninth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. It took place at Caesar's Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada on April 4, 1993. The event was attended by 15,045 people. The commentators for the event were Jim Ross, "Macho Man" Randy Savage and Bobby "The Brain" Heenan.
WrestleMania IX was built around two main storylines: the unstoppable Yokozuna challenging Bret Hart for the WWF Championship; a right he earned by winning the 1993 Royal Rumble, the first man to win a WrestleMania title shot at the Royal Rumble (although, Hulk Hogan had won the 1991 Royal Rumble and went onto face Sgt. Slaughter at WrestleMania VII, his title shot was not granted because of his victory); and the return of Hulk Hogan, who had departed the WWF following WrestleMania VIII, teaming up with Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, to take on the WWF World Tag Team Champions, Money Inc. (Ted Dibiase and Irwin R. Shyster).
In the years following the event, WrestleMania IX began to garner a bad rap. Many blame the lack of any real "WrestleMania-caliber" matches on the card, while others cite Hulk Hogan's surprise winning of the WWF Championship as a major detriment to the event. However, others consider WrestleMania IX to be full of interesting plot twists and intriguing commentary courtesy of Ross, Savage and Heenan.
WrestleMania IX also took a novel approach to its arena by placing it outside in the open air at the risk of possible rain and other weather related incidents. The open-air arena idea would later reappear in WWE's annual holiday Tribute to the Troops shows in 2003.
* At the event, Hulk Hogan appeared with a swollen eye. It has been speculated it was actually caused by Randy Savage the night before the event after the two had heated words concerning Savage's ex-wife Elizabeth Hulette. Other sources claim that it was due to a jet ski incident. The official reasoning given on the pay-per-view was that Ted DiBiase had hired men to attack Hogan the previous night.
* This was the only WrestleMania held outdoors.
* Jim Ross made his WWF debut at this event.
* This was the first Wrestlemania event that featured two WWF Championship matches, the second match being unadvertised.
* This show features the shortest WrestleMania main event of all time.
* This was the first show where a heel won a WWF World Championship. This would also occur at WrestleMania 2000, and WrestleMania X-Seven.
* This Wrestlemania is widely remembered as having the shortest WWF Championship Title reign in history. Yokozuna won the title, then lost it mere minutes later to Hulk Hogan.
* WrestleMania IX had an ancient Roman theme which led to such events as ring announcer Howard Finkel being nicknamed "Finkus Maximus" and Jim Ross dressing in a toga. Royal Rumble 2006 would also have a similar theme based on ancient Rome.
* Shawn Michaels was able to return to the ring quicker than a ten count in the closing moments of the match; a mistake. To improvise, Michaels tripped referee Joey Marella and dragged him outside the ring to warrant a disqualification instead. However, Howard Finkel still mistakenly announces Tatanka victorious via a countout.
* This was the first WrestleMania not to feature an American in the main event, at least in terms of kayfabe. Bret Hart, a Canadian both in kayfabe and reality, took on Yokozuna, billed from Japan. (However, Rodney Anoai, the wrestler who portrayed Yokozuna, was actually a Samoan American from San Francisco.)
* This was the only WrestleMania to feature either of The Steiner Brothers. They went back to WCW in 1994. After he came back to WWE in 2003, Scott was injured when WrestleMania XIX and WrestleMania XX took place.
* This was the first WrestleMania to be inducted into Wrestlecrap, because a majority of the matches were too short and there were too many storyline twists.
* The arena for WrestleMania IX appeared on the game WWE SmackDown! vs. RAW 2006 as a hidden arena.
* This was the only WrestleMania where "Macho Man" Randy Savage was featured on commentary.
* This was the first WrestleMania not to feature Gorilla Monsoon as the primary play-by-play announcer.
* Legendary early 80's superstar Bob Backlund made his WrestleMania debut here.
* There is speculation that Hulk Hogan had blackmailed Vince McMahon to change the outcome of the main event and have him capture the title in an impromptu match with Yokozuna. McMahon agreed, but only if Hogan would drop the title at the SummerSlam 1993 back to Bret Hart. This never happened though, as Hogan dropped the title back to Yokozuna at the WWF King of the Ring PPV instead believing Hart not to be in his league and then left for WCW the next year. In compensation, the WWF booked Hart to win the King Of The Ring tournament.
* This was Hulk Hogan's final WrestleMania appearance for 9 years. (His next WrestleMania appearance would be at WrestleMania X8 where he went one-on-one with The Rock)
* This was Giant Gonzales first and only Wrestlemania.
* This is the first and so far the only WrestleMania where The Undertaker won via disqualification, and also the first WrestleMania where he did not win using his tombstone piledriver.
* The third consecutive (and fifth overall) WrestleMania to have a title match end in a disqualification or count out. Shawn Michaels became the fourth man to retain the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania despite losing the match (the second person to do so by count out, following Greg Valentine - The Honky Tonk Man and Mr. Perfect both retained by disqualification). Money Inc. had their match end without a pinfall or submission for the second consecutive WrestleMania - however, their opponents were the ones disqualified at this event.
Wrestlemania 10
WrestleMania X was the tenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. It took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 20, 1994. The event was attended by 18,065 people. It was the first WrestleMania not to feature Hulk Hogan, and the last to feature Randy Savage. Little Richard was on hand to sing "America the Beautiful" with a gospel choir to open the festivities. The commentators for the event were Vince McMahon and Jerry "The King" Lawler.
* The Intercontinental title match was the first ladder match shown on a WWF pay-per-view.
* If one watches carefully, it is obvious that Little Richard is lip-synching "America the Beautiful" during the opening ceremony.
* The ladder match and the Bret Hart vs. Owen Hart match are widely regarded as two of the best matches of the decade.
* Bret and Owen Hart originally planned to put on a match akin to the Randy Savage/Ricky Steamboat match from WrestleMania III (with numerous pinfall attempts and reverses), however, when they attempted to put on a match of that kind at house shows, audiences did not respond as well as they may have hoped. To combat this, they went to their father, Stu Hart, for guidance and put together the basic match outline mere hours before WrestleMania X began.
* This was only the second-of-three Wrestlemania event to be held in Madison Square Garden. MSG also hosted WrestleMania XX and the first WrestleMania.
* One rumor that persists regarding the booking plans for this show are that Lex Luger was originally scheduled to win the WWF title here, but jeopardized his prize by rather loudly mentioning the news in a New York City bar in front of a notable New York Daily News gossip columnist. Upon hearing of this, or so the story goes, Vince McMahon immediately changed the plan to the rather embarrassing disqualification finish for Luger. It is true, however, that Luger would never again have the drawing power he did before this show.
* This is the final WrestleMania appearance of referee Joey Marella, who died on July 4, 1994 in a car accident.
* This is the final WrestleMania appearance of the "classic referee" attire (button-up shirts and bow-ties). The standard striped shirt variant would be featured from WrestleMania XI to present. (Although, beginning with WrestleMania XIX, due to the WWE Brand Extension the SmackDown! variant of the referee's shirt began to appear as well.)
* This was the first WrestleMania not to feature The Undertaker since his WWF debut.
* This was Yokozuna's first televised loss since WrestleMania IX.
* This was the first Wrestlemania to not feature Hulk Hogan.
* This was the first and only Wrestlemania where the WWF Championship was advertised as being defended twice due to a coin-toss. The title was defended twice at the previous year's WrestleMania IX, but the second of the two title matches was unadvertised.
* This was the final WrestleMania appearance of Randy Savage who went to WCW shortly after.
* A 10-man tag match was arranged for this event featuring the 1-2-3 Kid, Sparky Plugg, Tatanka and The Smoking Gunns vs. Irwin R. Schyster, Jeff Jarrett, Rick Martel and The Headshrinkers, however due to the ladder match running longer than expected the match had to be postponed until the following episode of RAW where I.R.S. pinned The 1-2-3 Kid for the victory. This was explained on-screen by a backstage scene where the latter team couldn't agree who would be team captain. The contest was eventually held on Monday Night RAW.
* Two competitors at WrestleMania X also competed at the inaugural WrestleMania, which was also held in Madison Square Garden: Doink the Clown, under his real name Matt Borne, lost to Ricky Steamboat. Leilani Kai also competed at WM I, losing the WWF Women's Championship to Wendi Richter.
* Shawn Michaels would be the only competitor from WrestleMania X to return to Madison Square Garden for WrestleMania XX. There, he and Triple H lost a Triple Threat match to Chris Benoit for Triple H's World Heavyweight Championship.
* Despite creating the event and being a regular WWF commentator for the previous ten years, this was the first full WrestleMania that Vince McMahon commentated on. He had previously commentated on the New York portion of WrestleMania 2.
* Jerry "The King" Lawler made his return to the World Wrestling Federation at WrestleMania X. Lawler had been absent since November 1993 due to a charge of raping a young girl in Memphis, Tennessee (Lawler had been substituted by Shawn Michaels at the Survivor Series the previous year.)
* Bret Hart says in Wrestling With Shadows that it was the idea of Randy Savage to have all the good guys in the locker room to come out, congratulate and celebrate Bret Hart's WWF title win (as pictured above).
* The fourth consecutive WrestleMania (and sixth overall) to feature a title match ending in a count out or disqualification - the second in a row to have two title bouts end in a count out or disqualification. It was the third time for the tag titles, but the first (and only) time for a WWF title match to end via DQ at WrestleMania.
Wrestlemania 11
Wrestlemania XI, was the eleventh annual WrestleMania pay-per-view event held by World Wrestling Entertainment (then known as the World Wrestling Federation) in Hartford, Connecticut on April 2, 1995. The event was covered by most major U.S. media outlets due to the involvement of NFL linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The event was commentated by Vince McMahon and Jerry "The King" Lawler.
* This is the second time The Undertaker won a WrestleMania match without using his Tombstone Piledriver and also the first time he pinned his opponent without using the latter.
* This is the first WrestleMania featuring the striped referee shirts. All previous WrestleMania events had the referees wearing button-up shirts and bow-ties. This is also the only WrestleMania appearance of the long-sleeved striped referee shirt (and one if it's rare appearances. It has not been used since 1995, save for Jesse Ventura's role as guest referee at SummerSlam 1999).
* This was the first WrestleMania where the WWF Championship was not the closing match on the show since WrestleMania VIII.
* This is the first WWF pay-per-view to use the "WWF New Generation" logo as the logo at the bottom of the screen.
* Due to a production foul-up, one of the WrestleMania ring aprons did not get shipped to the Hartford Civic Center. As a result, the standard blue "WWF logo" ring apron had to be used on the blind-side of the camera. (It is visible most notably when Shawn Michaels leads Jenny McCarthy around the ring.)
* Bret Hart considers the I Quit Match he had with Bob Backlund to be his worst match ever.
* This is one of two "submissions only" matches at WrestleMania. The other would also feature Bret Hart at WrestleMania 13 against "Stone Cold" Steve Austin.
* This is the second consecutive WrestleMania that featured "Rowdy" Roddy Piper as the guest referee for a Bret Hart match. (At WrestleMania X, Piper was the guest referee for Hart's WWF Championship Match against Yokozuna.)
* WrestleMania XI was the first WrestleMania where former co-holders of the WWF Tag Team Championship (Shawn Michaels and Diesel) faced each other for the WWF Heavyweight title. This would happen again at WrestleMania XIV when Steve Austin and Shawn Michaels squared off as well as the Fatal Fourway at WrestleMania 2000 which featured The Rock and Mick Foley. This would also happen at WrestleMania 21 when Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio faced each other, although they were the reigning WWE (Smackdown!) Tag Team Champions at the time.
* This was Scott Hall's last match at WrestleMania using the name Razor Ramon. He returned at WrestleMania X8 in a match against Stone Cold Steve Austin.
* Ironically enough, this was the first and only appearance of Steve McMichael at WrestleMania. A year later, McMichael would join rival WCW.
* Diesel was the first champion to retain the World Championship at a WrestleMania since Hulk Hogan beat André the Giant at WrestleMania III.
* The fifth consecutive WrestleMania (and seventh overall) to have a title match end in a count out or disqualification. Jeff Jarrett became the fifth man to retain the Intercontinental title at WrestleMania despite losing the match (following Greg Valentine, The Honky Tonk Man, Mr. Perfect, and Shawn Michaels).
Wrestlemania 12
WrestleMania XII was the twelfth WrestleMania event promoted by World Wrestling Entertainment (then known as the World Wrestling Federation). It was held in Anaheim, California, on March 31, 1996. It was commentated by Vince McMahon and Jerry "The King" Lawler.
* WrestleMania XII was one of only two WWF televised events in history to have a show logo on the mat canvas of the ring (the other was the Raw Bowl earlier in 1996). It was later cut into segments and sold in pieces.
* This WrestleMania featured only 6 matches on the PPV, making it the WrestleMania with the fewest matches.
* The match between Bret Hart and Shawn Michaels is the longest match in the history of WrestleMania. It's also considered by some to be the greatest WrestleMania match of all time.
* This was Kevin Nash's last match at WrestleMania and also his last Wrestlemania using the name Diesel. He returned and accompanied Scott Hall to ringside at WrestleMania X8 during Hall's match against Stone Cold Steve Austin.
* The Hollywood Backlot Brawl originally was scheduled for Razor Ramon against Goldust for the WWF Intercontinental Title, but the match was changed due to backstage issues with Scott Hall (Ramon) signing a contract with WCW. Hall would return at next month's "In Your House" Pay-Per-View and do "the job" to Vader on his way out.
* This was the first time The Undertaker won using the Tombstone Piledriver since Wrestlemania VIII.
* This was Rowdy Roddy Piper's first Wrestlemania match since Wrestlemania VIII and would also turn out to be his last. He later returned at WrestleMania XIX when he interfered in the Street Fight between Hulk Hogan and Vince McMahon. He also returned at Wrestlemania 21 to host Piper's Pit with special guest Stone Cold Steve Austin.
* The Nacho Man and Huckster were parodies of "Macho Man" Randy Savage, and Hulk Hogan after they left for WCW. Others were "Scheme Gene" and "Billionaire Ted".
* This was the Ultimate Warrior's first WrestleMania appearance in four years, his first WWF match in nearly four years, and his last WrestleMania appearance overall.
* This was Triple H and Stone Cold Steve Austin's first WrestleMania appearance.
* According to Triple H, this was his worst WrestleMania ever.
* Portions of the Hollywood Backlot Brawl used stock footage of the LAPD Freeway Chase involving O. J. Simpson.
* It is rumored that prior to the Ultimate Warrior's return, Warrior insisted that he defeat Triple H in minutes and even kick out of his finisher. WWF Management butted-heads with the Warrior until Triple H surprisingly accepted and allowed Warrior to destroy him in mere minutes at the show.
* This was Shawn Michaels' second WrestleMania main-event. His first was at WrestleMania XI against Diesel for the WWF Championship Although the Wrestlemania XI Main Event match was followed by Bam Bam Bigalow vs. Lawrence Taylor.
* After Shawn Michaels title victory, it was claimed by several sources that Michaels told referee Earl Hebner to kick his manager, Jose Lothario, and Bret Hart out of the ring so he could have his "moment." Bret Hart later claimed in his 2005 DVD that Shawn actually told Bret to "Get the f*** out of my ring- it's my moment."
* This was the last WrestleMania appearance for Ted Dibiase, the late Yokozuna, and Jake Roberts.
* Triple H is the only competitor from WM XII to return to the Arrowhead Pond for WrestleMania 2000. There, he would retain his WWE Championship in a Fatal Four Way match against The Rock, The Big Show, and Mick Foley.
* This was also the debut of Sable, who acted as Triple H's valet.
* The WrestleMania XII logo is a play on the 20th Century Fox logo.
* The WWF Intercontinental Championship was not defended at WM XII, marking the first time the belt was not defended at Wrestlemania. Reigning champion Goldust was defeated by Rowdy Roddy Piper in a non-title Hollywood Backlot Brawl.
* The only WrestleMania with just one title bout on pay-per-view.
* This WrestleMania ended a WrestleMania streak of title matches ending in a DQ or count-out. The streak went for five WrestleMania shows (VII through XI). However, it is worth noting that only one title was defended on the Pay-Per-View and it ended in a draw before sudden death overtime was ordered.
Wrestlemania 13
WrestleMania 13 (also known as WrestleMania XIII) was the thirteenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. The event was held on March 23, 1997, with an attendance of 18,197 in the Rosemont Horizon (now Allstate Arena) in Rosemont, Illinois (one of the sites of WrestleMania 2, and the site for Wrestlemania 22). The commentators for the event were Vince McMahon, Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler. Shawn Michaels was the guest commentator for the main event.
* The submission match at WrestleMania 13 produced a "double-turn", as Bret Hart turned heel and Stone Cold Steve Austin turned face in the same match. Bret's heel turn ended a nine-year stretch of being a face, which began at WrestleMania IV. The match was widely considered as the match of the night and one of the best of 1997. One of four WWF/E matches to ever get 5 stars by Wrestling Observers Dave Meltzer.
* This is the second WrestleMania to use Arabic numerals.
* WrestleMania 13 would be Bret Hart's final WrestleMania appearance as a wrestler.
* Mick Foley and The Rock both made their WrestleMania debuts at WrestleMania 13.
* This was the last WrestleMania to feature Vince McMahon on play by play.
* Originally the main event for WrestleMania 13 was to be Bret Hart vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWF Championship. Had the match taken place, Michaels would have dropped the WWF Championship to Hart (as a way to return the favor for Hart dropping the title to Michaels at WrestleMania XII). However, Michaels refused to drop the belt and ended up forfeiting the title on a special broadcast of Thursday RAW Thursday, with Michaels giving his, now infamous, "losing my smile" speech. Contradicting this, Michaels claims in his autobiography that he truly was injured after tweaking his previously injured knee and was told by Dr. James Andrews that he would never wrestle again, forcing him to drop the title and rehab intensivly in an attempt to strengthen his knee.
* Due to this change of plans, Bret Hart won the title for one day in February 1997, and then lost it to Sid which lead to the Undertaker/Sid Main Event.
* There is a long standing rumor that before the finish of the main event (Undertaker's winning Tombstone), Sid defecated himself.
* Both The British Bulldog and Bret Hart are the only competitors at WM 13 to have also competed at the part of WrestleMania 2 held at the Rosemont Horizon. There, the Bulldog and The Dynamite Kid beat Brutus Beefcake and Greg Valentine for the World Tag-Team Championship. Also, Hart was the last competitor eliminated from a 20 man over-the-top battle royal, won by Andre the Giant.
* Justin Bradshaw, Hunter Hearst Helmsley, Mankind, and The Undertaker will return to the Chicago area for WrestleMania 22 at the Allstate Arena. There, Bradshaw (now known as "John Bradshaw Layfield") will challenge Chris Benoit for the WWE United States Championship, Helmsley (now called "Triple H"), will fight John Cena for the WWE Championship, Mankind (in his "Cactus Jack" persona) will fight Edge in a hardcore match, and The Undertaker will fight Mark Henry in a casket match.
* This was the last Wrestlemania to have red, white, and blue ring ropes. WrestleMania XIV would begin using three red ropes.
* So far this was the Undertaker's only Wrestlemania match where he has won a title. Others he has simply just won in non title matches.
* The eigth WrestleMania to have a title match end in a count-out or disqualification, the fourth time it happened in a tag title match.
Wrestlemania 14
WrestleMania XIV was the fourteenth WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation, which took place on March 29, 1998 at the FleetCenter in Boston, Massachusetts. The event was commentated by Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler. The tagline for WrestleMania XIV was D-X raided.
The pay-per-view event was mostly remembered for the start of the first WWF Championship reign for Stone Cold Steve Austin. His victory in the Main Event against Shawn Michaels is often cited as the "official" beginning of the Attitude era.
* WrestleMania XIV had triple the PPV buyrate of WrestleMania 13.
* This event was the first of Pete Rose's three consecutive WrestleMania appearances. Rose has since been inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame based on those appearances.
* The main event was Shawn Michaels' last match for over four years. He would return at SummerSlam 2002.
* This was the second time in WrestleMania history that the Main Event was headlined by former World Tag Team Champions. Austin and Michaels held the tag titles for a brief period over the summer of 1997. The first time was between Diesel and Shawn Michaels at WrestleMania XI.
* Referee Earl Hebner had suffered an aneurysm shortly before the event and was hospitalized for weeks. Vince McMahon had ordered his hospital room wired so that he could watch WrestleMania XIV during his convalescence. Shawn Michaels also speaks directly to the camera shortly before heading out to the ring saying "This is for you, Earl!"
* There had been numerous backstage reports that Shawn Michaels refused to drop the WWF Championship to Stone Cold Steve Austin and wanted to keep it. Reportedly, The Undertaker was backstage nearby Triple H and Chyna and threatened to legitimately beat Michaels down if he didn't drop the belt. Reportedly Taker stated "If he doesn't drop the belt, I'm dropping him." Michaels has long since denied this story, but dropped the belt as planned.
* For the second year on a row, The Rock went in and out of WrestleMania as the Intercontinental Champion.
* The Triple H vs. Owen Hart match was the first European Championship match in WrestleMania history.
* This was the only WrestleMania that featured a Dumpster Match.
* The TAKA Michinoku vs. Aguila match was also the first (and only) Light Heavyweight Championship match in WrestleMania history.
* WrestleMania XIV held the first match between The Undertaker and Kane in WWF history. They would have many more memorable matches, including their Inferno match at Unforgiven 1998 and their WrestleMania rematch at WrestleMania XX.
* By defeating Kane, The Undertaker extended his WrestleMania undefeated streak to 7-0.
* WrestleMania XIV would be the last WrestleMania appearance for the classic version of Legion of Doom.
* WrestleMania XIV was Terry Funk's second WrestleMania appearance, his first was at WrestleMania 2 in 1986.
* WrestleMania XIV was the first WWF show where The Rock said his now famous catchphrase "Smell what the Rock is cookin'?" during an interview with Gennifer Flowers. He looked at Gennifer and said "If you smell what I'm cooking" It would morph into his famous catch phrase from there.
* The referees that Ken Shamrock suplexed after his match were not real referees, but rather, local indy wrestlers in referee outfits. After SummerSlam 1997 (in which Shamrock did the same thing), it was decided not to put the real referees in danger like that again.
* WrestleMania XIV was both the last WrestleMania to use the classic WWF New Generation logo and the first WrestleMania to make use of the scratch WWF logo, which was used on the microphones and the officials' t-shirts (on the 2005 WrestleMania: The Complete Anthology DVD set, all the WWF scratch logos were been blurred or edited into the WWE logo).
* The DX Band made an appearance performing D-Generation X's theme "Break It Down" during Triple H and Shawn Michaels' entrances.
* Shawn Michaels did not sell a punch from Mike Tyson. After the main event had ended, Michaels was "knocked out by Tyson." A camera zoomed in on Michaels' face to see him smiling and smirking at the camera.
* The ninth WrestleMania (and second in a row) to feature a title match ending in a count-out or disqualification. The Rock is the sixth Intercontinental champion to end a match under these circumstances, but is the first to have been declared the winner.
* Wrestlemania XIV was the first and only one that the Road Dogg & "Bad Ass" Billy Gunn would compete on the same team as The New Age Outlaws.
Wrestlemania 15
WrestleMania XV was the fifteenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. The event was held in the First Union Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 28, 1999. The tagline for WrestleMania XV was The Ragin' Climax. Michael Cole and Jerry "The King" Lawler provided commentary during the event.
* Steve Austin won the WWF Championship from The Rock, making him the first man to win the title at two consecutive WrestleMania events.
* The Hardcore Championship match at WrestleMania XV was the first match with the Hardcore Title on the line in WM history.
* Earl Hebner had no idea that Steve Austin would call him back into the ring to help him celebrate. Just before Austin goes to leave, he quickly dashes back into the ring and tugs on Earl's shirt, inviting him back in.
* This was the first Wrestlemania booked by Vince Russo and Ed Ferrera.
* WrestleMania XV marked the final WrestleMania appearances for Gorilla Monsoon and Owen Hart; both of whom would ultimately pass away in 1999.
* This is The Big Show's first Wrestlemania appearance.
* The judges for the Brawl for All included Gorilla Monsoon, Chuck Wepner, and Kevin Rooney. The match was refereed by "The Pazmanian Devil" Vinnie Pazienza.
* The Brawl for All was the first (and only) shoot match in the history of WrestleMania.
* This was the first WrestleMania where The Undertaker did not compete in a normal match.
* This was The Undertaker's last WrestleMania as "The Phenom" until this gimmick returned at WrestleMania XX. He was injured during the fall of 1999 and he appeared under his biker gimmick from WrestleMania X-Seven up to WrestleMania XIX.
* This was the first WrestleMania to have a Hell in a Cell match.
* The match between Triple H and Kane, as of 2005, is the last WrestleMania match to end in a disqualification.
* Michael Cole was advertising WWF products during this pay-per-view on one of its commercials between matches. He mentioned merchandise of both The Rock and the "New Champion" (Steve Austin) before the match even took place. It is unclear if this was edited out from later VHS and DVD releases, since this was heard during the live feed when at the time of the event took place.
* This was Jeff Jarrett's last WrestleMania as he left for WCW later in the year.
* This WrestleMania's logo was the last to feature the classic font used since the event's inception in 1985. However, the font would later be used again for the logo of WrestleMania 22.
* This was the last WrestleMania to feature red ring ropes. Every WrestleMania since then has used black ring ropes.
Wrestlemania 16
WrestleMania 2000 (also known as WrestleMania XVI) was the sixteenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. The event was held at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California on April 2, 2000, and had an attendance of 18,742. Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler provided commentary.
* This was the second WrestleMania to be held at the Arrowhead Pond in Anaheim, California. The first one was WrestleMania XII.
* There were no standard one-on-one matches with normal rules in the event.
* Kurt Angle lost both his championships despite not being pinned or made to submit either fall.
* Triple H became the third man (following Hulk Hogan and Diesel) and the first heel to retain the WWF Title in the main event of WrestleMania. He would duplicate this feat at WrestleMania XIX. In all previous main events the heel lost his title, a face successfully defended his title, or the title was not up for grabs.
* This was the second WrestleMania not to feature Undertaker since his debut.
* The first WrestleMania logo to not make use of the classic font used in past WrestleManias (1 - XV) and also the first and only WrestleMania logo to use the font Neo Sans.
* Mick Foley's dream of being in the main event of WrestleMania was realized at WrestleMania 2000. Previously, the closest he had gotten to this point was being guest referee for the main event at WrestleMania XV.
* This is the only WrestleMania to be generally referred to by year, rather than a number.
* In the Triangle Ladder match for the WWF Tag Team Championship, Edge, Christian, Bubba Ray Dudley, D-Von Dudley, Matt Hardy and Jeff Hardy all made their WrestleMania debuts on this event. After that match, it was then noticed as one of the best ladder matches that was ever seen on WrestleMania. This match was the unofficial first, and also gave birth to the infamous TLC match.
* Kurt Angle, Chris Benoit, Chris Jericho, & Eddie Guerrero all made their first Wrestlemania appearances.
* To help promote this WrestleMania, its main eventers (HHH, The Rock, Big Show and Mick Foley) all appeared on Saturday Night Live.
* Gangrel was supposed to be in the hardcore battle royal but couldn't due to injury.
* The three competers in the European, and Intercontinental title matches all went on to face Shawn Michaels in three consecutive WrestleManias. Chris Jericho faced Michaels at WrestleMania XIX, Chris Benoit faced him in a Triple Threat match at WrestleMania XX (with Triple H), and Kurt Angle faced him at WrestleMania 21.
* Triple H is the only competitor from WrestleMania XII to return to the Arrowhead Pond for WrestleMania 2000. At WM 12, HHH lost a squash match to the returning Ultimate Warrior.
* Celebrities that appeared at the event included Ice-T, Martin Short, Michael Clarke Duncan, Pete Rose, Dustin Diamond & French Stewart
* This was the first Wrestlemania not to feature Stone Cold Steve Austin since his debut
Wrestlemania 17
WrestleMania X-Seven was the seventeenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from the World Wrestling Federation. The event took place on April 1, 2001 at the Reliant Astrodome in Houston, Texas. The commentators for this event were Jim Ross and Paul Heyman.
It is considered by many to be one of the greatest WrestleManias of all time. WrestleMania X-Seven is the highest grossing professional wrestling pay-per-view ever with an estimated 3.0 buyrate (or 1,000,000 viewers). Some fans have cited WrestleMania X-Seven as the end of the Attitude Era for the WWF and the peak of the professional wrestling boom of the late 1990s, as ratings and attendance started declining following the pay-per-view. Professional wrestling's popularity in mainstream pop culture also took a deep nose-dive following WrestleMania X-Seven, some believe due to Stone Cold Steve Austin, one of the most popular wrestlers of all time, turning heel and aligning himself with archrival Vince McMahon, the man who Austin feuded with during the late 90's wrestling boom. Also The Rock's move into movies is also a reason often given to wrestling's fall in popularity at this point, plus the decision to keep Triple H heel and align him with Steve Austin despite their history of fighting each other. Another plausable reason is that the WWF wasn't catering enough for former WCW and ECW fans, and that without any major competition the WWF began to put on less high calibre shows.
The theme song for the event was "My Way" by Limp Bizkit, which is notable for being played often in the weeks leading up to the event. WrestleMania X-Seven was subtitled Houston...We Have A Problem, but it was never mentioned on WWF television. However, the subtitle was shown on the pay-per-view posters and in the DVD and VHS cover art.
* The Intercontinental Championship was the only championship of 6 to be successfully retained. All other championship belts changed hands.
* The Light Heavyweight Championship was the only championship to not be defended at the event. However at the Sunday Night Show preceding WrestleMania, reigning Light-Heavyweight Champion Crash Holly, successfully defended the title against Sho Funaki.
* Stone Cold Steve Austin's WWF Championship victory made him only the second man to win the WWF title at WrestleMania three times. The other one is Hulk Hogan.
* This was the first Wrestlemania where a babyface turned heel during the main event.
* The only WrestleMania up to date to be in Houston, TX.
* Third time in a row that The Rock was in the WrestleMania main event (WrestleMania XV, WrestleMania 2000). He lost all three matches.
* The second time that the main event for the World Wrestling Federation Championship belt featured The Rock and "Stone Cold" Steve Austin (they met each other previously at WrestleMania XV in 1999. The Rock lost then and lost here in this WrestleMania. A third match between the two would happen at WrestleMania XIX with Rock claiming the victory.
* Featured an appearance by Motörhead who would play Triple H's theme music as he walked down the ramp to the ring. Motörhead would appear again at WrestleMania 21 to sing Triple H's theme music yet again.
* This was the first Wrestlemania since the folding of the other two big-brand wrestling companies; WCW and ECW, with WCW closing merely a week earlier and ECW closing about three months earlier.
* Former WCW superstars were present at WrestleMania X-Seven and were in support of Shane McMahon during his match with Vince McMahon.
* The Undertaker boosted his record to 9-0 after the defeat of Triple H.
* Was Chyna's last WrestleMania appearance.
* William Regal battled Chris Jericho for the Intercontinental Championship in the opening match of WrestleMania X-Seven as the challenger. William Regal would later appear in the opening match of WrestleMania X8 as the Intercontinental Champion to defend his championship against Rob Van Dam. He would lose both of these contests.
* In 2001, three matches of the top 10 matches that fans voted as the best of the year came from WrestleMania X-Seven. They were: Undertaker vs. Triple H at #9, Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock at #3 and TLC II at #2.
* With his WWF Championship victory, Stone Cold Steve Austin has a 3-0 main event record at WrestleMania.
* This is Jerry Lawler's first absence in a Wrestlemania event to commentate since his debut.
* This event holds the record for most title changes at a single WrestleMania with 5 title changes (this excludes the multiple times the Hardcore title changed hands at WrestleMania 2000 or WrestleMania X8). The WWF World Heavyweight, Tag-Team, Women's, European and Hardcore titles all changed hands at this event.
* During the TLC II match, Rhyno helped Christian up the ladder using his head and back. At WrestleMania 21 during the Money in the Bank Ladder Match, Tyson Tomko helped Christian up the ladder in a similar manner.
* During Eddie Guerrero's match with Test, Eddie attempted to throw Test over the top rope, but Test's leg accidentally got caught between the top and second ropes. Eddie had no choice but to try and help the referee free Test from the ropes.
* With his victory over The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin became a 5-time WWF Champion. At that time, it tied him with Bret Hart and Hulk Hogan for the second most WWF Championship reigns (with The Rock holding the belt 6 times, as of the date of the event).
* This was the first WrestleMania logo to make use of the font Bodega Sans (used from X-Seven to 21).
* The 67,925 fans at the Reliant Astrodome established a new all-time record for that facility.
* Bobby "The Brain" Heenan called his first Wrestlemania Match in 8 years alongside "Mean" Gene Okerlund.
* This marked the second and final appearance of the Gobbly Gooker at a WWE show.
* The Iron Sheik won the Gimmick Battle Royal at WrestleMania X-Seven, marking his first WrestleMania win in nearly 15 years.
* This was the Undertaker's first WrestleMania appearance since WrestleMania XV and also his first WrestleMania under his biker gimmick. This was also the third time that he won without using his Tombstone Piledriver. It's also so far, the first and only WrestleMania that he won using his Last Ride finisher.
* Spike Dudley, and Rhyno made their WrestleMania debuts while interfering on behalf of the Dudleyz and Edge and Christian in the TLC Match. Lita also appeared in the TLC match to show support for the Hardy Boyz. It was the only TLC which each team had someone interfere in the match.
* During their match, Steve Austin put The Rock in the Million Dollar Dream, a hold he hadn't used since 1996 when he wrestled aganist Bret Hart at Survivor Series. Ironically, The Rock bounced off the turnbuckle and managed to counter the Million Dollar dream into a pinning predictament; a move Bret Hart used to defeat Steve Austin at Survivor Series of that year.
* There were many references to the Submission Match of WrestleMania 13 during the main event of WrestleMania X-Seven- the most obvious was The Rock trapping Steve Austin in the Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring. Austin was a bloody mess as he struggled for the ropes- an incident that mirrored the moment where Bret Hart trapped Austin in the Sharpshooter in the middle of the ring and Austin was a bloody mess.
* This was the first WrestleMania whose title included a combination of a Roman numeral and a number being spelled out (rather than using purely Roman or Arabic numerals). Wrestlemania X8 would use a similar combination.
* This is the first of two WrestleManias to feature Limp Bizkit themes twice in the same event (With My Way as the main theme of WrestleMania X-Seven and Rollin being the entrance theme of The Undertaker). WrestleMania XIX would feature the same thing also- with Crack Addict being the main theme and Rollin being the entrance theme of the Undertaker once more. However, this time, Limp Bizkit were there in person and performed the songs live.
* Many people credit WrestleMania X-Seven as the end of the Attitude Era for the World Wrestling Federation, mainly because of Stone Cold Steve Austin's unexpected and utterly confusing heel turn.
Wrestlemania 18
WrestleMania X8 was the eighteenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event and the final WrestleMania to be promoted by the World Wrestling Federation. (WrestleMania XIX would be the first WrestleMania under the new re-named World Wrestling Entertainment.) It took place at the SkyDome (now known as the Rogers Centre) in Toronto, Ontario on March 17, 2002. The event was commentated by Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler.
The themes for this event were "Tear Away" by Drowning Pool and "Superstar" by Saliva.
* This was Hulk Hogan's first WrestleMania in 9 years and his 10th appearance.
* This was Ric Flair's first WrestleMania event in 10 years, and 2nd appearance.
* This was Kevin Nash's first WrestleMania in 6 years and his 4th appearance.
* This was Scott Hall's first WrestleMania in 7 years and his 4th appearance.
* This was the first time Triple H wrestled as a face for a world title at Wrestlemania.
* WrestleMania X8 broke WrestleMania VI's attendance record which took place at the same stadium.
* This would be the last WrestleMania to use the WWF initials and logo as the World Wrestling Federation would change to World Wrestling Entertainment as a way of avoiding the constant court battles with the World Wildlife Fund which now makes full use of the initials "WWF."
* This is the only WrestleMania to feature the WWF Undisputed Championship. Conversely, it is the last WrestleMania before the WWE Brand Extension.
* This is the second WrestleMania event to be held at the Toronto SkyDome (the first being WrestleMania VI). Ironically, both events featured Hulk Hogan, and both times he was the fan favorite (though at X8, it was unplanned), he fought a younger and equally (if not more) popular wrestler, he lost his match, and he befriended his opponent after the match ended. Hulk Hogan's match also made him the only wrestler to compete at both Toronto WrestleManias, though Diamond Dallas Page also appeared at the prior one as the driver of The Honky Tonk Man's pink cadillac.
* This is the last WrestleMania appearances of Kevin Nash and Scott Hall to date.
* For the second year in a row, William Regal opened WrestleMania with an Intercontinental Championship match and he lost both.
* The Undertaker defeated Ric Flair at WrestleMania X8, taking his undefeated WrestleMania record to 10-0. The Tombstone that Ric Flair took actually proved to be real, in which lead to Flair suffering minor headaches. Ric Flair's taking on the Tombstone, however was voted as one of the best takings in WWE, followed by The Rock's takings on the Stone Cold Stunner.
* The fan that Ric Flair attacked during the angle leading to the match as well as the video package before the match is actually Paul London.
* The Legendary Arn Anderson made his second Wrestlemania appearance here, interfiering in the Flair/Taker contest, attacking Undertaker and saving his best friend Ric Flair. This was a throwback to the legendary Four Horsemen stable of the 1980s NWA, led by Ric Flair containing Arn Anderson, Ole Anderson, and Tully Blanchard.
* WrestleMania X8 was the second WrestleMania at the SkyDome for Edge and Diamond Dallas Page; Edge was in attendance at WrestleMania VI, and Page drove the car that brought the Honky Tonk Man and Greg Valentine to their performance at that same WrestleMania.
* The first three matches in this WrestleMania were for the Intercontinental, European, and Hardcore Titles. To this date, this was the last time any of these belts were defended at WrestleMania since they were all deactivated later in the year. The IC Title, however, was brought back in 2003 two months after WrestleMania XIX. Even though the Intercontinental Champion has participated in matches at WrestleMania XX and 21, the title was not on the line. (Randy Orton in WM XX participated in a Handicap 3-on-2 Match and Shelton Benjamin in WM 21 was in the "Money In the Bank" Ladder Match)
* Both Drowning Pool and Saliva attended the event. As well as performing their respective themes for WrestleMania X8, "Tear Away" and "Superstar", Saliva also performed "Turn the Tables" for the Dudley Boyz' entrance and Drowning Pool performed their rendition of "The Game" for Triple H's entrance.
* WrestleMania X8 was held on Test's birthday.
* This was the first WrestleMania that Hulk Hogan wrestled as a heel. All the other times he participated as a babyface.
* This was the last WrestleMania that used a combination of Roman and Arabic numerals in its title.
* This was Booker T's first Wrestlemania
* This was the first time Edge won via Pinfall.
* The Rock won his match using 3 Rock Bottoms in the course of his match. He would do the same thing against Stone Cold at Wrestlemania XIX.
Wrestlemania 19
WrestleMania XIX was the nineteenth annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from World Wrestling Entertainment. It took place at Safeco Field in Seattle, Washington on March 30, 2003. The commentators for the RAW brand were Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler. The SmackDown! commentators were Michael Cole and Tazz.
The theme song to this event was "Crack Addict" by Limp Bizkit. They also performed live, singing the theme song, as well as "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)" during The Undertaker's entrance. R & B artist Ashanti sang "America the Beautiful" at the beginning of the show.
* This was the third time The Rock and Stone Cold Steve Austin have faced each other at WrestleMania, and the first time The Rock won. This was also Stone Cold's last WrestleMania match to date and his final match as an active competitor.
* Rock versus Steve Austin at Wrestlemania XIX was their only encounter not to include interference or a championship.
* This event was not only Brock Lesnar's first WrestleMania main event, but his first WrestleMania match as well. Also having their first WrestleMania matches were Rey Mysterio, Victoria, Shelton Benjamin, Charlie Haas and Chavo Guerrero.
* The Sunday Night HEAT match was originally supposed to take place on the actual pay-per-view, but was pushed to the free pre-show due to timing conflicts. This was a controversial move, as Kane and Rob Van Dam were and are considered two of the company's most popular stars.
* Kurt Angle had been diagnosed with a heavily injured neck before the show and many thought that if a mistake were made in the ring, Kurt may wind up paralyzed. During their match, Brock Lesnar was extra-careful with the injured Kurt. Many told Kurt not to wrestle, but Kurt insisted on putting on a show in the Main Event. After the match, Kurt Angle was hospitalized and spent the next three months out of action. Ironically enough, Angle returned in July and recaptured the WWE Championship from Brock Lesnar in a Triple Threat Match.
* The night before the show, Stone Cold Steve Austin was hospitalized due to nerve problems and it was thought he may not be able to compete.
* This was the first and (only Wrestlemania to date) that has had a feature documentary filmed live and shown the following year. The documentary was named "The Mania of Wrestlemania"
* This was Rhyno's first and only WrestleMania match to date.
* Triple H broke his record for retaining a World Championship twice as a heel. The first time this happened was three years prior, at WrestleMania 2000.
* This was the first time the World Heavyweight Championship and WWE Championship were defended on the same WrestleMania card. This was also the first and only time to date that the World Heavyweight Champion retained his title.
* WrestleMania XIX was the second time that Vince McMahon has competed in a WrestleMania match (the first being WrestleMania X-Seven). Ironically, both of his WM matches were Street Fights and he lost both of them.
* The WWE Tag Team Championship and WWE Cruiserweight Championship were defended for the first time at this event.
* WrestleMania XIX set the Safeco Field attendance record at 54,097.
* This was the first WrestleMania to use WWE's initials and logo after the lawsuit from the World Wildlife Fund the previous year.
* WrestleMania XIX marked Limp Bizkit's second affiliation with WWE and ultimately WrestleMania having provided the theme songs for both WrestleMania XIX and WrestleMania X-Seven.
* Ashanti sang "America the Beautiful" before WrestleMania XIX began.
* This was the first WrestleMania match for Shawn Michaels since he came out of retirement.
* This was the first time at a WrestleMania that The Undertaker did not compete in a singles match. Instead he fought in his first WM handicap match.
* Before the event began, John Cena came out with cardboard cut outs of Jay-Z and Fabolous and rapped about the two, mocking and embarrassing the two, due to the fact that they refused to accept his challenge for a battle rap.
* The Undertaker's match was originally supposed to be a tag team match pitting him and Nathan Jones against A-Train and Big Show. However, disappointment in Jones' matches prior to the event lead to his removal from the WrestleMania event. The kayfabe reason was the Full Blooded Italians along with Big Show and A-Train attacked him along after luring him into an ambush. He did do a run-in during the match itself, however.
* This was the third straight WrestleMania to be held in a stadium.
* Brock Lesnar received a concussion during his match with Kurt Angle after a botched Shooting star press which resulted in Lesnar landing on his face. This incident is responsible for the term 'to Brock'.
* Three wrestlers had to defeat their opponents at WrestleMania XIX by hitting their finishers three times for the pinfall. Hulk Hogan gave Vince McMahon three Leg drops, The Rock gave Stone Cold Steve Austin three Rock Bottoms while Brock Lesnar gave Kurt Angle three F-5s.
* This was Matt Hardy's fourth consecutive WrestleMania match.
* Chris Jericho says his favorite WrestleMania match was his match at WrestleMania XIX.
Wrestlemania 20
WrestleMania XX was the twentieth WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from World Wrestling Entertainment, which took place on Sunday, March 14, 2004 in New York City at the world-famous Madison Square Garden. The tagline for WrestleMania XX was Where It All Begins...Again.
In celebration of the 20th incarnation of the event, WWE returned to the city and arena where the first WrestleMania took place.
The buildup to WrestleMania XX began almost immediately following the previous year's WrestleMania XIX. Billed as The Road to WrestleMania XX, advertising for the 20th WrestleMania ran often during WWE shows and PPV events. The WrestleMania XX logo appeared on all WWE licensed shirts, DVDs, and pay-per-view posters with the tagline The Celebration You Can't Miss! appearing underneath the logo. A website was set up in September 2003 counting down the days until WrestleMania XX. The theme song to this event was "Step Up" by Drowning Pool while the song for the recap video was "Touche" by Godsmack.
WrestleMania XX was a joint-promotion PPV event, featuring wrestlers from both the RAW and SmackDown! brands. In fact, this was the first WrestleMania to feature cross-promotional matches, in which wrestlers from both brands fought each other. The RAW commentators for the event were Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler. The SmackDown! commentators were Michael Cole and Tazz.
* This was the third time Madison Square Garden hosted the event (1 & X were the others).
* To date, this is the only 5-Hour Wrestlemania broadcast.
* This was the first Wrestlemania to charge $49.95
* This was the first time the WWE United States Championship was defended at a WrestleMania.
* This was the first time the World Heavyweight Championship was defended in the main event and also the first time that any World Title changed hands by submission in the main event.
* This was the first WrestleMania to have Triple Threat Match for a World Championship.
* Eddie Guerrero's win marked just the seventh time a World Champion successfully defended his championship at WrestleMania, the first two being Hulk Hogan, followed by Yokozuna (though he would lose it in a later match that night), Diesel and twice by Triple H.
* The handicap match was The Rock's last WrestleMania appearance and last match to date.
* Their underwhelming match was Goldberg's last match to date and Brock Lesnar's last match to date in the WWE.
* The Undertaker's undefeated WrestleMania streak became 12-0 after pinning Kane in their second WrestleMania encounter (first being XIV). Kane lost both times. Incidentally, the first time it took 3 "Tombstone Piledrivers" while this time it only took one to finish off Kane.
* Randy Orton, John Cena, Batista, Rene Dupree, Rob Conway, Mark Jindrak, Garrison Cade, Goldberg, Ultimo Dragon, Shannon Moore, Nunzio, Jamie Noble, Billy Kidman and Akio all made their in-ring WrestleMania debuts.
* This was the first WrestleMania to feature RAW vs. SmackDown! matches since being split into two brands.
* This WrestleMania has the most title defenses, with 7 (United States, Women's, Cruiserweight, WWE Tag Team, World Tag Team, WWE and World Heavyweight titles). The Intercontinental Title was the only title not defended on this WrestleMania since Intercontinental Champion Randy Orton competed in the handicap match.
* This was the first time that The Tag Team Titles from both brands are defended in one night and at a Wrestlemania and also at a fatal four way tag team match.
* For the first time ever, Mick Foley and The Rock teamed up at WrestleMania.
* This was Kane's first WrestleMania without his mask
* The main event was given the Match of the Year 2004 award by Pro Wrestling Illustrated.
* This is the first WrestleMania to have a main event end by submission.
* This was the first time Shawn Michaels was in the main event since Wrestlemania 14 against Steve Austin
* The only wrestler at WM XX that competed at WrestleMania X, also held in Madison Square Garden, was Shawn Michaels, who lost the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Razor Ramon in a ladder match at WrestleMania X.
Wrestlemania 21
WrestleMania 21 was the twenty-first annual WrestleMania professional wrestling pay-per-view event from World Wrestling Entertainment. This event took place on April 3, 2005 in Los Angeles, California at the Staples Center. This was the first WrestleMania at the Staples Center, but the fifth in the Los Angeles/Anaheim metropolitan area (following 2, VII, XII and 2000).
The theme song to this WrestleMania was "Bigtime" by The Soundtrack Of Our Lives. The finishing recap video was played to "Behind Those Eyes" by Three Doors Down.
WWE claimed that tickets were sold out in less than one minute for this event, which would be a record for the fastest selling WrestleMania ever. The subtitle for this WrestleMania was "WrestleMania Goes Hollywood." The commentators for RAW were Jim Ross and Jerry "The King" Lawler. The commentators for SmackDown! were Michael Cole and Tazz. The spanish commentators were Carlos Cabrera and Hugo Savinovich.
* WrestleMania 21 marked the first time the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship both changed hands on the same night in standard singles matches and at a WrestleMania.
* The name of the theme song for WrestleMania 21, Bigtime, is also the name of the theme song for WrestleMania 22, however it is spelled "Big Time" and is performed Peter Gabriel.
* Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker were the only two competitors from WrestleMania VII to return to Los Angeles to compete at WrestleMania 21.
* This marked the first time Stone Cold Steve Austin appeared at a WrestleMania without having any involvement in match. It is his 9th overall appearance at a WrestleMania.
* This is the third WrestleMania to use Arabic numerals instead of Roman numerals (the previous two being WrestleMania 2 and WrestleMania 13).
* The official logo for WrestleMania 21 appears to be the last logo using the font Bodega Sans (used from X-Seven to 21) as the new logo for WrestleMania 22 features the classic font used in past WrestleManias (1 - XV).
* WWE claimed that tickets for WrestleMania 21 sold out in less than one minute. However, this claim remains to be proven factual since fans that were waiting in line outside the Staples Center on September 25, 2004 say that tickets for this event had actually sold out in a little less than one hour.
* This WrestleMania holds the Staples Center's attendance record with a crowd of 20,193.
* This would be Eddie Guerrero's final Wrestlemania appearance before he would untimely pass away on November 13, 2005. He had previously appeared at WrestleMania 2000, WrestleMania X-Seven, WrestleMania XIX, and WrestleMania XX before he would be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame Class of 2006.
* This would be the final WrestleMania appearance for long-time WWE referee Earl Hebner, who was fired on July 18, 2005.
* The Undertaker improves his perfect win-streak to 13-0.
* WrestleMania 21 marked the first WrestleMania to not feature The Rock since WrestleMania XII in 1996. He made his debut during WrestleMania 13 and appeared every year consecutively until WrestleMania XX, currently his last WrestleMania appearance.
* Hulk Hogan's appearance marked his first since WrestleMania XIX in 2003, and his 12th overall appearance at the annual event.
* Christy Hemme is the only superstar to make her televised WrestleMania in-ring debut.
* The 100 dollar bills that were dropped during JBL's enterance had a picture of Bradshaw on both sides with the title "In John Bradshaw Layfield We Trust" and "For promotional use only, not real tender".
* This is the first Piper's Pit segment at a WrestleMania since WrestleMania V.
* The lead-up to Hulk Hogan's induction to the WWE Hall of Fame and segment with Eugene, Hassan and Daivari was featured in an episode of Hogan Knows Best titled WrestleMania.
* During the Money in the Bank match, Tyson Tomko carried Christian up the ladder on his shoulders in the electric chair position. Ultimately, Kane attacked Tomko, leaving Christian on the ladder. At WrestleMania X-Seven during the TLC II Match, Rhyno helped Christian up the ladder in a similar manner.
* John Cena won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21 after winning the WWE United States Championship in the opening match at WrestleMania XX a year earlier. Conversely, Eddie Guerrero participated in the opening match at WrestleMania 21 after defending the WWE Championship at WrestleMania XX. Also, Chris Benoit participated in the second match of WrestleMania 21 after winning the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania XX.
* This was the first time that WWE Tag Team Champions would face each other in a single's match at a Wrestlemania event.
* This was the third consecutive year that the Intercontinental Championship was not defended. In fact, the Intercontinental Championship, the United States Championship, the Cruiserweight Championship, nor either the World or WWE Tag Team Championships were defended.
* This was the first WrestleMania to feature a match involving ladders since WrestleMania X-Seven, when a Tables, Ladders, and Chairs Match was held.
* WrestleMania 21 was the first WrestleMania event not to feature a tag-team match and the first since WrestleMania III to not feature a tag team title match.
* This event marked the second time in a row that Triple H lost the World Heavyweight Championship at a WrestleMania event.
* This event marked the fifth time that Triple H was played to the ring by a live band. He was played to the ring live at WrestleMania XIV and SummerSlam 1998 by Chris Warren and The DX Band. Motörhead performed at WrestleMania X-Seven, and Drowning Pool the following year at WrestleMania X8. Triple H lost both matches in which Motörhead played his music.
* Celebrity guests for WrestleMania 21 included former WCW Champion David Arquette, Motörhead, Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top, The Black Eyed Peas, Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins, Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ice Cube, Carmen Electra, Sylvester Stallone, Marg Helgenberger from CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, and former MADtv cast member Will Sasso.
* WrestleMania 21 marks the fourth consecutive time that Triple H headline WrestleMania in a World Championship match, beating the previous record of Hulk Hogan's three time.
Wrestlemania 23
* Soul legend Aretha Franklin performed "America the Beautiful" at the start of the event, reprising her role from twenty years earlier at WrestleMania III.
* Ron Simmons, Slick, The Fabulous Moolah, Mae Young, Ricky Steamboat, Jimmy Hart, Irwin R. Schyster, Dusty Rhodes, Sgt. Slaughter, Howard Finkel, Gene Okerlund, Pat Patterson and Gerald Brisco appeared backstage dancing with Eugene, Cryme Tyme and Extreme Exposé (Kelly Kelly, Brooke Adams and Layla El).
* Celebrity guests in attendance for WrestleMania 23 included: Franklin, Trump and Miss USA 2006 Tara Conner (for the Hair vs. Hair match), Miss USA 2007 Rachel Smith, Miss USA 2000 Lynnette Cole, Miss Universe 2006 Zuleyka Rivera, members of the Detroit Tigers, Thomas Hearns, and Detroit Red Wings goaltender Dominik Hašek.
* Cena is the second man in history to retain the WWE Championship at back-to-back WrestleManias. Hulk Hogan was the first, retaining the Championship at Wrestlemania 2 and III. Cena, as well as being undefeated at WrestleMania, is the first to win the WWE Championship match three years in a row.
* This was the second year in a row that Cena main evented WrestleMania, and both times he won with the STFU. It is also the second year in a row that the World Heavyweight Championship has changed hands, but not the WWE Championship.
* This was the fourth year in a row that the World Heavyweight Championship has changed hands.
* This is the 5th consecutive WrestleMania without an Intercontinental Championship match, 4th with the championship being active.
* With this WrestleMania win, The Undertaker is the only superstar to win both the WWE Championship and the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania.
* This was the first WrestleMania to use all white ring ropes.
* Had Triple H not been inactive due to injury, he would have tied Bret Hart's record of twelve consecutive WrestleMania appearances.
* This is the first time Edge has lost a Wrestlemania.
* This was the second time in a row in Wrestlemania in which the Royal Rumble winner was not on the Main Event (Batista Vs. Undertaker).
Wrestlemania 24
* Wrestlemania 24 was only the 2nd Wrestlemania to be held outdoors (following Wrestlemania 9).
* It was the first Wrestlemania held in the state of Florida.
* WWE set a Citrus Bowl attendance record of 74,635 fans.
* Kane vs. Chavo Guerrero set the record the shortest match in Wrestlemania history. Wrestlemania was also the highest-grossing event in the history of the venue.
* Wrestlemania 24 consisted of people from 21 countries, all 50 states, and five Canadian provinces. It ended up pumping an estimated $51.5 million, surpassing the projected $25 million, into the local economy and generated $1.8 million in local tax revenue.
* After the show, WWE was criticized for a malfunction in the pyrotechnics during The Undertaker's victory celebration. During the celebration, a hot cable for pyrotechnics was sent flying into audience members in the upper seating bowl of the stadium, leaving 45 injured with some hospitalized. The accident was apparently due to a cable which fireworks were traveling across snapping, thus resulting in the fireworks exploding into the top rows of the upper bowl of the stadium.

* The only wrestler at WM XX that competed at WrestleMania X, also held in Madison Square Garden, was Shawn Michaels, who lost the WWE Intercontinental Championship to Razor Ramon in a ladder match at WrestleMania X.

The accident was apparently due to a cable which fireworks were traveling across snapping, thus resulting in the fireworks exploding into the top rows of the upper bowl of the stadium.
