i would have to say that most americans seek entertainment. if education was a big concern, why would entertainers make millions of dollars, while teachers make nothing? a good teacher can make a bigger difference in the world than a good entertainer in my opinion.

easy question easy answer "entertainment".

@ D-boy - in contrast to what you said nobody wants a difference they want to feel good. people invest their life savings into their entertainment centers and vehicles. why read a book when i can watch TV listen to the radio play a video game etc. . .oh by the way way should i learn when i can pay someone else to do the learning for me.

this is the american sentiment. the "difference" that america wants is another channel to change to. another website. etc . . .

i find myself in awe of the information age in which people in general dont know SHIT!!!! how ironic. it is rare that i find people that i can shoot the shit with about the issues of today. just yesterday i had a discussion with a superior @ my workplace and she has NO clue about what this war is about. although she just wasted $1500 on a new sony computer with the internet that she uses to find porn and look at disgusting things like rotten.com

learning is a dying artform in america.

It's all about Entertainment. But I do both, I would say I'm more into learning. I read about 2 novels a week, But I don't pay attention to this war bullshit, I don't even care to waste my time keeping up with it. Shit, I don't even watch the news

just look at the news, its all about entertainment not NEWS... the majority of the country is more concerned with being entertained and don't even attempt to seek out whats really going on in the world, thats why people like george bush get elected...

I would have to say entertainment.

BUT I do want to bring up the fact that some forms of entertainment have educational purposes aswell. It's not a clear cut between entertainment and education. There's movies that deal with real situations that educate you about people, then theres political music and stuff like that. So its hard to differentiate between entertainment and education.

I'm in my first year of college at laney community college in oakland, and what ive noticed is the attitude is a lot different then high school. In high school no one gave 2 shits about learning, but once your out and no one forces shit to you a lot of people are eager to learn. People feel a desire to gain knowledge but they also feel a desire to be entertained. I've been all around the country in the last few months and I think right now most people just want to be entertained.

Entertainment...

It seems that most people, (americans), are more concerned with being entertained than being educated.

drankedout has a good point that there isn't always a distinguishable line between entertainment and education. But, first and foremost, the masses want to be entertained. If you can't entertain people while educating them then they would most likely rather be not educated...
But there are always those exceptional people.

good thread... :)

along with everone else...

I feel that M'Erikkklanz generally speaking, enjoy being entertained rather than being educated. Entertainment is a medium used to sedate the masses so that they can ignore the real issues of society and tune out relaity... Instead of watching about how the people in Scottland are cloning this animal and working experiementing with stem cell research, we're at home watching the basketball game... Parents of today dont sit down and read to their kids or buy them educational toys like Trivia, they go to the movies and buy overpriced popcorn and soda only to be disappointed that their $25 was spent on some worthless flick...Instead of reading the Bible or researching the TRUTH for themselves people just tune in to PAX or another relgiously bases station and listen to some pope, precher, or female priest that dances all around the gospel, but instead "informs" people how to trust in the Lord to gain riches...
I have an aunt and uncle who are devout Christians, and they told me long time ago thta televsion was the "Devil BOX" and I believed them. They have aTV but its up in the closet, and they only get it to watch special events like the World series, the news or educational programs that come on PBS....They also read, read, and read and learn as much as possible!
I have atv but it doesnt get any stations, and I am content...I like the net b/c it can be informational or entertaining, kinda like the ess eye dubble see en eee dubble ess, it's a amalgamation of the two, meshed together! :classic:

Yeah I agree that Americans as a whole are more concerned with being entertained then being educated. But I do think that everyone if given the chance has some sort of desire to be educated about something. Like people who are really into movies go around and find out everything they can about directors and the actors. And like a lot of the people here people who are really into music like to find out every piece of info about their favorite artists, I consider both of those forms of education.

XianeX edutainment??? LMAO when did education have to be entertaining?
I dont know if you were referring to me. But if you were I didnt mean that education HAS to be entertaining. It all depends on how you define those words. A lot of people will find a Biology class really boring and not entertaining. But other people in the same class will find it really interesting and entertaining.

If your interested in something you will find it entertaining. It all depends on how you look at it.

^^^^ so what your saying is that its on the individual person to decide whats entertaining or not?

ok lets take "faces of death" for example. im sure MANY people on this board would enjoy watching all of the faces of death over and over......they consider it entertaining yet someone else would either call it "evil" or "repulsive".

why do people want to be entertained?

are the priorities of americans backwards? i see americans placing more emphasis on entertainment than anything else.

its cool to entertain (its not cool to be in black face and thats another topic) but shouldnt you want to EDUCATE yourself about your field?

does "FEAR" play a major role in this? people FEAR education/learning/the unknown so they look to something else?

could it be depression or something like that? like "i just want to feel good"?

at different times in my life i have been entertained by many things. from weed to guns to sex and porn to watching tapes like faces of death over and over again. however with each form of "entertainment" i was able to learn something or come away with more knowledge about ME as a person.

i dont see that with americans.

i have 2 go.

:H:

ps@foe tweezy "CHURCH" is one of THE biggest shows ever!!!! in fact its damn near like a mentsrel show...........

LMAO!!!!!

@HERESY - I know what your saying and I agree that Americans do tend to go for entertainment over education.

But education is entertainment for some people. During High School I hated going to school I would rather go smoke a blunt and watch a movie. But now I go into school with the mindstate that im gonna go learn something im gonna be smarter then I was before school. Right now I would rather go to school then cut and go see a movie (though I would like to smoke a blunt and go to school). See what I'm saying entertainment and education can be together. It just depends on how you interprete the words. IF YOUR PASSIONATE ABOUT A SUBJECT YOU WILL FIND IT ENTERTAINING. thats what im trying to say. I know it's not "entertainment" in the way you were talking about, I just wanted to bring it up.

are the priorities of americans backwards? i see americans placing more emphasis on entertainment than anything else
Yes they are backwards the majority of americans (from what ive seen) dont give 2 shits about education.

Also most people don't educate themselves for the purpose of bieng able to think for themselves, and bieng able to actually gain knowledge. Most americans educate themselves to get into college then to get a job and make lots of money which is good to do, but I dont think that should be the highest priority. I believe that the majority of Americans educate themselves to what is in books and what they have to know to get a grade, they dont educate themselves for what I believe to be the right reasons.

"edutainment??? LMAO when did education have to be entertaining?"

I didn't read everything but this kind of stuck out to me. It's true education doesn't have to be entertaining and to many people it's not......but I would have to say that to me personally often education is my entertainment. When I first read the thread title the thing that really struck me is the sad state we are in when the two terms have to be mutually exclusive. Why is learning not entertaining to so many Americans (or maybe just people in general)? Maybe that's the question that should be asked.

<-- entertained by education. some people find it hard to learn and others are scared of being smart. but the fact is this: some MAY talk shit about you being smart when youre young, BUT they will have their hand out one day when your intelligence pays you.

really its as simple as this. find something interesting about what youre learning and try to apply it to your everday life. if what you learn doesnt change you for the better stop learning it :)

I just got educated in things other than school. ^^^^ Thats true for many tho.

ENTERTAINERS are ENTREPENEURS to an extent. Thats why they make so much more than teachers. EVERYONE BUYS THEIR CD's. Weather you are an educator or not, chances are you OWN A CD PLAYER AND LIKE POPULAR MUSIC.

I FEEL more POOR PEOPLE would rather be entertained, for reasons mainly already mentioned.
