WWE: Sci-Fi Network to become the new home for ECW; WWE vs ECW special to air live in the UK

The Wrestling Observer is this evening reporting that The Sci-Fi Network is preparing to announce that they will be the home of ECW’s weekly TV show when the ECW brand launches early next month. A press release is believed to be prepared and will be released after it is given the final “OK” from either Vince or Linda McMahon.

Next month’s ECW vs WWE special that airs on Wednesday, June 7 will air in the United Kingdom live at 1am on Sky Sports, with One Night Stand also being shown live on Sky Sports 1 the following Sunday (June 11) at 1am local time. The scheduling means that fans in the UK get to see both shows on “free” TV (Sky Sports is subject to a monthly subscription) rather than having to pay to watch on PPV.

BSkyB are yet to announce any changes to the schedules for June, but with Velocity being dropped to make way for ECW, it’s likely the weekly ECW show will air in it’s place on Sky Sports 3.

To date, the following are confirmed has having signed one-year contracts (with a three-year option) with World Wrestling Entertainment to be part of the relaunch of ECW next month:

Terry Funk
Sabu
The Sandman
Francine
Danny Doring
Tony Mamaluke
Jazz
Axl Rotten
Balls Mahoney
C.W. Anderson

Of those currently part of WWE, Rob Van Dam will of course will be a major part of the new ECW brand, as will Joey Styles and Tommy Dreamer (both on-screen and behind the scenes working with Paul Heyman). Chris Benoit and Mick Foley will be involved in some capacity post-One Night Stand, but Benoit is likely to remain on Smackdown! for the most part. Tazz will also be part of the new ECW, but right now it’s not thought he’ll leave his chair at the announce table for Smackdown!, while Al Snow could be used in a bit-part role on ECW’s weekly TV show also.

We understand that WWE have offered contracts to Lance Storm, Masato Tanaka and Tajiri (who will definately be at One Night Stand), while TNA Wrestling’s Rhino could make a sensational return to WWE to be a big part of the new ECW. Rhino’s TNA contract does not have much time left to run on it, and even before the news of ECW returning was common knowledge, there was talk that Rhino would be welcomed back to WWE to be part of either RAW or Smackdown!

We also understand that under Paul Heyman, OVW’s CM Punk is in line to be the first name to receive a major push in ECW to become the first new star created by the brand. The plan during the first few months of ECW launching is to begin to create new stars while using the stars from the old ECW (Sabu, RVD, Funk and Sandman) to help establish the brand with a much larger fanbase that Heyman’s ECW had previously.

There is also talk that several Smackdown! stars will be drafted from Smackdown! to be part of the ECW roster, with Ken Kennedy perhaps being the most high-profile name being discussed. Simon Dean, Psicosis, Nunzio (as Little Guido) and Matt Hardy are other names who have been mentioned, but given the weak state of the Smackdown! roster, whether Vince McMahon will want to take several more wrestlers away from the show remains to be seen.

Team 3-D (fka: The Dudley Boyz) have a contract with TNA till (c.) 2009

The James Gang will probably be in TNA for awhile as well, Billy Gunn (or whatever his name is, Kip James?) has been vocal about his dislike for WWE.

ECW is more profitable than Smackdown..

The ECW PPV got more buys than every Smackdown PPV..

PPVs = Money. .You don't lose money on them.. There getting at least 30 bucks for every person that buys...

30 * 600,000 =

Buyrate for WWE PPVs since January of 2005:

2.46 - Wrestlemania 21 (BOTH)
1.34 - Summerslam 2005 (BOTH)
1.31 - Royal Rumble 2006 (BOTH)
0.94 - Survivor Series 2005 (BOTH)
0.92 - Vengeance 2005 (RAW)
0.83 - Royal Rumble 2005 (BOTH)
0.81 - ECW ONE NIGHT STAND
0.81 - Backlash 2005 (RAW)
0.75 - New Year's Revolution 2006 (RAW)
0.73 - Armageddon 2005 (SD!)
0.68 - New Year's Revolution 2005 (RAW)
0.66 - Judgement Day 2005 (SD!)
0.59 - No Way Out 2005 (SD!)
0.58 - Great American Bash (SD!)
0.56 - Unforgiven 2005 (SD!)
0.55 - Taboo Tuesday 2005 (RAW)
0.55 - No Mercy 2005 (SD!)
0.46 - No Way Out 2006 (SD!)

Around 330,000 people bought the ECW PPV in America for 30 or 35 dollars.. Not counting the people who got it on the web for 15.

330,000 * 30 = nearly $10,000,000 in revenue from one PPV..

Sure, DirecTV and all of them take a percentage, and a fee to get it on, but they definitely make money.

Also, ECW events are cheap as hell in WWE-terms to put on.. They don't have to pay for fireworks, they don't need many camera men, and it's supposed to look low-budgeted from a certain point of view. It will be more profitable then Smackdown is, especially when you consider how much all the DVDs that ECW sells.

The ECW DVDs are WWE's best sellers... They get all of that money.
