pretty sure everyone here is gonna suggest Nikon..
Depends on what your tryna spend...
Its hard to answer these kinda questions, because the people that ask them dont ever put a price range...
You think your ready to spend some real dough on a camera, but you dont figure theres $50,000 dollar cameras out there... lol My Suggestion: Nikon D60 or D80, they have a D60 combo pack on sale at costco right now, its a real good deal, good for beginners.
(I'm a beginner) lol
Google it.

being a canon guy ill suggest the new xsi that came out recently..or the xti or 30d if u can find one..nikon is koo too; go 2 the store n test both out n see what you like better.
I agree those are great cameras to start off with and they'll last a long time plus they come with the new 18-55mm with image stabilization. Nice to know there's another Canon guy in here...LOL!

If you're trying to spend less than a G, then you can get a pretty good camera with some accessories...for less than a G. Just go on craigslist or ebay. You can probably catch a Nikon D40 or D70 for like 450 on craigslist with a lens and all. D40 with 18-55mm lens go for about $499 retail. I caught a D100 for 450. If u have about 400-600 dollars to spend, then you can get a good camera.
