Los Angeles events
Mehserle’s trial was moved to Los Angeles after the judge and defense lawyer agreed that Oaklanders’ outrage and demands for justice could prevent Mehserle’s acquittal. In other words, they think they can outrun the truth.

This Friday, Jan. 8, LA activists say, “We’re gonna show them that the people demand justice!” After all, Los Angeles is the only city in the country where outrage at police terrorism and subsequent acquittal has ever erupted into a full blown rebellion – or riot. That was in 1992 after the police beating of Rodney King, which, like the execution of Oscar Grant, was caught on video, horrifying people around the world.

The community of Los Angeles will stand together in solidarity with the Oakland community saying enough is enough! It’s time for accountability in the justice system!

Organized by the Los Angeles Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant, the protest prior to Mehserle’s initial LA hearing on Friday, Jan. 8, will begin at 7 a.m. in front of the Clara Shortridge Foltz Criminal Justice Center, 210 West Temple St., Los Angeles, followed by the hearing on the Ninth Floor in Department 104.

The LA Coalition for Justice for Oscar Grant is a nonexclusive group of community organizations expressing concern for Oscar Grant’s case. The coalition also acknowledges a need to address the bigger framework which contributed to the circumstances of his death.

Our sisters and brothers in Oakland are still out there marching. Oscar’s family and supporters are coming to LA from Oakland for this hearing. If you can offer anything to help them cover transportation costs, housing etc., email the Oscar Grant Trial Committee at [email protected].

In preparation for this Friday, the coalition is meeting to solidify the details on Wednesday, Jan. 6, 5 p.m., at Chuco’s Justice Center, 1137 E. Redondo Boulevard at the corner of West Boulevard, Inglewood. Everyone who demands justice is welcome.

We are all Oscar Grant! We demand justice!
