Like it or not it's hard not to follow the story of Matt (or Matthew) Hardy and his (for the mostpart) incoherent Youtube messages. It's a slightly compelling story because it's being so well documented. Just about every day we're getting new footage from Matt. The short story to why we're seeing these videos seems to be because Matt is upset about not being used properly by the WWE.
There are a number of opinions as to what's really going on, but there seem to be a few reocurring theories regarding the Matt/Matthew Youtube nonsense happening lately.
One has to assume that a large reason for his not being used (and jobbing on Superstars) for so long, has to do with the fact that he had has some intestinal issues, which resulted in him having surgery and thus gaining weight. If I had to judge I'd say in a year or so the guy gained about 60 lbs. I'm not saying he is Vicera fat or anything, but he's my size and I admit to having a large beer gut. Luckily for me, I don't have to pretend to be in shape well enough to beat guys three times my size and in 100% better shape. We all know WWE's opinion on guys who aren't completely chiseled, so this is a relatively strong theory as to why Matt has been so underused within the past year or so.
It's come to light that as recently as a few weeks ago, Matt was being "sent home" (meaning told to pack up and leave the venue) from at least two Smackdown house shows, the most recent being overseas. We've seen "odd" Youtube videos from Matt before. Most of them seem to be "in character" as this Matthew character. In response to internet rumors that he was "sent home", he filmed a video in a motel room showing that he was still overseas. Somehow in his mind, this proved to the world that he wasn't "sent home", but in reality it just meant that he already had a plane ticket WWE didn't want to cancel and he had some free time to shoot a video that essentially proved nothing. I'm not Dr. Drew or anything, but I've had a few drinks in my life and if you asked me my opinion, Matt Hardy is filming himself while drunk, under the influence of some type of medication, marijuana, or some combination of the three. When he appears like this, he claims that he is "Matthew" an alternate persona that is the result of Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), which he claims he was diagnosed with recently.
Sure Matt.
I just think he's a lonely drunk and to keep himself busy and keep himself from drunk dialing Vince McMahon, he makes videos and hangs out on the internet as an outlet. It seems that the less he has on his plate in regard to wrestling, the more frequently he posts these videos.
Some people are saying this whole thing is a work, and especially with the angle that WWE pulled with Bryan Daniels' "firing" I can understand why people are thinking this. I haven't seen any evidence of this. At least not as far as WWE goes. If it's a work, I think it's because Matt is setting up a character and an angle he can play whenever he gets to TNA. Anderson kept himself relevant and might have won himself a few fans using Youtube when he was sitting out his 90 day no-compete clause transitioning from WWE to TNA. This would be pretty much the same thing only Matt is just getting a head start on it.
So let's assume that he's just trying to get fired, or planning on it at least, what is this guy going to gain? As of right now he's being paid to do nothing. Isn't that the American dream? If internet reports are correct, he's showing up to events he's scheduled to work while under the influence (that's only what I can gather from reports that he's being sent home because of "health concerns") and being sent home while still collecting a paycheck. Are these reports and subsequent videos from an intoxicated "Matthew" supposed to convince Dixie Carter that she needs to hire ANOTHER overweight drug addled WWE midcarder? I understand the immediate positive reaction a fan would have to watch the Hardy Boyz come back together for another run. Hell, they're one of the best tag teams to have been around in the past decade. They put in classic matches with Edge and Christian, and the Dudley Boys every week for years. But we're talking ten years ago, and many many pounds ago. Plus I don't know if anyone's seen Jeff recently but he's not exactly in the best of shape either... besides the fact that there's still the chance of him doing some time in jail for his drug charges. Besides all that, Jeff is in the running for the TNA title every week now. Does he really want to give up his main event spot to tag right now? Would anyone believe that the Hardys are going to beat The Motor City Machine Guns or Generation Me at their age? The Dudleys pulled it off for years but from day one they were out of shape brawlers.
I'm going to keep following this story because I find it compelling. At the end of the day if it's just a work it's not going to be that interesting to me. Some people looking for a new angle might find this kind of interesting, but making fake youtube videos when you should be putting in work doesn't interest me much. Matt is in a spot where he is living the dream of so many kids (himself included) and he's acting like an intoxicated fool instead of asking what he can do to help. There are people out there who would assemble the ring for free on a weekly basis just to have the opportunity to step into it. If it's not a work... Well we could be looking at the next tragic story coming from the wrestling world.
