I'm expanding my horizons a little, so please forgive my ignorance. Do the compilations put out by Funkmaster Flex, DJ Clue, DJ Kayslay, Hi-Tek, Tony Touch, etc. contain all new songs or are they just mixtapes of previously released songs? Also, who else puts out good compilations on the East Coast?

The DJ Clue albums were real albums. But mixtapes are mixtapes - there are all kinds of tracks on them. As far as originality of the material - when you have a limited number of well established DJs who do this it is expected that the material on their mixtapes will be of much higher quality and it will have exclusives on them. Now, when you have wannabe DJs dropping tapes literally every day or two, just for the sake of dropping as many of them as possible, like these:

it is a completely dfferent story

Yeah, that's what I figured. I looked at the tracklistings and didn't recognize any of the songs. Usually, DJs who use previously released songs use the ones that are on the radio and I did not see too many, if any, radio songs on the tracklistings. So I went ahead and purchased them.

Typically a lil of both. most Elite DJ's like Kayslay and Clue have the means and connects to get exclusives(if u talkin bout the 90's albums they had then most of them are exclusive). But also if your buying it in the album section or lets say over 7.99 then its official and prolly registered, if its in a jewel and less than 10.00 then you takin your chances. With my mixtapes i focus on a subject for the mixtape and actually "mixing" it. u have alot of DJ's ruining it for others. Ive been called an Eastcoast DJ for my style but others who really put time in their craft and work are Demolition Men, The Mixtape Mobb and DJ Fresh to name a few.
