2 part question.

How do you all feel about "diss tracks"?

I think it's a dying breed in the world of "Hip Hop". I don't give a shit what the next man's opinion is on his rival. That's just speaking on the mainstream cats...

As far as, lesser (to unknown) artist.

Does anybody really care to listen to a "diss track" when you don't even know who, or what the fuck the rapper is talking about?

I lean more to the side where both underground and mainstream are too busy trying to outshine their rival...and failing to make good music.

Speak on it...

Battling is not the same as a diss track, at least I don't think so. A diss track is a song that the rapper took time to write/produce/master, and a battle is just two dudes going off the top at eachother.

Battling is tight as fuck and is a foundation to the entire world of Hip Hop, but I wouldn't complain if rappers stopped doing diss tracks...

Rap beefs are weak, I look at it as a gimmick to sell records.
I can agree with that. I mean, I believe that the first "diss tracks" were legit (old school, back in the day shit). I also believe the 2Pac and Biggie shit went too far and a few beefs that have went down since.

As far as it being a gimmick to sell records...now a days: definite. That's what I mean by it being a dying breed.

Yes, it's been happening since day one in "Hip Hop", but I think we've entered a new age, where there are more rappers than there are actual fans. The Game is so saturated now a days, theres unknown rappers dissing each other and yet, nobodys even heard of them.

If your on a level of a Eminem or a 50 Cent, shit...at least you have actual fan base and are being heard.

...but if your a local rapper (where ever your from) and your rapping about "Joe Shmoe" down the street. I think your wasting your time and should focus on making good music and quit getting sucked back into the hole your trying to get out from.

since 50 cent, yes, but before that, nah.....I used to hella look forward to diss tracks.....shit like "the Bitch In Yoo", "King of the Hill" "doughboy killer", "2nd round knockout", "ripper strikes back", "hit em up".....and thats only the late 90s.....shit, I remember hearing hit em up for the first time when I was down in LA in my cousin's car like "DAAAAAAAAMN!!!!" I wasn't a big pac fan, but I kept saying "play that shit again!"

i think diss tracks are kinda pointless on albums.. i dunno...

if you are gonna diss someone on your own track, i think you should just battle the dude face to face instead of write a whole 32 wit a buncha diss. IMO

Yea I agree with that, no name rappers making diss tracks is pointless. There's a better way to get your name out there, for example, make good music.

Yea there was some slappin diss tracks back before 2000. Hit em up is a classic no doubt thats a real diss, that old ice cube track clownin cypress hill is a classic too. Rappers who are tryin to really make fun of other rappers in tracks nowadays need to go back to the 90s and study how to do it.
