question for you folks that hit up the live show more regularly. I haven't been to one since after Absolute Power, but when I did I know he rhymed over his vocals. so...

- does he still do this?
- WHY does he do this? ease? money?
- SHOULD he rhyme over instrumentals?

I've heard a lot of hip hop "purists" who've been to his shows give him criticize him for it. aside from them claiming it's "not hip hop" (I can dig it), it's also opened him up to criticism about his live rapping abilities (not performance ability mind you...Tech's got that on lock). I've seen people question whether it's because he lacks breath control, etc. and so on.

I read a post from someone recently who claimed he lip synched. not the case, of course, but again the fact that he doesn't (or didn't at the time) rhyme over instrumentals opens him up to that criticism if, say, Tech's mic isn't loud enough.

That's a good question. I've noticed this at other live rap shows but not at Tech N9ne. I've seen him 4 times and have not noticed it. Actually at one show his mike was turned down to low and it was much easier to here Kutt and Krizz than it was to hear Tech. I'm sure I would have noticed it them if he still did that.
Or...maybe I'm always too faded by the time Tech comes on. But at that particular show, I was the DD, so I know I was not. Also, that show was at least 6 months before Everready came out.

I think he still rhymes over vocals.. because he'll put the mic down during some parts and his words will still be coming out.. but it allows for emphasis on certain parts of his songs..

but you really can not criticize his breath control. the man is dancing and jumping all over the place, i don't think anyone can do that WHILE flowing as fast as he does..

his live shows are all energy and a great time no matter what

Obviously he can't do the hooks and shit on stage. Some parts of songs rely heavily on effects so he just rhymes over or something, sometimes he doesn't even. Aside from that it's all tech.

Well sure, as far as the chorus goes or ad-ins. It's not uncommon to leave those in at a hip hop show. Since Krizz does so many hooks it shouldn't be a prob though. :)

Part of the critique is that he should be able to put on an energetic stage show w/out having to stop and let the track vocals take over. It may sound "cleaner" the way it is, but live show's aren't supposed to sound exactly like they do in the studio. It's what gives live shows a certain something. It's...i dunno..."organic"? On the fly, "real", "authentic", "raw". I don't think rapping over vocals necessarily takes away from a performance...but rapping WELL over strictly instrumentals could add to the performance.

i think only parts of songs have the vocals included in the background, and it for emphasis. like i'm fairly sure when he does the fast part of It's Alive it is all him and there is nothing behind him... same with Midwest Choppers and This Ring. It's definitely not like some rappers who only actually say every third or fourth word themselves, I've seen concerts like that and it's very obvious when that's the case. Everything Tech can do in a studio vocally he can also do live, that's what makes me appreciate his music so much more, because none of it's bullshit, he can really rap that fast or sing that well.

I've never been to a show where he rapped over his own vocals. It's always been Kutt and Krizz filling in when he takes a breath. They're stage presence is second to none and they know each other really well.
