i remember back in the day there used to be a lot of bay area singles...usually get em for 1 to 3 bucks at the moms and pops...and even some of the major retailers...

this is something i definately think is missing from the bay area game...why is it not done anymore?
are the costs too high?

what yall think?
wanna see some more bay area singles?

Singles are tricky and I don't really think the Bay music scene has a market behind it that justifies putting out retail singles.

The thing with singles is this: The singles that are out and do sell are of songs that are on the radio. Someone hears a hot song on the radio and boom, they hit the store and swoop that shit. It's been said a million times and I really don't even want to hear it again, but Bay artists do not get radio play so it is a waste of money and time for them to press up retail singles and try to get them in stores.

If you're gonna do a single, just make it a promo single with snippets and GIVE IT AWAY. Yeah, you're not gettin' any money from it, but at least you know it's gettin' to the public 'cause you're physically puttin' it in there hand. It's not just sittin' in a store and collectin' dust.

Until the radio flips to actually givin' independents a chance to be heard again, then singles are a waste of money.

exactly...like Jay Tee did with "What's Goin On?" I think consumers are more responsive to a promo cd single than just a flyer or sticker...

Fo sho, you gotta have singles. Not for sale though but to give away for free so that the consumer feels more confident about their purchase of the whole cd.

SICFLOW "Raised off these streets" just released in all WherehouseMusic stores.

well yeah...a single is the best way of promotion...give them two full songs...then a couple of snippets...

i knwo me and all my homies still got the old singles that were put out...and not even a 1/10th of them hit the radio...
but it made me find out about those artists, and usually buy their full length when it dropped...as compared to snippet cd's which i still throw a way to this day without listening too...

I say bring back the singles or EPs...and give some of them single only b-side type of tracks with snippets of the forth coming album.

Look at it this way. You're basically sayin' you used to buy a single from unknown Bay Area artists just to give it a chance. People used to do that with Bay Area albums too. Damn near anyone could come out back in the golden age of the Bay and almost guarantee 3,000 or so sales to start with. Shit is different now though. If singles still worked today, the same would hold true for albums today. But it doesn't. Today, selling 3,000 units is a huge success for most Bay cats and that's a shame. The game has been thrown for a loop. People don't really take chances on buying music anymore.

You may be part of a small minority who do take those chances, but financially, putting out retail singles for that small minority just doesn't add up for most labels.

Man all I gotta say is this...I think doin singles is a GREAT idea...Dont just make a single to get played on commercial radio...There are HELLA college stations that DO support...Plus like other homie said, it gives cats a chance to get accapellas, instrumentals etc...Plus, if we ain't even TRYIN to press up singles, then there's NO chance yer shit will ever see airplay OR club play for that matter...Making CD singles an vinyl I think would be a good move...Just my "DJ" opinion

I feel you Moe. But like I said, you're in the minority. Most people who buy singles only buy the latest one that they heard on the commercial stations.

I think cats got me twisted. I'm all for singles and vinyl like Mark said. They are a great idea for PROMOTION.

I'm not sayin' don't do 'em. I'm sayin' don't charge for 'em. Don't waste time tryin' to get 'em in stores.

"If it's not a promo, it's got to go."

Johnnie Cochran is over here with me right now. He typed that last part.
