does death equal greatness in the rap game?

to be perfectly honest, alot of the dead "legends" were sub-par or average at best in my book........Eazy E & 2pac i can see callin legends, hell even Biggie even though was never a fan of his shit.......but how bout Big L? i seriously never heard of dude before his death, and wasnt really impressed wit what i heard afterwards.......Big Pun? i tossed his first album after listenin to it twice, garbage, but now that he'z dead, all of a sudden he's a "legend".......and im pretty sure now that ODB has passed, ima see post after post bout him being a legend too..........where does it end??

Eazy had a ghostwriter so I would never put him as a legend

And Big L is one of the greatest MCs of all time, he put out as many albums as Biggie did, and he was iller than BIG, so by the NY logic he should be the greatest of all time

I was already thinkin about this so glad you posted it...
For me, it wasn't him dying that made him a legend. Once he died I easily devoted the next days to just listening to his cds and watching treal tv. Listening to him and seeing what a great character and personality he had made me realize how great he is.

Seems like him dying just gave me a chance to really realize how great he was. Just cause he died doesn't make his music better...it's the same music it has always been...

I believe Big Pun was the 1st latino rapper to go platinum (Correct me if Im wrong) & he did have lyrics so for that he gets much respect.
Bottom line is you dont really know what youve got till its gone.
Like wit Dre, I had stopped listening to Dre after Thizzle Washington becuz I wasnt really feelin his shit at that time, didnt pick up any new Mac Dre til Ronald Dregan & Genie Of The Lamp and I was hooked again. That made me wanna go out & buy all his last albums becuz I understood what he was doing. Then he got killed. That shit fucked me up cuz I grew up on Mac Dre!

I agree with dude that posted the thread, I mean Big L is a legend? Yeah right! Your not a legend just cuz "a few" people know who you are. I think what makes a legend is what he or she accomplished or overcame tremendous odds or trailblazed. Eazy-E..not the best rapper but helped bring gangsta rap to the forefront AND owned one of the first Black independent gangsta rap labels back when rappers was barely gettin artist deals. Big Pun...one of the first Latino rappers to go platinum...ODB, no disrespect but he made no significant contribution to the game, more scandal than anything but I still liked him. Mac Dre even released 30something albums in like 10 years...Big L, all he did was rap with no real success even after death. Not saying this to shit on the man "God bless his soul" but legend is pushing it. Biggie...overrated in life and death, sold some records and made some money. Tupac..LEGEND, came from the gutter, touched millions of people in life and death and inspired a nation of niggaz.

i agree that death makes a lot of people view a rapper in a different light...

a lot of mac dre's lyrics have become more meaningful to me since he passed...just knowing that he died doing what he rapped about almost validates what he said all those years. he was a real motherfucker, and few people would argue with that...

as far as big L...he's a motherfucking animal on the mic....definately one of the best to touch the mic. anybody who can't at least see that as being a valid argument needs to take another listen....

Old Dirt Dog is a legend and always was. It was sad to see that he died because if you think no new Wu can drop after his old verses are used up.

^^ its not like every memeber of Wu is on every Wu tang track, theres only a handful of tracks where every main member has a verse

EW is my dude and he is a WEST COAST SUPPORTER TO THE FULLEST. Can't expect dude to know who the fuck Big L was and what he contributed to the community as a whole. It's been a minute since L died and most cats don't know about him. But I would suggest anybody who doesn't know to get on your favorite file sharing program and download his collection of works. L was THE FILTHIEST freestyler I have EVER heard IN MY LIFE. That's saying alot too because there are sooooo many great freestylers out there. L was sick as fuck no doubt... Peep his shit, crazy punches, wordplay, and metaphors.

On topic though... I think ODB was a unique artist, crazier than 3x, and the latter of the two killed him. We'll find out in a few weeks from the official report that he died of a heart failure because cocaine literally rips through the aorta (main valve leading into your heart) and causes small tears. Over time that shit adds up, especially if you don't allow your body to heal and continue to smoke. Same thing happened to Rick James. But as far as legend... Man I can't even call it. The WU at times had dope records, but I've never heard an album from them that I could listen to every track, every verse and say it's dope. The WU had sub par members who RUINED songs at times. ODB stood out of the crowd, as did Method and Ghostface... So I can't really call it. I do believe if he hadn't run into the law so many times and continued to put out albums we could easily call him a legend.

Big L is a legend. Who ever said he wasn't must be young. Big L was putting it down in 1995 in a major way. He earned his respect just like big E on the corners battling not on no mixtape like artist do today. It takes more than how many albums you drop to be a legend. If 50 passed today he would be a legend due to the fact the impact he made on the game. When I think of Rap legends i think of names like

NWA, MC HAMMER, ICE T, RAKIM, BIG DADDY KANE, RUN DMC, LL COOL J, ICE CUBE, TOO SHORT, E-40, MASTER P, BONE, DJ QUIK, MC EIHT, 2 PAC, EAZY E, SCARFACE, GETO BOYS, MANY MORE.
