ELK GROVE, CA - A 19-year-old student has died after crashing his car into a tree early Sunday morning, according to officials.

Elk Grove Police Department spokesman Chris Trim said the teen crashed his Chrysler PT Cruiser shortly after 1:30 a.m. at Shana Way and Whitelock Parkway. He sustained major injuries and was rushed to a local hospital where he died five hours later, said Trim. No one else was in the vehicle at the time of accident.

LaShonne Joe, the man's aunt, told News10 his name was Braeshaun Jackson, a recent graduate of Laguna Creek High School and current student at Sacramento City College. He had just turned 19 in September and was an active member and youth leader at his local church, Center of Praise.

Joe said Jackson had just dropped off a friend and was about two blocks away from home when he fell asleep at the wheel and crashed.

Joe warns other young people to use this fatal tragedy as a reminder not to drive while tired.

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash and Trim said it's too early to determine whether alcohol may have played a factor.

That's not true about needing to be extremely tired. I used to work with a cat that would get a full 8 hours sleep before an 8 hour shift and about 3 hours in he would be in the middle of a conversation and fall asleep at a stop light.

Narcolepsy is a chronic sleep disorder, or dyssomnia. The condition is characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) in which a person experiences extreme fatigue and possibly falls asleep at inappropriate times, such as while at work or at school. A narcoleptic will most probably experience disturbed nocturnal sleep and also abnormal daytime sleep pattern, which is often confused with insomnia. When a person with narcolepsy falls asleep or goes to bed they will generally experience the REM stage of sleep (rapid eye movement/dreaming state), within 10 minutes; whereas for most people, this shouldn't occur until generally 30 minutes of slumber.
If drinking was involved it doesn't take that long to turn out a test result. Plus you can't tell me that this guy is a complete Dr. Jekyl/Mr. Hyde and no one would fess up about it. I don't believe that.

Ok, I guess I'll be the first to talk shit, seeing that "this is the MIR board" and I posted something about someone dying once and everyone had a field day with it

...crashed his Chrysler PT Cruiser

...an active member and youth leader at his local church

my cousin was strictly against alcohol and other abusive substances
Need I say more?

I was gonna say something about the PT Cruiser, but I let it go.

I remember being on 12 hours shifts when I first got to SD. I can't count the number of times I almost ran into shit from falling asleep while driving around. We had at least 5 accidents involving our own people in a 6 month period.

I almost ran off the I-5 South heading to San Diego last time I drove back from Manteca.
